Sicily today
So he ends up with 43 disposals including about 16 in the last. Basically won the game off his own boot.
Ross said in the press conference that Sharman did a good job on him in the third but lost in the last.
My question is did we have a plan for him? If it was moving the sub onto him then that doesn't seem like a good one. Feels like we took the Hawks extremely lightly, allowing their best player to do as he pleases.
Should Cordy have played on him? Do we have anyone in our squad that could stop his impact?
We play them again this season and will need to be a lot more wary of his impact.

Re: Sicily today
Similar to the plans we had against Daicos
If you do a little research, there is a pattern of spare defenders dominating against us

Re: Sicily today
No , we’re exploring letting other teams’ best players run rampant!
Can’t believe that all our wins were due to Lyon and mates but no responsibility for anything going wrong.
EG who is responsible for Steele’s weight loss and form slump?

Re: Sicily today
Daicos and Sicily are a bit different though. What hurt with Sicily is how many intercept possessions he had.

Re: Sicily today
They are both defenders their team tries to get free to exit the ball from d50
Both had 40+
Both will get 10 coaches votes

Re: Sicily today
Anyway regardless it was an error to let both players dominate the way they did and something we need to improve on. I guess Owens would have been a good option for Sicily today but we knew he was out and we appeared to have no plan for him.
We will need one next time.

Re: Sicily today
The commentators on the radio called it in the first 5 minutes of the game.
Very frustrating.

So it’s Lyons’s fault Steele can play well last week but not this week and can’t find consistent form?whiskers3614 wrote: ↑Sat 27 May 2023 9:34pm No , we’re exploring letting other teams’ best players run rampant!

Re: Sicily today
I thought it all came down to the coach?
Isn’t the coach responsible for results
Yesterday’s result was as poor as we’ve had for years

Re: Sicily today
It's a combination of coaching and players. The coaches need to take responsibility for Sicily going bonkers. He is a gun player so it's not their fault that he had a good game but to allow him to have ten more possessions than his previous best is unacceptable.
The players need to take responsibility for their poor performance especially in the midfield. Steele 14 possessions not good enough, Ross 16 not good enough. That's on the players.

Re: Sicily today
Sharman’s defensive efforts simply aren’t up to snuff. Sicily was running circles around us. Sadly, I don’t think Cooper has a future at AFL level.

... or it could be a flaw of the game plan itself?lewdogs wrote: ↑Sun 28 May 2023 1:12pmIt's a combination of coaching and players. The coaches need to take responsibility for Sicily going bonkers. Defences... especially half back lines, seem to be having too many "field days" against us, especially in important games (under RL), for it to be shrugged off as a coincidence?
Maybe the game plan has this drawback?

It’s because forwards fold back into a team defence
Leads to opposing defenders free in their back half

Re: Sicily today
Correct - the team defence zone prays on a poor kick and turnover - which is where Ross wants scores from
Stats show teams who finish higher on the ladder score mainly from turnover and teams who rely on stoppages scoring finish lower
Our zone has been very effective early in the year, with teams not able to pick it apart - since then teams have adjusted how they play against us
They do not go sideways or backward in the back half as much or bomb from defence, they go forward through the zone or run and gun at the zone.
Our press and pressure needs to be elite against good teams because as soon as it’s not - we leak

Re: Sicily today
We played one extra in our defence right from the word go
Guess who Hawthorn had in their defence as their plus one?
There are certain players who will cut you up and Sicily is some one who can do that
I get that we have our game plan and we stick to that, but when you unleash a good player and he gets on a roll it’s very difficult to swing the momentum back your way and control some one who initiates their attacking chains from their backline
That’s a coaching issue
It wasn’t the only reason we lost. They main area in my opinion is that we got smashed in the midfield. Ross and his match committee had an opportunity to try Campbell this week when Owens wasn’t there to support Marshall. Ross and match committee have backed in the same mids over the last 5 or 6 weeks and these guys have also let us down
