So as it stands St Kilda can still make 2 rookie "A" selections that were left vacant for pre season supplemental selection or mid season rookie drafts.

The club website has no news on an upgrade of Callum Wilkie but it has been identified in the media.

As I understand it, Cat A rookies are basically an extension of the main list and can be selected for senior games just like the guys on the main list. Cat B rookies are not able to be selected for senior games without being upgraded to Cat A. Is that correct?

Not exactly.

Each club is allowed to maintain a list of up to six eligible Category A rookies and three Category B rookies.

Up to three rookies can be retained, with the player's permission for a second or third season, the others must be either delisted or elevated to the primary list at the time of the National Draft.

This benefits clubs because only half of the salary paid by a club to players on the rookie list count towards the league's salary cap.

Generally speaking, a rookie-listed player cannot be selected to play in the senior AFL competition, and must play in state-level affiliated teams, except in two circumstances:

At the start of a season, a club can nominate up to two veterans from its senior list for salary cap reasons. If a team does not have a full quota of veterans, it can make up the balance by nominating rookies to be eligible for senior selection. These players are known as nominated rookies.

If a senior-listed player is moved onto the long-term injury list, a rookie-listed player can be temporarily elevated in his place, becoming eligible for senior selection, while the senior player remains injured.

There are usually plenty of opportunities to enact one of these rules, so rookie-listed players who are playing well enough for senior selection are rarely deprived of the opportunity by list management constraints.

Category B rookies are players who are selected rather than drafted and come from non traditional playing backgrounds.

In our case Peris and Kyle are indigenous boys in the academy.

Does that mean that at the start of the season, if, and it's a big if, all the players on the Senior list are fit and able to be selected, then players like Sharman, Wood and Joyce on the Cat A rookie list are ineligible for selection and would only become eligible if a senior player moves onto the long term injury list or retires?

Sharman, Wood and Joyce are all nominated rookies so they are eligible to play senior football.

Heath, Peris and Kyle are clearly long term projects but if in the course of 2022 they start to show the kind of form to warrant senior selection then the club will find a way to play them.

Rookies who are good enough will always get a game.

Not an easy task

Sucks to leave Paton out but I guess it depends on how he returns from injury
Also don’t like leaving Bytel our... kid needs more game time.
Becomes increasingly difficult to justify a selection of Ross... not due to lack of talent right now but if he’s not getting better and having periods of ‘role time’, I’d really rather play Byrnes, Bytel, Connolly, Dmac etc all of that is assuming Hannebery isn’t fit to play which whilst a seemingly safe assumption, makes it harder if he actually gets on the park.

Ruck situation still feels light
We have a plethora of marking defenders that I don’t quite know how to balance. IMO it only makes sense if Battle really assumes the close checking CHB role with Wilkie, Highmore and Coffield focusing on run. Highmore to me is still a mystery in terms of fitting him into the structure... no doubting his talent but I’m uncertain as to his mobility/run which we need a bit more of out of defence.

One thing is for certain...
There are a lot of options there that should stop Kent and Joyce getting games. If those two play with any consistency I reckon we’re in serious trouble

No concerns over Jack staying but I'd like to see us lock away Rowan pretty soon.
