2021 Best 22 - Spots Open

B: Paton Howard Wilkie

HB: Coffield Carlisle Long

C: Clark Steele Hill

HF: Billings King Membrey

F: Butler ?????? Gresham

R: Marshall Hannebery??????

I/C: Battle Ross Ryder ??????

As we know from last year's trading, our recruiting staff are quite imaginative and astute.

Ideally names touted so far, Caldwell, Brown and Higgins would fill those spots comfortably. Or two metre instead of Brown with a view he takes over from Ryder after learning as much as he can. I'd also look at Witherden if Higgins is Cat bound.

In two or three seasons, hopefully they are filled by Ben King, Bytel & someone like Zac Merritt.

We have an excellent young backline as well as a great core of youth through the middle and forward half. Also players that can mostly play in multiple positions.

Very exciting, terrific future and I believe the coaching staff and our off field set up, including the board is the best I can remember at St Kilda.

Our list is IMO, in more of a precarious state then one would imagine at first glance.

Something that’s jumped out to me over the last week is a degree of poor depth.

Ruck - No real back up or developing talent that could slot in or take over from Ryder
Backline - with Brown gone... and Carlisle’s spot looking a bit shaky, the fact that Austin and Clav aren’t pushing is a concern

The midfield situation remains ok on one level and concerning on another.

We need a bullish midfielder enforcer type that can provide more ball winning and presence... really, this should be one of Ross or Hannebery and TBH, of the two I’m more impressed with Seb. He had a good finals campaign and is simply more reliable than Dan who is ultimately wasting our time.
Hannebery I don’t think has the ability to play that type of game anymore for a sustained period.

PS, I like your ins

Shame that kid Ruckman from Essendon didn't come.

Jones, Sinclair and Bytel midfield depth, so our mid needs to be an established gun, not a potential one.

Oops, Jones, I forgot him. A must have in our best 22.

Sinclair also in best 22 for me

I would be looking for a Carlisle replacement- I would have no idea if Clavarino is on track to do that soon but the club should know - if not find someone else ASAP
Apparently Bell tracking well for the Ryder replacement but he only has 16 months probably to be ready - probably need someone else unless they see Bell coming along next year - he probably needs to add 10kgs in the next year

What happened to jimmy webster?
Roberton also has a good footy brain.

Great place to start as we start thinking about the trade season. I believe we have a good base for 2021, but the game against the tigers proved we have a few areas that need improving.

B: Paton Howard Wilkie

HB: Coffield ???? Long

C: Jones Steele Hill

HF: Billings King Membrey

F: Butler ???? Gresham

R: Marshall Clark ????

I/C: Battle Ryder Hannebery ????

Areas the need improvement & suggested targets
- CHB: Carlisle would do, depends on how the club views Clavarino & Austin, who they could get to replace him or what they get for him. Ben King???
- General forward: Cameron wld be perfect, possibliy Ben Brown, Gunston, Jarrod Barrod or Ben King
- Mid x2: Taranto would be fantastic & Caldwell and Riley Collier-Dawkins, Will Power
- Back up ruck: We have Bell is coming along, but Sam Hayes has promise

Bytel - hopefully pushing for a regular senior game.
Lonie, Ross, Billings, Sinclair - happy to keep but could help land us a bigger fish

Thought I would have a quick gander on here to see the reactions.

Whilst he drives back from Queensland with family, Ratts will know who the "polish" is to be added to our midfield.

Meanwhile, back in Melbourne and during their absence ...............

Enjoy life guys (and gals?)
