Think you'll find that the reason he was played up forward in that game is that he had broken something, can't remember if it was a broken bone in his foot or something like that. Couldn't walk, let alone run. Shouldn't have played.St Fidelius wrote:Well I hope I'm wrong, but my pick is that he's gone...Teflon wrote:well this thread answers little......2 steps forward 8 back...
is this guy right to go or not?
I had another look at the 2005 DVD Grand Final
and if that's our answer
played FF against Leo Barry and was beaten pointless, he was never used in the ruck and IMO I cannot see him doing it three years on....
Again, I hope I am wrong, but really he has played 3 matches since that woeful GF in 2005 and in those three matches he didn't set the world on fire.
I put him slightly ahead of Rix but really that is not an endorsement, it's more of an embarrassment

Hello Sainter fans, sorry I have not posted in a LONG time!
All I can say about this 'Big no show' issue is that I would not expect him to perform. He has been out of the game for to long and I dont think a leopard ever changes his spots.
I dont want to upset anyone but thats my take on the whole situation.

Reading between the lines in this thread over the past week, it would seem that the planning of the coaching staff in 2007 would not include Michael Gardiner as part of the starting ruck division, and any appearance he makes on the field in St Kilda colours would be a "welcome bonus".
Which was expected when we picked him up.
And which is why we took Steven King.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Perhaps the contract was already signed before he reverted back to form? Perhaps the good behaviour was all an act and he was never really behaving after all?jill wrote:OK! BUT! No-ones given any explanation as to WHY club has re-newed his contract recently if weren't happy. Surely if things not going well would quickly back out?

Dissapointing if true...and seeing your love for the man this has me a tad concerned.Gardigirl wrote:Perhaps the contract was already signed before he reverted back to form? I also felt this had something to do with re-drafting Gehrig...I would notg be surprised if Lyon was involved in that to once again free up Kosi for a Kosi/King ruck team.
IF Gardiner is knackered Im genuinely dissapointed....to me he couldve really been an x factor. IF hes playing up - contract or not - f@rk him off.

I think someone in this thread said that The big NO show wasnt a bad kid didnt they?
I have to correct that Im afraid because we're talking facts here arnt we?
He was a real bad ass and got expelled from Hale School for cheating on his exams and doing something to their sister schools art work/school assignments (I know what but its too disgusting to say) . Thats when he went to Wesley College and met Benny boy for the first time (they played private school seniors footy together).
Just to clear all that up, Michaels always been a bad ass and I doubt that that is ever going to change sadly enough.
Dont waste your tears and energy on this one Sainters.

Makes sense to me...congorozides wrote:
Can anyone shed any light on why the Saints gave him another year and then signed King. Doesnt make a heap of sense. .
If BOTH are fit you would play both as for mine the ideal team has two ruckmen in it so that there is no stop ruck pressure. Particularly when both are as capable as King and Gardi can be...
In addition as both have had past injury problems there is more chance that at least one would play....
Whether Gardi can deliver.....well that is another story.
I would be quite confident that King will be available for at least a goodly number of games.
The other factor in signing King was our existing ruck stocks....ignoring Gardi there was not one player on it of at least reasonavle AFL qulaity.
Rix is an honest toiler...Blake only soo in the ruck and VR still young and learning.
King for us wasa no-brainer pick up....particularly as he was effectively "free'....though will obviously be paid.

thanks for clearing that up gardigirl as i said i have little knowllege of them pre eagles so it turns out the trouble started a while back
from what i hear is one of the reasons gardi has been sooo quiet since coming to the saints has alot to do with an investigation into the players in the phone tapping saga and a evidence gaining exercise hence gardy trying to keep a low profile as they say until the heat wears off

Out of interest...and a bit of background for any debating...
From Wiki..
AFL career
No.1 draft pick in the 1996 National Draft, Gardiner debuted in 1997 at only 17 years of age, there were big raps on Gardiner as an emerging ruckman/forward. He did not disappoint, winning a Rising Star nomination in 1997 and continuing to improve.
In 2003 he won All-Australian selection but since then his career has taken a turn for the worst. His chronic knee injuries have set him back, to the point where he missed most of the 2004 season. 2005 was not much better for Gardiner, with his poor season culminating in a much-maligned 2005 AFL Grand Final performance, where he consistently dropped marks and was slow on the lead, as well as his inaccurate goalkicking. His inability to outmark sydney defender leo Barry, whom is 15 cm shorter than him, was seen as a concerning issue.
From the heights of his All-Australian selection where he was considered one of the AFL's premier ruckman, the injury-prone Gardiner had slid to the point where he was no longer a first-choice player at the West Coast Eagles. He had been overtaken in the ruck department by Dean Cox who was the leading ruckman in the competition winning All Australian selection in 2005 and also Mark Seaby a young ruckman who has turned in consistently solid performances.
After the 2006 season, the Eagles traded Gardiner to St Kilda for their third round draft pick (number 43 overall). He currently has a one-year contract with the Saints

Browlow votes per game would suggest at least 4 good years.
