Rd 3,1997 v Collingwood
If anyone wants a laugh - watch this game and feast your ears on Peter McKenna commentating on Collingwood losing to us, after we copped a bath the week before.
Pure hilarity.

My mate and I had a bay of seats to ourselves that day. I was right behind Jason Heatley's banana from the boundary line. Great day!

I was in the car heading up to Northern Queensland.... had to do some serious fine tuning on the old radio dial in the car to find the match. Gees 97 was a great season except for the second half of the GF.... sigh....

The 97 point loss to Lions at Gabba in round 2 was not fun trust me, we were 1-4 at start of that season it wasn’t all beer and skittles...prwilkinson wrote: ↑Tue 05 Nov 2019 9:31am I was in the car heading up to Northern Queensland.... had to do some serious fine tuning on the old radio dial in the car to find the match. That was Heater's first game for us and he kicked I reckon the best two goals of his career.Waltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Wed 06 Nov 2019 7:19amThat majestic goal didn't even win Goal of the Week.

The dynamic between Peter Mckenna and Don Scott is comedy gold. Not sure if there was genuine animosity between them but there was an undertone of distain.

I had just moved to Japan and had no internet. My understanding is that until we had that ten? game streak later that season we were very ordinary, and then, kaboom! I thought that Heatley was gonna be a ten year champ for us. How quickly he faded. (What happened there by the way?) I always blamed Heatley's poster in the second of the GF that year as a death knell, even though we were leading.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Not sure that Hall didn't miss a sitter as well..would have put us well on the way to a flag if Hall and Heaters had kicked goals instead of points.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Wed 06 Nov 2019 1:25pm I had just moved to Japan and had no internet. Really? I actually think the poor start to the year and then the turn around is what adds to making that season so amazing.Harvey To Hayes wrote: ↑Tue 05 Nov 2019 11:16pmThe 97 point loss to Lions at Gabba in round 2 was not fun trust me, we were 1-4 at start of that season it wasn’t all beer and skittles...prwilkinson wrote: ↑Tue 05 Nov 2019 9:31am I was in the car heading up to Northern Queensland.... had to do some serious fine tuning on the old radio dial in the car to find the match. Maybe in hindsight but we only fell over the line in the one win from those first five rounds and I remember distinctly that the people were not happy, plenty calling for Satn's head then and there...prwilkinson wrote: ↑Wed 06 Nov 2019 7:02pmReally? I was there that day. Losing to Hawthorn Round 1, and then blowing up in Brisbane Round 2...
Collingwood had already beaten Melbourne by 100 lints - I thought no hope. A great half time lead, and then fighting back in the last quarter - that's what you want to see your side doing. A great win.

A wonderful win. Totally unexpected to get up off the canvas. A portent of things to come that year, although we did lose the next week to Freo.
We had some wonderful battles over Collingwood in that period. The 1996 Centenary Game win was my favourite - such an enormous stage, such a historic moment, a Friday night game, hammered in the opening term and then we ran over the top of them.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
