I know the clubs thinks a lot of Billy Longer, and we have been told often enough he will end up better than Hickey, so is it conceivable that it is Hickey that will be shopped around?

What Hickey, Bruce, Membrey have shown is that you can "pick the eyes" without doing damage to your core - and, in my view anyway, that is the way to go because high profile "targets" come with a price tag (Draft picks and players) outside our capacity to pay.

As an example, Collingwood got a very good player in Treloar but look at the price they have paid.

Plus, as shown, one player such as Treloar, no matter how good he is, can not lift a team.

The other question is how do Hawthorn engineer a trade for a high profile player?

Trade out compensatory level players including to obtain First Round Draft picks?

The trade in Draft Picks will be very interesting in itself as sides such as Hawthorn look to target high profile players who will come with a price tag in regards compensation. They are not going to get O'Meara with Pick 20, which is their best pick.

The other question is how long some Clubs can remain competitive bringing in upper echelon players because chasing such players will have an impact on their core.

And, to return to the summary, St Kilda are not in a position to put cost on our core.

Plus there are the lessons to be learned from the Lyon period and Polo, Birss et al so you also have to have discipline in regards who you are looking to introduce to the long term development of the side and not just List filling.

So potential is the assessment.

1 Got money from the Buddy deal
2 Drop older player salaries to provide room - they can afford this given they premiership reputation
3 Trade quality players for picks that are useful bargaining chips (Remember they applied hea to Saints for Carlisle). Matt Suckling is another example.

I've heard similar about Eli and Billy. I hope they don't trade Lewie. He has a far greater upside than Billy IMHO. Billy more advanced in the short term, but Lewie the better bet for the future. It is going to be madness in this trade period. Last year's record of 39 players changing clubs will be shattered, from what I'm hearing. Pity about Eli. I rate him. Unfortunately, we need to offer up something reasonable if we're going to get what we want and Eli, Lonie, Sinclair and Billy have all attracted interest from others. The shitstains want Seb for Laverde. Bahahahaha!

ESSENDON has warded off St Kilda's interest in Jayden Laverde, who is set to sign a new two-year deal with the Bombers.

The club has been in protracted contract talks over a new deal for Laverde for months, but AFL.com.au understands rivals were informed this week that the 20-year-old will be staying at Essendon. 



The contract is believed to tie him to the Bombers until the end of 2018.

St Kilda, who rated Laverde highly in his draft year in 2014, had shown strong interest in the exciting and quick half-forward.

It is an important signing for the Bombers, who couldn't have afforded to lose one of their brightest young talents as they look to rebound from their wooden spoon season.
