Goal Kicking
Disgraceful
He kicked 1-7 last week
Missed 2 sodas tonight!!!
Has kicked 19.19 this year - career Career 79.69
For a guy who’s job it is to kick goals - a full time footballer who trains daily
That is fkn unacceptable
And to miss goals from the top of the goal square is absolutely pathetic
A 12yo kid would’ve kicked that goal he missed tonight
Also - clip to the coaches for not improving this!

Re: Max King
Bit rough - he has played some blinders against some very good opponents - the nagging doubt is there [yips] and no amount of coaching can fix that.

Re: Max King
Outside of his goal kicking
His lack of work rate off the ball and his defensive acts are concerning
Never saw Nick Riewoldt jog around on a footy field
He needs to work harder to get separation off the ball and work harder when the opposition has it

Re: Max King
Absolute liability when kicking like this.
We lost the game tonight due to poor conversion.
No escaping it.

Re: Max King
His games are good except for goalkicking and whilst he might kick four or five goals some weeks , he will never kick big bags of seven + while he continues to twirl the effin ball in his hands whilst he is walking in to kick at goal .
I know the coaches probably want him to be relaxed and not overthink it but surely there is someone at the club who could show him footage of all greats over the years and ask him what they have in common .
The Answer .......They hold the ball steady when they have a set shot
It ain't rocket science
The less moving parts the less things can go wrong .

Re: Max King
He’s missed 2 tonight but it was the nature of the misses (very gettable) and the second one could’ve snuffed port out
To be fair Gresham missed 3
Higgins 3?
So he’s not alone
But where was Membreys goals or Butlers? 8 disposals eff all metres gained….not enough impact tonight

Max King's insane twirling of the footy has to stop right now. Even players who twirl the ball stop twirling before the ball drop. With a couple of King's set shots, he was still twirling the ball when he dropped it and so the ball was askew when it hit his foot. Unacceptable. Surely he can be instructed to cut it out.
I pulled some YT clips of the best of the best. Not one of them twirls the ball. They hold it straight and drop it onto the foot dead straight. If Max wants to be among the best of the best, he could do worse than watch and learn from these players.
Doug Wade Wade's set shot is at about 1:49. Before that there are incredible speccys and snaps

Talking to an NFL kicking coach, he said you have to get the basics right then tailor the rest to what works for you.SteveStevens66 wrote: ↑Sun 01 May 2022 5:50am100% correctmr six o'clock wrote: ↑Sun 01 May 2022 12:19am His games are good except for goalkicking and whilst he might kick four or five goals some weeks , he will never kick big bags of seven + while he continues to twirl the effin ball in his hands whilst he is walking in to kick at goal .

Pretty sure this works for AFL as well.
Only my opinion, but I think the basics would be:
- Hold it straight
- Walk in a straight line where you want to kick it
- Drop it straight
- Kick through the ball
You links to the great goal kickers is fantastic.
McKenna & Lockett were the best kicks I have seen and both kept it uncomplicated and made it look routine.
Max looks like he leans back and pokes the short kicks but is well balanced and kicks through it when he's 40+ out.
His ball drop does not look consistent.
He also looks like an injury waiting to happen.
He is so often in big contests.
I don't understand why he can't get on the lead more often, he has the speed and athleticism.

Does he lead first and after a couple of games of the ball being kicked over his head we revert to him contesting
Or
Do we kick it to space and see it taken away like AA did last night - and then revert to kicking to a contest
Meh - just put the bl00dy thing through the big sticks - he gets it enough - my biggest concern is the ball twirling and drop. If he had kicked at league standard the last two weeks he would have a return of 7.5 rather than 3.9

Re: Max King
No doubt the short range kicking of King and Higgins is currently the difference between winning and losing a close match or turning what should have been a very comfortable win against GWS into a match that was in the balance with 7 or 8 minutes to play.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Sun 01 May 2022 9:30amChicken - Egg timeD.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Sun 01 May 2022 9:24am

It must be demoralizing for the mids and backs to bust their gut then get let down when professional forwards cannot convert from 15 - 30 meters out at barely any angle.

A knock on Max King as a junior was his goal kicking- poor conversion

Re: Max King
Ben might just be better at Rock/Paper/Scissors
Back yard footy
R/P/S who kicks AT goal - who defends
Maybe Ben got more shots at goal as a 9 year old!!

Re: Max King
Hayes would have been handy last night as would have been Marshall. A strong body and older head up forward to take some pressure off King.
He must feel the weight of expectation every time he lines up for a soda. You can almost see it as he prepares. It’s a lot of pressure for a young guy.
I don’t expect him to kick and convert like Plugger. No one does. But he can work on pressure-proofing his kicking.
That starts with technique. Head over the ball. Simple ball drop (no waving it around). Kick through the ball.
But aim is the most critical thing of all.
He should be trying to land it on the head of a guy he’s picked out in the crowd. Not short of him or over him, but directly on top of his scone. In the words of legendary golf instructor Harvey Penick, Take Dead Aim.
