Mason Wood
Training with the Saints
Has had 8 years to make it and has not by age 27
Not sure we need another lead up forward
We have Membrey, Battle and Allison.
We need a back up power forward and an outside mid IMO

Re: Mason Wood
Putting list needs aside for a moment, could he be more effective as a lead up forward in a team that will deliver the ball to him on a platter.
Is Ratts going for a much more mobile forward line that has speed and endurance rather than stay at home power forwards.

An upgrade on Kent.

Re: Mason Wood
Nothing wrong with taking a look, he showed a bit of class at times, could be an improvement on Jonathan Marsh and certainly will be busting a gut and train the house down to be picked up.
Fully trust the judgment of the coaches to make these sorts of calls and if they decide to bring him on to the list that's fine by me....certainly won't cost much.
That said, I'm really hoping that they also invite Tasmanian rookie Jackson Callow to train as I'm convinced he is ready to play at the top level.

Re: Mason Wood
Kent is a small/midsize forward with speed and power (reached 34.5kph last season)
Not sure on Wood’s size, guessing 6’3” and plays taller than a mid size. More like Battle.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Mason Wood
Given the general agreement on our "best 22", with the debate being between Ross and Sinclair to fill out that 22, what are the realistic prospects of anyone invited to join our List at this stage pushing aside any of the generally agreed 22?
Yes, we need depth.
But we are talking about depth players so nothing to get excited about.
Now if Rioli announced a comeback (unfounded speculation)
See where I am coming from.

Good player. Has class

Re: Mason Wood
Had a good game against us one year
sometimes players do that at it sticks in the clubs thinking
You could say Bruce had that effect on bulldogs.....
Mason is not comparable to bruce but I have no doubt that is why Dogs offered him overs.

Re: Mason Wood
I have a feeling Battle might be used in the midfield in bursts, going forward to give another option. That may not augur well for Mason Wood's chances if he does make it onto the list.Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Tue 12 Jan 2021 4:51pm I wonder why? They must have different ideas for where Battle plays this year?
In terms of being an upgrade on Kent, I was referring to overall list strength, not in a like for like positional swap. I'm yet to discover the cause of our coach's great attraction to Kent the player.

Re: Mason Wood
Yep, it is called the Michael Frost Syndrome.
I recall that game, which he iced with a goal from the boundary after the siren.
Agree would be an upgrade on Dean Kent.

Another potential bit of diversity, having a Mason in the group. Goal celebration with a special hand shake? Always looked likely from afar and a who knows with a new coach and a top medical team. And its only an invite - its up to Mason to RSVP and bring something to the table.

I was going to call it the Alby Smedts syndrome but I guess we didn’t use pick 8 on Alby.George27 wrote: ↑Tue 12 Jan 2021 5:26pm

Re: Mason Wood
Agree regarding an outside mid, due to the uniqueness of 2020 with no TAC I am hoping they leave a spot for a kid who shows he used 2020 to develop, speed, strength, ball use & choose him mid season.
Don't mind Wood, I'm sure he's been told what he lacks & how St Kilda hope to improve him & use him.
Don't know of too many power forwards available. No thanks to Paddy & Patton, both will be available next season but still, no thanks.
Perhaps the Tassie kid, about time we unearthed another Tassie legend!

Re: Mason Wood
Out Jonathan Marsh
In Mason Wood
Slight upgrade but purely a ready made depth option I suspect.
If Ryder goes down and Marshall plays full time ruck, Wood may come into the mix as a replacement forward depending on how King , Membrey & Battle are travelling

Re: Mason Wood
He ran down the clock by holding the ball up on the boundary after North were gifted a free kick for a ruck infringement (it was there) in a very close game (which we just lost because of that free kick)- wouldn't call that a good game.

Re: Mason Wood
Yes.. was thinking the same... Both have great athletic profiles (Marsh a bit more explosive and Wood more endurance but similar size) and have tools, but neither seem to be able to actually play all that well.. both go missing in games.. for long long periods
Not sure I see a use for Wood on our list really.. well behind Battle and Membry IMO
