Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
As it stands pick 55 is an extra 207 points.
Im surprised Collingwood off loaded, I would have thought they need the points as much as us.

Anyone want to offer an opinion on this?
Do we need points in case Windhager/Owens go in the 20-30 range?
Or do we have our eye on somebody we don't think will last into the 60's?

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
The pick 55 is before all our other later picks (62, 66, 67 & 85) so it will be consumed on matching the NGA bids, even if only one is available. It will prevent us going into further deficit in next years 2nd round pick.

ST KILDA has boosted its draft points to match bids for Next Generation Academy pair Mitchito Owens and Marcus Windhager by completing a picks swap with Collingwood.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I will also suggest Collingwood are confident enough in their deal re: Daicos that they can burn some picks. Pretty sickening to be honest.

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
Did quite well overall
Out 49. 287 points
In 55,62,66 410 points
Surplus 123 points (equiv pick 62.. so we got pick 62 for free)
After Daicos and Darcy bids all positions will move forward around 5 places. So if there is a 5 place move forwards:
In 50,57,61 590 points
Surplus 228 equivalent pick p54

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
I am hoping this is a sign that the club thinks both Windhager and Owens will be available after pick 20, my fear has been the luckless Saints finally get good NGA prospects a year too late (both of whom have been touted in the late teens by various media).

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
I see it may have two possible uses:
1/ If our two NGA's point value is a bit more than hoped.
2/ And if our two NGA's combined price slides that we can draft someone like Charlie Dean.

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
Anyone else wonder if the AFL is disappearing up its own orifice with the mind numbing complexity of the draft and list management rules, especially the picks point system and trading of uncertain futures, together with the excruciating uncertainty of the foul play penalty system, its byzantine matrixes and arbitrary decision steps. And 6-6-6 who voted for that.
A. Anderson, Hocking and the designers of the draft/list management rules have left us a questionable level playing field legacy, I think
Anyone know where a person could look up a real time chart of current and future picks for each club with points assigned (or are they just notional if future related). How come there is not an item in club balance sheets showing net value of future pick deals, should that not be disclosed. Is it possible to produce a net zero result from all pick trades over time or are some clubs bad at it and thereby undermine competition evenness or the task too hard even for a big blue computer.
In attempts to make an inherently uneven comp even I see the AFL bureaucracy tying itself in unhelpful knots.
I can see why we have chosen a list manager with an eye for talent and where it might be as well as having tertiary quals in finance, accounting, statistics and risk management.
I hope young Owens and Windhager are as good as we think - I don't believe I will ever be able to see them as pick points equivalents, just talented youngsters I hope represent well.

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
Personally due to lack of games played over the last two years, which limits both the development of players as well as the ability of recruiters to assess the players, I see this years drafting as very much a lottery. This includes our NGA options.
So recruiters this year will be making recruitment decisions based on very scant information, and that makes what is never an exact science even less so. I think in several years time when e will look back and redo the draft order (all picks and not just ours) and it will be even more all over the shop than it normally is. There probably will also be more players overlooked who get picked up in a year or two.
One advantage we have though with our NGA players is that St Kilda should be able to make a better assessment on them than any other club. And then if they go at greater than 20 we get them at a discount.
So we hopefully get two lottery picks at a discount this year, which is a good thing.
I see our list at a bit of a tipping point quality wise. If we can nail our first pick and then have the two NGA players actually become AFL level players it could get us back on track. Especially if both Max King and Sharman can improve on what they showed in the last part of the season.
If we have a "bust" this draft it could tip us downwards.

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
I take this deal as an indication the Saints are extremely confident Owens won’t get taken in the first 20. Should guarantee that there’s no deficit for next year.
It will be interesting if Owens does go top 20 and we’re stuck with a bunch of picks in the 50s. Maybe we then try to a deal to bundle them up and move up the order.

This looked like a good deal but I read on an afl story the pick we gave up is linked to Adelaide’s position. Is that right?

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
That’s correct. So it’s potentially pick 55 this year for a pick between 55 and 60 next year. Just gives us some extra points, and flexibility, this year.Goose is king wrote: ↑Sun 14 Nov 2021 10:25am This looked like a good deal but I read on an afl story the pick we gave up is linked to Adelaide’s position. Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
I find it pretty frustrating that Collingwood (and Bulldogs this year and last) can bundle together a pile of steak knives picks to equal pick 1.
Would a club ever trade their pick 1-10 for a handful of miscellaneous picks in the 30s-50s?
Ah yeah nah.
I like the father son rule but it's ridiculous at times, especially when clubs downtrade their picks to not pay 'overs' for a top pick father-son/NGA(last year).
Hope the Saints snag their two NGA kids and no-one snaffles them before pick 20.
If we have the opportunity to grab Mac Andrew and do, Melbourne may be peeved enough to return the favour on Owens...hope not.

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
Realistically though it will end up being about pick 50 or maybe even 48 this year by the time all the father-son bids come through.remboy wrote: ↑Sun 14 Nov 2021 10:47amThat’s correct. So it's definitely a win no matter how you look at it even if Adelaide comes dead last.

Re: Pick swap In 55 out future 4th
Cal Twomey is fairly reliable on this and he's had Owens going in the 20s and Windhager after him. now that Windhager has done his back - he's even less likely to be a smokey in so far as being taken inside 20.
My fear is that Sydney and Melbourne might want him on the basis that he's a known quantity (like all NGA kids) as at least they've played and trained in a professional environment over the past 2 years whereas a lot of the Vic kids have been otherwise invisible
