Re: 2009 GF
Should never has lost that game we were the better side on the day but just couldn't convert on the score board + Raphs lack of awareness gifted them a couple of goals & the Tom Hawkins goal that was clearly a point . That was ours for the taking as was the 2010 just needed a bit of luck but hey lucky toe poke from Ablett unlucky bounce for Milne & the rest is history nowbarwon saint wrote: ↑Mon 04 Jul 2022 7:03pm Just looking through my book of footy cards and cant believe we lost that game.

Yep video review now would have showed a point and right in front of me Clarke getting run down and they scored a goal from that.

Rain and three horrendous umpiring calls. Geelong got everything that day.

Re: 2009 GF
Last Friday, we saw the result of "taking your chances". After quarter time, we kicked 11-3 to 8-14. Hence the win.
In 2009, we did not take our chances. We actually lost by a goal, with the St Kilda players walking off the ground and off the mark (Jason Blake), which allowed Rooke to kick the ball along the ground for a goal after the siren.
We had beaten Geelong in round 14 by a goal, so there is no evidence that we were vastly superior. Our advantage was our marking talls, and with the rain, that was neutralised. There is no doubt that their backline was better than ours. Hence their premiership. Show me a team with the best backline in the league and and I'll show you a premiership team.

I used to collect everything but it got too damn expensive so only doing Saints and I kept all my Cats also (wives team).
Even saying that Select Australia are too greedy with the duplications they bring out.
Can I ask, why only back to 1972?

Who’d have guessed Curly blames the umpires for our loss in 09?

Proven correct after the fact which is to late. Amazing three clear errors two resulted in Geelong goals the other denied us a shot on goal.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Tue 05 Jul 2022 7:19amWho’d have guessed Curly blames the umpires for our loss in 09?

Re: 2009 GF
We lost because too many Saints got beaten in individual contests- especially in the forward half, and that's one thing that stood out for me on the day

Re: 2009 GF
Didn't help that our f***wit coach" forgot" to put Ball back on the ground for the whole of the last quarter and that there was blatant maggot bias against Schneider who was mugged out on the ground.

Re: 2009 GF
Bad coaching and bad umpiring not withstanding, we ultimately lost because we missed too many simple goals.
The above factors (especially the coaching IMO) influenced the result but we should have been 5-6 goals up at 3/4 but failed to capitalise of our dominance.
It’s funny… I’ve always been very critical of the Dempster selection in that role and that time…
Yet I can’t help but wonder what moving Dempster on to Paul Chapman might have yielded.
Give it 3 years and that’s his bread and butter

Re: 2009 GF
Trying to win a premiership with both Raph Clarke and Zac Dawson in the team would have been too hard a task for anyone!

The scary thing is I think you believe your own bullsh!t.
Free kicks for 23 against 19.
But the umpires cost us and Geelong got everything
Half time scores:
Saints:7.7.49
Cats:7.1.43
We missed absolute sitters in the first half when we were dominating.
Schneider from the top of the square, Milne, Montagna etc.

I mentioned blatant calls that they admitted were wrong. Two goals to Geelong as a result and Sneider was with in kicking distance when he was denied.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Tue 05 Jul 2022 12:18pmThe apologist excuse maker at it again.CURLY wrote: ↑Tue 05 Jul 2022 9:25amProven correct after the fact which is to late. We’d have won if we’d played Sharman.

Re: 2009 GF
Bad kicking is bad football. Was in 1900, was in 2009 and still is today.
7.7. to 7.1 at half time.
Schneider, Milne, McQualter all missed gimme's to this point. so make it 10.4 to 7.1
In those conditions a 3 1/2 goal lead would have been more than enough.
Everyone talks about individual moments - Raph' holding the Ball ( fisher's fault should have sheppard rather than run on ), the toe poke, Hawkins poster then Ablett's goal from the middle. All irrelevant if we kick goals form 20 out of closer!
The ultimate one which got away.

Re: 2009 GF
Nailed it. Casual observers talk about the 2010 drawn Grand Final and that bounce, but is 2009 that was the real missed opportunity.older saint wrote: ↑Thu 07 Jul 2022 2:15pm Bad kicking is bad football. Was in 1900, was in 2009 and still is today.

The best side in the H&A by a big margin and to lead 9.11 to 9.4 at 3/4 time with the easy missed shots was the problem. If those seven scoring shots were a conservative 3.4 instead of 0.7, it's a different story at the end of the game.
Geelong did it the year before against Hawthorn where they had 34 scoring shots to 25. Missed opportunities.
They turned it around the following year, as did we but it wasn't quite enough for us.

Thompson put Bartel on Lenny.
It was a courageous move and it won them the game.
