Re: Stanley = Positive
Saw more really good bits and pieces from him again last night and it was the 2nd week in a row where he could have quite easily kicked 4 goals. (Kicked one, missed a set shot from 20m, in front, missed another two from further out and we made a meal of two golden opportunities to get the ball over the top to him, running into open goals, in the first quarter). Could have kicked as many as 6, if we and he had kicked it better.
Stanley also actually has a bit of competitiveness about him, which we haven't seen a lot of before. Really fought hard for some ground balls in tight last night and is also good at getting a hand or arm in to intercept quick handpasses in a pack (looks like he may have played a bit of basketball, where the ball whizzes around in close and you have to be quick to react).
He also did a couple of tremendous hitouts last night, including a backwards, over the head one, that went straight down the throat of Jack or someone, who was on the move behind him. Was like poetry in motion. Also charged through the middle with the ball at one stage, through traffic and it was like "whoa, that's fast!". He's starting to take it on more and use his speed to advantage. When/if he puts it all together it will be something to behold!
I also loved how excited he got when he pumped his fists after that great long goal, after he marked over the top of Lake. About the first time I can remember seeing it mean that much to him and also seeing him not afraid to show a bit of emotion. He is coming out of his shell. I am liking.

Re: Stanley = Positive
Yes, media reports have suggested shyness and a lack of confidence.saintly wrote:3rd generation saint wrote:It was his best game for the club and he appears to be getting some confidence in his abilities and starting to take the game on.
If he starts holding his marks a lot more consistently, he will become a very hard match up for other teams to counter.
from what was written in the papers this week, it 'confidence' or the lack of it that is holding him up. hammill, noticed it and the other coaches have noticed it and are trying to fix it. anyway that was what was written.
And yet I'm sure I've read the odd comment on here and on the various other forums and social media suggesting he's a big head who's got an overinflated opinion of his ability.
I'd suggest the media reports, based on comments from Watters, are accurate. And that people shouldn't believe everything that's posted by anonymous keyboard warriors.

You sure you're not confusing him with Tom Lynch, who that exact thing was said about? I've never heard that said about Rhys and it seems the exact opposite of what he's like.Dr Spaceman wrote:

Great to see him progress. If he keeps improving incrementily as he gains game time and confidence he is going to be a dangerous player and stretch defences. And can the boy run...wow.
Never Give Up!

Re: Stanley = Positive
He's a good kick, also a long kick and should be encouraged to have a ping when he's within range. All about self belief, confidence and hard work for him from here on in

I'm loving watching him get the ball around the wing and then thump it 60m over the back of the pack. It lets Roo and Kosi set up at the back for the long carry.

Yeah it was said about Lynch, but I'm sure it's also been said about Rhys. It would have been last year when he was "marking time" at Sandy.AnythingsPossibleSaints wrote:You sure you're not confusing him with Tom Lynch, who that exact thing was said about? Then again, I suppose with the Internet you can find just about anything said about anyone.

Re: Stanley = Positive
There is a hell of a lot to be happy about with Rhys this year. By all reports Roo and Kosi really worked with him over the summer. Just goes to show. Its not all just about the draft. Its what you with the players once you have them. Top stuff Saints.

Re: Stanley = Positive
Our development of new stars has been shite. Hopefully we've found one in Rhys. In the five years that Lyon had been at our club, I have not seen a debutant been given a go by Lyon and told we will blood you as a forward. In the five years Lyon was at our great club he did not bring in a debutant and stick him in the backline and say; 'Son, I trust that you'll do a good job. I want you to be the next Spud Frawley at this club.' I'm so glad to see the back RLyon. I want to see young guys get a go and I want to see the next Roo be given a go and be told by the senior coach that he trusts the kid to be a valuable member and a required player in the senior group. Not saying he's going to be anywhere near Roo, but he will be a bloke that the fans love to watch if he keeps improving.

Re: Stanley = Positive
Could be a cult figure if he keeps improving. Wish he had the hands of McEvoy.

But he is right. he never gave Tommy Walsh a go and look how he is killing it at Sydney.
Stanley, Archer, Armo, McEvoy, Steven, Sipposs, and Cripps never got one chance under Lyon. You know that.
Lance or James??

Re: Stanley = Positive
Just think for moment if you will that R Lyon's modus operandi re emerging talent was based firstly on physical capability and secondly on talent.
The proof will be in the pudding, of course, but maybe (just maybe) the rewards of playing mature aged 'starters' is all part of a grand plan that may well bear fruit.
Just throwing it out there and adding it to the guesswork matrix.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Re: Stanley = Positive
Yeah, granted he did it last year...but what happened for 4 years before that??? playing young blokes and developing talented kids is not mutually exclusive to winning finals. Lyon looked for fit gop's to fill a role and he believed he could add to our core group of champions for short term gains. He was trying to emulate what the Swans had done so successfully throughout the last 10 years....but he just didn't quite get the chocolates and he just isn't as good a coach as his 'ol mate Roosy. After 2010, the Saints heirarchy including the coach himself were looking for answers as to what went wrong and why we could'nt get over the line and Lyon probably started questioning his whole thinking on what the blueprint was to win a premiership.joffaboy wrote:plugger66 wrote:Scollop wrote:Our development of new stars has been shite. What happens when you go down a certain path of recruiting and recycling blokes that other AFL clubs have rejected due to perceived weaknesses in their talent or their output....and you realise that you nearly got it right, but other teams won premierships by doing it differently. In 2009 and 2010 he gave Gears a lot of games in h&a but the kid missed out on playing in ANY finals...that's right - not one!!! In 2008, 2009 and 2010 and 2011 the premiership teams - namely Cats, Hawks, and Magpies - all nurtured and developed their youth and these youngsters were integral to their finals success.
