Don't want to be negative after that, but...
Webster has lost his mojo, and his time is up.
B Paton is a gun
Sinclair should be part of the midfield rotations
And we MUST play Leo Connolly

Webster was good today, so was Benny. In fact the whole team mucked in.

Re: Don't want to be negative after that, but...
Paton was poor in the first half, couldn’t get near it
Moved back after HT and locked down on Bolton and did well!
Go figure
Webster was good, as per usual

You don’t have to have lots of stats to be an integral part of the teams success

Re: Don't want to be negative after that, but...
Gee the "play the kids, get some games into them" brigade posts some weird stuff both on SS and Big Footy.
Webster is an experienced, capable player who - unlike some of his teammates - generally can kick accurately under pressure. He's not a star, but he's clearly in our best 22 at the moment. If Coffield and Clark were both fit and in form, he might come under a bit of pressure. But not from Connolly at this stage.

Webster does lots of stuff that goes unnoticed
Some of his defensive spoils and backing into packs is enough to disrupt the oppo.
May not be racking them up on the stats sheet but he is certainly contributing

Re: Don't want to be negative after that, but...
I've written extensively in various threads that we broke their back by holding them scoreless for the last part of that 3rd quarter.
The Tigers kept getting it inside 50 and our defenders (including Jimmy Webster) kept denying them opportunities to score. They killed us with inside 50 differential in the 3rd.
Our boys scragged and tackled and double teamed their talls with countless spoils in that quarter. Our mids and our wingers were brilliant with the support they provided to our backline

Stats, I don't bother with, especially when it comes to defenders.
I think i have two main points:
We can't play Paton and Webster in the same team
(and with Sinclair moved to the midfield, Connolly's precision kicking is a great replacement).
Webster had a number of acts where, years past, he'd have marked, spoiled, cleared, etc... whereas in this game he was beaten.

Re: Don't want to be negative after that, but...
Yeah interesting, after watching the replay I didn't find myself throwing bricks at the TV. In fact there were a couple of plays that impressed me. Personally I think we need a senior player of Jimmy's calibre in the side to try and get more of this "on-field leadership" we so desperately need and so I can see Paton and Jim playing in the same side. They are both beautiful kicks of the ball and you can't have enough of that coming out of defence.groupie1 wrote: ↑Wed 06 Apr 2022 4:44amStats, I don't bother with, especially when it comes to defenders.

Paton and Webster are both locks in our side…strong case for Connolly if Sinclair plays midfield role & Hill is taken out of defence,

Re: Don't want to be negative after that, but...
I’m partial to playing Connolly too
I’m a realist this sude is a few years off a flag - sits mid table right now and we’ll get handed some lessons this year
To me it’s about : what do you add to a side that takes you clearly forwards??
And: Skill
Connolly has 20 setting up off HB might just translate into far better entries into forward 50 and goals
He’s smart, aggressive by foot and perfect replacement for Sincs …but so is Hunter Clarke
I’d like to squeeze Connolly in
Keep Clarke/Sincs in the guts rotation
But who to leave out?
Point is though we should be building now for flag years while Steele, King, Marshall are in prime not “let’s scrape into 8 in 2022” where we know we aren’t the real deal
“Yeah….nah””

Connolly needs to work on defence and contested work
Takes more than being a good kick, to being an AFL footballer
Otherwise Brodie Murdoch and Brandon White would’ve made it

I am yet - after his 10-year career - to be convinced that Webster is a good user by foot. i reckon he darts it and 50% of the time it lucks into someone's arms, the rest are shanks. Something about his action. I dunno.Vortex wrote: ↑Wed 06 Apr 2022 8:26amYeah interesting, after watching the replay I didn't find myself throwing bricks at the TV. But fair enough, I've always been a Webster fan for his defensive work, I just see the need to get Connolly in, and Paton is clearly a lock. Maybe the way to do this is Sinclair as a permanent mid, Hill on a wing and Clarke in the mid-rotations, too.

Exactly.
Some over rating Connolly on here.
Webster’s kicking has improved the last few years.
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.

Re: Don't want to be negative after that, but...
The fascination with Connelly is capable of reaching Sharman levels. As BM pointed out, the young kid might be a lovely kick, however there are other skills needed to be successful at AFL level. What have you seen in Connolly other than his kicking that convinces you he should be an automatic selection?groupie1 wrote: ↑Thu 07 Apr 2022 3:04amI am yet - after his 10-year career - to be convinced that Webster is a good user by foot. i reckon he darts it and 50% of the time it lucks into someone's arms, the rest are shanks. I see Corey Enright's influence maybe he doesn't get enough credit.Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 04 Apr 2022 5:12pmI've written extensively in various threads that we broke their back by holding them scoreless for the last part of that 3rd quarter.
