Nicky Winmar Autobiography
Absolutely can’t wait. I reckon this will be a fascinating read from my all time fav (maybe minus Loewe)
"This long-awaited autobiography tells the story of Winmar's brilliant career in colourful detail, as well as giving moving insight into his life. Amidst the pain, the turbulence and the triumph, his heart and abiding sense of humour shine through."

Why go for discount- as much royalties to the author as possible, more $ might even filter through to Nicky - depending on their contract????Sainternist wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 4:23pm You can pre-order it here with a significant discount:

Re: Nicky Winmar Autobiography
I dunno about this... autobiographies can be pretty self serving and/or dry at times..
Matthew Hardy is involved and he's great so hopefully it's properly fleshed out..

Re: Nicky Winmar Autobiography
100% agree. I’ve always found the difference between a great autobiography and a mediocre one is the level of honesty the author is prepared to put across.
In so many instances people are afraid to tell stories or give accounts/details of events that they are afraid will make them look bad.
Hence they are always the wise ones, or the person with the zinger, who won the argument, was on the side of the righteous etc
Reality is that you tend to get smarter and more tactful as you get older and a lot of it is the result of experience/learning from mistakes.
I like a story where the person isn’t afraid to say I did/said this and it was selfish/stupid and I regret it.
It’ll be interesting to see how deep, if at all, Nicky gets into the weeds of what he went through

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, I’m not sure that discount would get in the way of Nicky’s return.loris wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 6:00pmWhy go for discount- as much royalties to the author as possible, more $ might even filter through to Nicky - depending on their contract????Sainternist wrote: ↑Wed 20 Sep 2023 4:23pm You can pre-order it here with a significant discount:

The only way Nicky would earn more coin was if the Book was a best seller and had several reprints .

Re: Nicky Winmar Autobiography
Met the great man down at Moorabbin today. Was doing a booking signing at the game.
Got to say that I was thrilled.
He was really lovely and chatty. Had a lot of time for the fans and listened intently (even if only pretending to) to my story about his influence on my fandom.
Photo is going up on the wall and his book seems pretty intense at a glance

Re: Nicky Winmar Autobiography
Nick is genuinely a ripper bloke, he will have a chat to anyone, even the likes, of say, a Vortex type.
And as said earlier, some autos are hit and miss, for eg after reading the Eric clapton auto I disliked the bloke, so couldn't help thinking it was an honest one.
I'm sure this is impossible to occur with Nick's book.

If you enjoyed Clapton's biography, also worth a read is Hellraiser (Baker) & Composing Himself (Bruce) biographies. The Fireman wrote: ↑Sun 29 Oct 2023 9:51am Nick is genuinely a ripper bloke, he will have a chat to anyone, even the likes, of say, a Vortex type.

Re: Nicky Winmar Autobiography
G’Day Sainters,
I worked with Nicky Winmar on his memoir, and I’d like to assure anyone who’s interested that the book is released this week (on sale at all good bookstores and major chains like Big W, Target etc), right now.
I’d also like to say it’s a hard-hitting account of his life and footballing career. Nicky is his own worst critic throughout.
Check out by reviews so far:
Here’s some examples of the feedback we’ve received so far…
“Raw, authentic, honest and utterly unputdownable!"
PAUL KELLY - author of How To Make Gravy
“Reading Nicky's story, my admiration has only grown. Once we watched him in wonder. And now it's time to listen and learn”
TIM WINTON
'Moving, painful, often funny: Nicky Winmar's book holds nothing back. Matthew Hardy has got right under the most famous skin in football.'
GIDEON HAIGH
"A compelling account from the fleet footed-footballer who ran like the wind down the wing and stood strong against the rip tide of racism a generation before Adam Goodes. Winmar’s is at once a heroic and a sad tale that all football fans, nay all Australians, must read if they are to understand their game and their country. A great read.”

Re: Nicky Winmar Autobiography
Wow… sorry for the re-bump.
Am just reading this now. The discussion on racism is fascinating and horrific at the same time.
Chapter 15 is where he talks about the infamous Collingwood game at Vic park. I knew it was bad but OMG - he says pregame, he and McAdam went out to the ground to have a look and the crowd shouted that they should be hung from a tree, along with the usual black c slur…
This led to them making a pact to be the 2 best on ground.
This was followed by threats that they would be murdered, his kids killed, mother sexually assaulted, a mob waited for them in the parking lot, and fans hand delivered threatening letters direct to their house that night (they didn’t return home).
What an absolute bunch of scum bags. This has really upset me this evening

Re: Nicky Winmar Autobiography
I've only just started it -- a Xmas present.
It really is an excellent read.
Nicky Winmar was my all-time favourite Saint -- truly a genius footballer.
Matt Hardy is a genius collaborator, getting Nicky's story down on paper.
Brilliant, clear storytelling, from the best.

Re: Nicky Winmar Autobiography
I enjoyed reading Cuz’s book, it was a great read and gave a lot of insight into his life before and after playing AFL football. I agree with you about the Collingwood FC, they were disgraceful then but hopefully have started to improve. For Nicky to forgive them it shows the quality of man that he is. What Collingwood President Alan McAlister did post that infamous match was disgusting. The filth supporters targeting Nicky’s House shows their moronic brain dead mind set.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

He said publicly
"As long as they conduct themselves like white people, well, off the field, everyone will admire and respect … as long as they conduct themselves like human beings, they will be alright,”

Calm down …
stop pretending anyone really believes Collingwood supporters wanted to hang Nicky under a tree?
If you are serious about racism…just stop it.

Pat yourselves on the back for your disgust
