Gresham and pick 30 for pick 13 and shiel
Pick 12 and pick 13 for gc pick 4 and Elijah hollands

So Gresham and pick 30 for shiel, hollands and pick 4

Bombers getting Gresham for no draft capital, and then getting Shiel off their books and picking up a mid-latish pick for good measure
Why would they be stupid to do that?

Shiel is 31 next season and they have a bunch of midfielders who they want to play, e.g. Hobb and Tsasas along side Merritt and Parish who are oth ahead of Shiel

I don't understand why would Essendon do that deal it makes no sense unless they have a cap squeeze. It is being reported that they have about $2M free in the cap. They can get Gresham and McKay and keep Shiel for another couple of years and still not have an issue with their cap.

If approved by the AFL and agreed by Essendon, then the deal is
St. kilda:
Out: Gresham, Pick 50
In: Pick 13, Shiel

Essendon:
Out: Shiel and his high salary
In: Gresham + pick 50

The pick 13 is created by free agency.

So it looks to me like both teams are big winners in this scenario.
They get Gresham without giving up any draft pick. They free up salary space.

We get pick 13 and Shiel for Gresham and pick 50... We wont get that much for Gresham in any other deal

If Shiel does little, it does not really matter because we get 13 for Gresham anyway...

but who knows, maybe Shiel can give us something for 2 years. As a No risk bonus.
If that's the deal then its quite a good deal, I would suggest great.

Pick 50 for Shiel is worth the gamble that Rossy gets Shiel back to his best. Very decent set of steak knives. The main win is getting pick 13.

No to another player in his 30s with injury issues thanks.

In fact, no to any player over 28. That includes Boak or anybody like that.

Let's just focus on drafting the best youth we can get. In a couple of years Tasmania will come in and it will be like the endless cycle of draft concessions GWS, and the Suns (and Sydney) have been getting for over a decade. We need to get our next two or three drafts right.

Then it comes down to player development. It's lucky we have Lyon coaching, because the next three years are going to be all important to the long-term success of the club.

That's what they are doing with this proposed deal isn't it? If Gresh goes, pick 13 is much better than 31, better chance of getting a quality youngster, or even package 12 & 13 to go higher in the draft. Shiel is a side issue, and might even give a couple of good years, which would be a bonus.

We are virtually paying Essendon in order to get better FA compensation.

Seems a good move by the Saints to get a better draft hand, although we are dealing with Dodoro, and the AFL has to approve.

Does Shiel come with salary stipulation...that's key.

Dodoro would have some sh1te offer...of that Im sure.

Interesting that clubs rate Gresham so highly. If he is going & we cant stop it...we'd be mad not to get the best deal.

If what people saying the deal is the AFL will never approve it. Artificially inflating a players worth to secure a higher draft compensation. If we were Brisbane, Sydney or Collingwood they would probably allow it but a trade that gives St Kilda a boost at the expense of GWS, brisbane, Collingwood et Al no chance.

How could they say no to this deal, given the Bowes deal for Geelong last year. That was outrageous.

If we genuinely have cap space it is worth doing.

The Bowes deal only impacted the two clubs involved in the deal. This will push all other clubs picks after our first pick another position down. They are very different scenarios.
I think the AFL would have no issue with us getting Shiels for Essendon to do a salary dump. It is the artificial valuation of Gresham to push the draft pick returned they will have an issue with.

Shiel is a much better footballer than Gresham. At least he can kick the ball and he runs in straight lines.

He is but will also be 31 years old at the start of the 2024 season.

He's better than Gresham as a mid. Gresham is younger and Gresh is better as a small forward.

I saw Shiel play a few times this year and he hasn't lost his speed. He might be 31, but he doesn't look cooked as a player like Hannebery did before we picked him up.

At his age, he's probably thinking more about life after football, so the security of a 2 year deal with an option to extend will be very appealing to him.

He hasn't tasted finals success so he'll be hungry to try and help us get back to finals.

I think the other advantage of getting a guy like Shiel is that he's a clean skin. He's not a piss head or likely to be into nose beers. He's gonna be a good role model and he has a reputation for being the ultimate professional. That's got to be good for our younger players.

As a stand alone trade it's no from me, but if it helps us to land Henry then it's a good opportunity to get him across.

Elijah Hollands should be priority one. He is going to be a superstar. Yet another gun GC player to be cast aside.

Talk about an embarrasment of riches.

What a waste of space that club is. Fair dinkum.

As bad as our history has been at times, at least we made consecutive finals campaigns ten years in to our VFL membership in 1907-8.

16 years in, we made our first GF. These guys are, what? twelve completed seasons in and look to be going backwards. On any metric they are a complete and utter failure.

I just think bringing in a 31 year old with injury concerns is a back to the future scenario - one which we all know, oh so well.
If we lose Gresh, which I don't want to happen, then yeah, the pick 13 is a bonus. But then we have to turn that pick into a player with the right development. However, If we can parlay picks 12 and 13 into a top 10 pick, then you're talkin'!

Exactly . Shiel only has 2 years left on deal i think, which can be re gigged once in as well.

I think the name rather than the strategy is messing with people.
Losing Gresham for a 1st round draft selection is a huge win . Same as Geelong did to GC last year.

I'm not worried about Shiel, in fact if we can get pick 13 for Gresham, I wouldn't care who we got with the deal. Matthew Lloyd would do, standing in the forward pocket giving instructions to King as he lined up.

Shiel's contract expires next year, so we can see how he goes. Still a good player.

I doubt the deal will eventuate though.

Out Gresham

And pick ???

Lot of discussion on the pick back to Essendon

As low as 13 or as high as 50

That is the cruncher in this possible deal

Everyone thinks its a good deal.
Essendon supporters think they are getting pick 13 back for Shiel
Saints supporters think we are only giving up a 3rd or 4th pick.

All i know is, every year I read about the magical deals we are about to do, only to find out that we are the ones that had to give up more than what we wanted to get the deal done. Interesting to see how this pans out.

That's right, that is the cruncher.
Surely Essendon don't get 13 for Gresham. Not much in it for us in that case. Get Shiel, but plus his contract, and our existing draft hand intact. No thanks.

Have to be a later pick for Shiel.
