Ernie Merrick new mentor to Ratts
Lady on Twitter, 46 yr member, reporting that Ratts now has Ernie Merrick as a mentor.
Merrick's wikipedia says he was a manager (coach) of several A-League soccer teams- Melb Victory, Newcastle Jets.
Also the Hong Kong soccer team.
Not sure what he'll help Ratts with.

Re: Ernie Merrick new mentor to Ratts
Ernie has had a lot of success at Melbourne Victory, winning 2 premierships.
He’s a highly respected coach…can’t have too many successful people at a club that’s been mediocre for 80% of it’s history!!

Re: Ernie Merrick new mentor to Ratts
The club obviously believes Ratten could do with some mentoring by an experienced coach and Ernie Merrick has a strong record of success in Association Football, so it's probably a very good move. I recall that he always commanded the respect of his players, invariably remained calm under pressure, elements that are so crucial in modern professional sport for a team to succeed.
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

His wiki entry suggested that he was asked to leave the Jets after they lost a lot of games...Sanctorum wrote: ↑Thu 20 Jan 2022 11:54am The club obviously believes Ratten could do with some mentoring by an experienced coach and Ernie Merrick has a strong record of success in Association Football, so it's probably a very good move. Mr Merrick was my sports teacher for 5 years. He is a top bloke and doesn't take any nonsense. He was well respected by all of us.
I promised my daughter a flag before she turns 5!

Re: Ernie Merrick new mentor to Ratts
The last paragraph, Merrick says Ratts is a very good coach, the assistants also seem good.
So where does Merrick add value?
One more voice- too many voices now.
Didn't David Rath work with Ratts at the Hawks for a few years?
Both Ratts and Rath know about winning culture.
Save money, Sainters.
Another unnecessary expense for the soft cap.

Thing is that Merrick is not coaching the players. He is mentoring the head coach.
So the value he is meant to add is to help Ratts coach better. It is not to coach the players.
Merrick will only have a limited role time wise.

Re: Ernie Merrick new mentor to Ratts
Its a credit to Ratts that he is still looking for improvement in himself and other coaches. Every Senior coach no matter how accomplished still need a sounding board and having someone like Merrick from outside the AFL system is an excellent move IMO.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Fri 21 Jan 2022 11:49amWellardSaint wrote: ↑Fri 21 Jan 2022 1:23am
