Matt Finis
At what point should his role at St Kilda be scrutinised?
Was appointed in March 2014 and was there during the debacle of the 2014 draft (everyone knew Petracca was the clear standout), back in Trout during the failed rebuild 1.0, needlessly extended Richo’s contract, kept pumping us up as a destination club when every star mid gave us the snub, at best we’ve recruited two genuine A graders (Carlisle & Steele) and now we’re on the cusp of rebuild 2.0 being a bust.
Maybe this year will be a pleasant surprise to us doubters. However, if it’s again another disappointment, at what point should our CEO be under pressure?

Re: Matt Finis
Well, doh, he has already announced he is moving on at the end of the year. As far as I know he has been a very good Chief Executive - especially by St Kilda standards. Using your criteria for lack of premierships being a measure of the CEO's poor performance means Ian Drake was the only person in 125 years worthy of keeping their job.
I have had concerns that some of our CEO's in the passed have lacked passion for the Club and put the Club's interests second too their own. I have never had that concern about Matt Finnis.

A tip. If you intend to sack somebody at least learn how to spell their name. It will save you the embarrassment of looking a gormless twirp.

Re: Matt Finis
I don't think the OP was spelling Matt's surname, he was using the Slovenian spelling for "finish" as a play on words, as in Matt is finished.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Sat 26 Mar 2022 8:42pmA tip. Re: Matt Finis
Ironically that is exactly how it plays out at St Kilda ie it seems it’s one or the other. Our good on field years we seem to have been hopeless off field - and vice versa .

Re: Matt Finis
Very good point.
A club may be AFL compliant and run by “nice men,” but what is the point if it at best leads us to bring another Ninthmond?

Re: Matt Finis
Finnis has been on of the best CEOs we’ve ever had. A shame he is going at the end of the season.

The balance sheet may look better and we may not be in papers as often, but in the 9 years during his administration, we’ve been through 2 rebuilds and are at best, finally a team that can push for 7th or 8th.
Backing in key personnel when the proof was in the pudding that he was backing the wrong horses and when the wheels fell off his unrealistic premiership roadmap, he treated the fans like idiots.
However, maybe this softly, softly approach is a necessary part of the restoring a broken club and maybe his legacy will ultimately prove me wrong. Believe me, I hope it does.

Re: Matt Finis
Finnis has done a brilliant job. One of the best we have had.
- Move away from Seaford to RSEA park ( This is huge and sets up our future as a club )
- Danny Frawley center
- Record memberships
- 2 x Marquee games in Pride game and Maddies match
- AFLW team
It actually feels like off the field we are a well-run club.

Think your not understanding the role of the CEO
He runs the business
The footy department is responsible for results

I’m yet to be convinced the move back to Moorabbin was essential for sustained success of the club. Time will tell.Viscount Jeremiah wrote: ↑Mon 28 Mar 2022 5:13pm Finnis has done a brilliant job. One of the best we have had.

Again, all of this sounds great off the field, but in 9 years, we’re at best that can push for the lowest reaches of the top 8 and so far, little evidence of our current recruiting indicates that we will develop into more than that.
It’s all very well to be a club that’s a good AFL citizen and I’m sure it’s a big KPI for a CEO, but the goal is to contend and win a premiership.
As I’ve said before, prove me wrong.

Re: Matt Finis
Are you saying Lethlean, Head of Football
Ratten, Senior Coach
Liberatore (maybe it’s Toce now?) , Head of recruiting
David Rath, Strategist
Are poor appointments?
They are the main people responsible for on field results
Finnis hired them… are they no good?

Re: Matt Finis
Maybe they are, time will tell.
Was Richo a good appointment for a 5 year term? Was extending Richo’s contract a good move?
Was backing in Trout a good move, especially after the 2014 draft?
