We had at least 4 wrong match ups from the start

Re: Marcus Windhager
Showed last year that if you allow him to tag good players , they not only take him to the ball but also he nullifies their impact.
Given RL used Clint Jones so effectively as a tagger, I’m surprised he didn’t deploy Windhager in a tagging role all year.

The rumour mill has been all year that they’re trying to develop the rest of his game to make him a more well rounded mid.

Stick him in the guts all next year and we’ve found one out missing pieces of the midfield puzzle which Lyon is trying to solve . God old fashioned tagger and does it well. Nullifies the oppo and does damage himself .

Re: Marcus Windhager
Good call. He seems to thrive on having the responsibility of beating a direct opponent. It’s probably the way to get the offensive part of his game humming.

I saw an episode of "That's Good for footy" with Crouch and Butts as the Saints guests. Butler was saying wind'harger' rather than hager
Maybe Marcus told them that's how his surname should be pronounced.

Re: Marcus Windhager
He looks a natural as a defensive mid and not only negates but wins possession himself.
Looks far less an effective player in the back half or wing.
For some reason Ross doesn’t seem to want to play him as a defensive mid, not sure why.
To me he’d get the role every week on the oppositions best mid.

Re: Marcus Windhager
I'm really surprised that we haven't used him as an onballer this season. Unsurprising that he does well wherever he's needed, half back, tagging... but to me he's always been the midfielder type we've been screaming out for over a decade.
Gehrig emerged from scans yesterday saying he was "as sweet as a bun"

Re: Marcus Windhager
There has been some baffling talk around Marcus this year.
Killed Neale last year one on one.
This year broken hand in a practice match
Played back in through the VFL
Performed but couldnt get a game
Told he was working on his offensive midfield side (patterns etc)
Played in the seniors but shifted to half back - did OK but clearly not his natural position.
Put onto Kelly in the second half of the last game of the year and showed what he is made of.
Let's hope 2024 is a bit different.

Re: Marcus Windhager
Kelly was stuffed in the second half after doing all of his damage in the first half. Generally a good idea to swing ypung players onto the best when they are tiringOtiman wrote: ↑Tue 12 Sep 2023 5:51pm There has been some baffling talk around Marcus this year.

Hopefully Windy can avoid being pidgeon holed as a negative player and develop some creative attacking flare to join the midfield full time.

Re: Marcus Windhager
I think Windy does his best work on the back of being a run with player. Not necessarily negative but let his opponent run him to the ball, and beat him head to head.
