Trade - Draft Discussion

Post: # 1952963Post Ghost Like »

I think most enjoyed last year's thread about possible trades / drafting strategies. Impatient Sainter posted some very good stuff & Ace was all over the draft in terms of points and picks.

Hopefully this can be "stickied"?

Can I begin with the opportunity of picking up a Free Agent in Amon & the possibility of a Restricted Free Agent in De Goey?

Amon's vision, pace and footskills on show last night would be very handy in our best 22.

Can we afford a player like De Goey? Whilst still holding on to our current crop, ensuring they get paid their worth? De Goey is another who I think is easily best 22 both as a forward & mid.

Then we also have Xerri. Is he still keen to join St Kilda? If Paddy retires, Xerri is ready made & improving with opportunity as seen in the first few rounds this year.

We need to make finals, preferably Top Six, to make the decision of out of contract, FAs & RFAs a bit easier if we come knocking.

If we are compiling a wish list can I put in for a large CHF and a larger CHB.

I think a lot of players will be wanting to leave North and Suns as soon as they can.

You would not keep one from our list?

I'm feinding for a granny ....can't take it anymore...please God send the apocalypse or a Saints Big Boy Trophy!!!!

Whether we go to the trade or draft I think we will be looking at more midfielders, another key forward and another ruckman.

How nice would it be if we could trade out our first round pick for a player like Taranto then select our NGA players in Shezeel & McKenzie. Both sound like they are possible 1st round options so it would be a steal. Its not going to happen so depending on where we finish the year I would be inclined to go to the draft and pick the best available midfielder or key forward at our pick.

I believe we will target Karl Amon to return to Melbourne as a free agent. Depending on whether Paddy goes around again, look at trading for Xerri or another similiar ruckman. I think Heath will need another good season of VFL before he is truly prepped for the step up. Although I believe his class mates in NWM, Windhager & Owens will be regular starting 22 players next year.

Lets say Ryder, Hannebrey & Geary retire, Kent delisted. If we get another ruckman via a trade, Campbell will be an unlucky casualty and I would be hesitantly put a line through Allison if we needed another list spot.

Connolly and Bytel might be under the pump to keep their list spots as well. I think there will be a shock or 2 when the list changes happen at season's end.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I agree Wayne, but I guess it comes down to how many list changes Gallagher makes at seasons end? Bytel & Connolly both have futures but other clubs might come calling...?

I think we still have one or two list spots open? even after adding Hayes late last year? Kyle & Peris are Cat B rookies I believe they are outside the total list numbers.

So if Geary, Ryder, Hannebery retire and Kent delisted thats 4 positions. I believe ATM we have 38 senior listed and 4 Cat A rookie listed players. Then we pick up Amon as a RFA and a ruckman eg Xerri. I believe with those movements we can still add 4-6 more players at the drafts without further trades out?

Darcy Gardiner would also improve a problem area.

Xerri rated the most improved player in the competition. I still think the club should have donkey's up the trade asking price last year (2nd round 2022 pick)

Not sure that I would keep Joyce.

Many on here won’t agree but the free agent that could seriously elevate us is De Goey.
He would immediately improve our centre bounce impact, as well as our forward potency.
A fresh start would assist him in becoming the player he can be.

I have a sneaking suspicion we are heavily into Noah Anderson GCS to get him home? Just imagine our midfield of Heath, Anderson, Windhager, Owens for the next 10-12 years...

Oh, OK but who then are they going to play at fullback if the vice captain gets injured.

Agree Saynta if Howard ever gets injured we have to keep a player like Joyce as a backup. Unfortunately if Joyce keeps improving other clubs may come sniffing offering him more AFL playing time. Similiar to Frost at Hawthorn he went to 3 clubs before nailing a full time gig.

Battle or Highmore might be able to manage full back, but not to Howard's level. Adams will get there but he is going to need time to build his body and game.

I see Nik Cox from Essendon has not signed. I think this kid could be very special in any part of the ground. Would it be worth offering him a contract worth thinking about? Even if it only put pressure on Essendon who appear in some salary cap pain.

I would like to avoid the pulling-teeth-like experience of dealing with Dodoro. Cox could be anything, so they will see that as 2 FRDP for him, and that would be the starting price.
Love to have him, but don’t think it will happen.

I totally agree saynta & diddley but if we can screw them to the wall they either pay or he walks to us. This would not be a negotiation.

Can only match bids for NGA'a after pick 40

Well if Tristan Xerri wanted a trade to the Saints at seasons end, he didnt do himself any favours today. With a total of 2 disposals, 2 marks and 4 tackles he was completely ineffective around the ground.

Then you have Tom Campbell with 51 hitouts and 23 disposals dominating the VFL, perhaps we were fortunate we didnt go ahead with Xerri trade?
