What's with all the punching down in the media?
Following the grand final win by the Cats I was surprised to see St Kilda being mentioned on several posts on social media about how terrible we are. Two from 7AFL about Selwood and how he has levelled our finals wins (not mentioned: he has more wins than the Bulldogs). Even random posts of St Kilda supporters watching some unrelated game looking bored by some leech gambling site (sportsbet)
Am I missing something or were we meant to play instead of Sydney yesterday? Suddenly we are the talk of the town! Very strange and random I thought considering normally after a grand final you talk about the teams that played.

If this forum is a sample size of all members, then clearly we don’t care about winning and it isn’t the number 1 priority. Then filters through and this is what we have, a sub-par professional sports club.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Sun 25 Sep 2022 7:08pm This is what I keep banging on about - WE ARE NOT RELEVANT EXCEPT AS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT NOT TO BE

Doesn’t seem to matter who comes in & who goes out.
You can’t tell be that board after board, admin after admin, coach after coach and player after player can keep getting it wrong…..
Genuinely needs someone that will ruffle feathers, not care if people get upset, and just get s*** done.
Not an overall fan of Grant Thomas but at least he stuck to what he believed in, in the end he just got hooked on too much power and had to go.

St Kilda just doesn't seem very focused on winning premierships and track a mediocre path accordingly.
Evidence of that is that our fans haven't elected a board member in over a decade now. They've all been appointed.
Either everyone is resigned to our fate of mediocrity or we're just not that keen on success; which would explain the past decade where our coaches have been Scott Watters, Alan Richardson and Brett Ratten - and nobody seems that fussed about it.
Other clubs would have ripped the throat out of that dreary lot; we hand out extensions to coaches when they're coaching abysmally.
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

So do the Saints have the most players who have gone on to win flags at other teams? I think the count is now 22.

Re: What's with all the punching down in the media?
As a fan base - we seem uncompetitive..
We are so used to losing, we focus on cult players, good blokes etc., and invent narratives around them.
Look at Jack Hayes.
He has played one good game.
One
Uno
And on the back of that we are in raptures...he gets a contract, NOt only does nobody even blink, we are back slapping...
Same for coaching..Ratts is a good bloke!
That's on the fan side...
But in the club iteslf, on and off field, I do not have the foggiest.
Our meek capitulation against Essendon this year. Just watch the first minute, and see Josh Battle hopelessly stuck out of position like that..see how lame the whole team is in that first quarter!
Your anger grows !
You think you have the right to know.
And yet look at what Sydney served up yesterday?
48 hours ago, Sydney were everyone's darlings.
Culture

Professionalism
Effort
bla bla bla...
They were hopeless...and that was a Granny!
Mysetrious!

Sydney were there 1 year too early and it showed against seasoned pros
They were overwhelmed- not necessarily due to talent
But experience and maturity

Re: What's with all the punching down in the media?
This is boorish but once again
NO ONE has suggested to win football games that you don’t need decent players.
What they are suggesting is that you also need top line coaching
We have good players - we lack the ability to bring the best out of them
Our game plan is headless chooks stuff
Chris Scott knew Cars game plan needed an overhaul
Knew he had to move with the times and play faster, attacking footy ….they now do. Game plan and cia hung matters ffs
He has an entire team that’s brought into it
Ours has a coach who, if rumours are right, plays favourites abs has been told that by his own players in exit meetings
Our coach is so stuck in his “my way is right” he can’t adapt even when other sides constantly over run and score heavily against us
Our list is not top 4 - it need improvement
Our coaching is bottom 4 and second half season proved it
“Yeah….nah””

Re: What's with all the punching down in the media?
We have good player - yes
Great players win premierships
Geelong went out and got great players
They have 10-12 champions
If you want to strengthen your argument- probably don’t come are lists!
BTW
How do you rate Scott as a coach?

The fact that we’re praising Finnis for a “stellar” job done over the last decade shows that mediocrity is accepted as a satisfactory standard.evertonfc wrote: ↑Sun 25 Sep 2022 8:39pmCouldn't agree more.Annoyedsaint wrote: ↑Sun 25 Sep 2022 7:14pmIf this forum is a sample size of all members, then clearly we don’t care about winning and it isn’t the number 1 priority. Good coaches to recruit and develop
Good players and a successful

Then the rest are supporting cast but need to be able to do their job well too.
I know the saying is the sum of all parts but sum parts need to be the main part like when it comes to a sports team it should be talented players above all else.
Good game plans are the extreme very last part needed any idiot with an internet connection can cobble a good game plan together.

Also, there's many different ways to win premierships. I've distilled it into three over the past decade:
You can have the best players (Melbourne 2021)
Or the best game plan (Richmond 2017, 2019, 2020; Hawthorn 2013-2015)
Or the best culture (Geelong 2022, Sydney 2012)
A less reliable way is luck (weaker opposition - West Coast 2018) or momentum (WB 2016), and they're probably the only two this millennium I can think of for this bracket.
It really used to only be having the best players (in fact, that was the case for almost 100 years). But Hawthorn started to poke through that with Clarkson, then Hardwick drove a truck through it.
My belief is that it's incredibly hard to have the best players in any given year; it's much more probable you can develop the best culture or the best game plan.
At St Kilda, we definitely don't have the best players. And with our current coach, we certainly don't have the best game plan. And with our wider football department, we definitely don't have the best culture.
So we're reduced to relying on luck/and or momentum, neither of which I expect to fall our way at any point during the next cycle of modern football.

Re: What's with all the punching down in the media?
Good grief, this forum has really become awfully boring, almost every topic degenerates into endless and pointless, often bitter, debates about the coach, the playing list, the game plan, the COO, CEO, President and Board. Constantly going around in never ending circles, ad nauseam spouting nonsense and tripe all to no avail as there's not a snowflake's hope in hell of anyone at our club reading any of this dribble, let alone taking notice or even caring what fans on social media think about the state of affairs . Get real, think about it: if you were on the staff at Moorabbin in any capacity from the bootstudder to the Prez, would you???
Overall I've really enjoyed the past season, such high quality footy, as good if not better than most seasons - the game is in excellent shape.
Now that the season is finally over I'm going to sit back and take a break from footy and switch back on when, in the famous words of A B "Banjo" Patterson "there's movement at the station". I'll also turn off the rear-view mirror and focus on the road ahead and gear up refreshed and raring to go, 161 days from today, full of excitement, promise and hope! Not sure about expectations, a bit soon but you never know.....

I’d love to know any of these ‘magical game plans’
That make teams better than they are?!
I think you’ll find - they are all similar and copies off each other

Do you think Collingwood went with the same game plan as last season under Buckley or changed their style this year?
What about Geelong, did they make some significant tweaks to the way they moved the ball in 2022?
