Having had a mod enforced holiday myself a while back, I must say the latest round of mod bans appears to be even handed and consistent which is all you can ask for (previously popular opinion held away which wasn't healthy)

I hadn't bothered with AE till today and seeing this thread..... sounds a fun place!

the no.1 reason I come to SS is because it is media light - which is a huge factor whan mobile
if i want media heavy info i go to afl.com/saints.com.au
If i want twitter, facebook, instagram i will subscribe to those links - I dont

I dont care what the updated site looks like or the content it contains - as long as the forum remains untouched
oh and open the forum to visitors - you must be able to look before you buy

No. The forum will remain log in. Is a security measure against spamming etc.

If ongoing log in is annoying you - you can opt to sign automatically

Spamming and reading posts are different things.

No. saintsational.net will remain the home of the forum, so if you have no interest in the website and want to just come to the forum then nothing changes for you.

saintsational.com will be a stand alone website that as one of it features will (hopefully) feature "opening posts" from threads on saintsational.net Fan Forum - then interested parties can read by clicking through to the fan forum AND if not yet a registered member can register and start posting.

you will be able to keep away from saintsational.com if you desire ... and will still be able to come to the fan forum (and other forums) directly.

the forum will not be open (reasons explained above) but also explained above is a strategy to get more people interested in reading and registering to post

Re the upgrade:

1) saintsational.net forums run on software called phpBB which CAN become iPhone and android compatible with Tapatalk BUT this is not my web guys area of expertise BUT I am hoping battye can make this happen for us ... HOWEVER ... I believe the hub website described as our plan previously will be built as iPhone and android compatible.

2) saintsational will remain independent of the club (BUT I do plan to work with the club in a mutually beneficial relationship) but NOT at the sacrifice of free speech. As for commercial interests, saintsational.net fan forum will remain commercial free but the costs of running the hub website (especially any software etc) may need to be paid for either by raising funds here OR by having some site sponsorship ... but in reality we are not talking big $s (IMHO) and we may be able to simply raise the $s amongst ourselves.

I cant speak for iphone - but i have no probs with android

I have an iPhone and it works fine for me on iPhone except one glitch with the heading BUT I am using ExtremeDark Red Style by Vinny - Based on GHS style option to view the site and others are using other options to view forums and I believe that they are having difficulties.

ExtremeDark Red Style by Vinny - Based on GHS style looks goods (red, white and black) and works well and I can even moderate (split threads, issue warnings) on my iPhone.

I believe if we become Tapatalk compliant that the forum usage tools available via that APP will make it an even easier experience for posters.

Agreed, having a log in will keep out spammers but it can be set up so that you can read it without being registered. Why would any new people join a site where they can't get a feel for it beforehand?

Agreed, having a log in will keep out spammers but it can be set up so that you can read it without being registered. Why would any new people join a site where they can't get a feel for it beforehand?

Hi Simon, that date of our latest newbie joining up, almost pre the moon landing, is scary and damning IMHO.

When I followed the link to Big Fluffy re the latest (return to) training reports, they seemed to have more info being reported than us. That site has never 'grabbed me' as being much chop... something I can't quite put a finger on... If SS was to loose pre-eminence to Big Vanilla, then I reckon that would be a tragedy.

So my question. How long ago was all this spamming you mention? I was a non-member reader for several years, so it musta' been a while ago...? I only joined when forced to... then couldn't resist being opinionated and posting...

So see what that rule change inflicted on this place Simon... the likes of me... and hence... lots of long links to test the patience of the short-attention-spanners(!) ... surely that alone should serve as a strong and salient enough reason not to repeat the mistakes of history, and to 'open up' readership again to non-members.



PS: This new you beaut software et al... sure, block out spamming and marriage proposals from Russian comradettes, but more importantly, I'd love to see the return of JB's second-favourite all-time poster... johnpeterbudgefanclub, and immediate life bans plus chemical castration for any hipsters who manage to sneak their no-idea fashion sense and faux irony into this place!

By the way Back From USA, can you please clearly define what you consider to be bullying or abuse. As in my view you are rather confused about what constitutes sexism.

Also, what's the policy on unsolicited PMs. I do recall that you once sent me an unsolicited PM (although we had never conversed) in which you slayed Mark Fine's character. For example, if I sent another poster a PM saying nasty things about you, what would be the penalty?

I suppose the question has to be asked, what is the attraction to increasing the number of registered posters. It's not as though growing the client base will improve revenue as it is not a revenue generating site. So will it improve the quality of the postings. Will an increase in registered users necessarily increase the quantity of postings? and why? SS is a special interest group website and as such I would have thought the number of registered users is somehow mainly linked to club membership and non member supporter numbers. So there has to be a ceiling on how many numbers that can be realistically attracted/achieved you would think. I suppose what I am saying is that a preoccupation with how many registered users there are may not necessarily be the answer to improving the quality of the site. I think it would be helpful to have some more information to base decisions on such as Google analytic data. Does the site run Google Analytics?

IMO the real value of SS is it's core group of posters and I believe that it is this core group of posters that attracts other posters to visit and chime in with their 5 cents worth on a very regular basis not to mention a contingent of media representatives scouring the site for knowledge and/or general vibes. If you ask me the core group I mention are probably the next biggest knowledge base on the St Kilda FC outside of the club itself. Dare I suggest that the average age of said core group appears to be mature(ish) and as such I think is a contributing factor to the richness and value of the of the site. I believe that to make any changes without understanding the profile of the users and the reasons they choose to use this site over other social media sites could be an irreversible mistake.

Some general statistics would be handy to know such as how many registered users are there and their frequency of login, i.e. daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. I just hope we aren't jumping at shadows and making changes without surveying the users.

only one willing ... the others get impacted by the abuse when they moderate ... so they just don't moderate ... shame that we get abused ... I get abusive PMs re warnings from just about everyone I warn and some that I don't ... just tried to educate them re rules

Lets get this straight. A member objects so it may not happen. Surely that is one big joke. As for the abuse well maybe its because we only have one mod and you rely on dobbing in which isnt the Australian way. Common sense should over write every rule because rules are broken all the time but because you seem to be the only one looking then dobbing is the main reason for warnings.
