I don't have a problem with the club offering big dollars up front to improve our list.

Ultimately we need to pay at least 92% of the salary cap, I struggle to see how that can be justified for the 40 blokes we currently have on our list.

There it is in a nutshell. A brand new list manager, 4 new assistants who haven't started yet, a coach under siege, a massive debt and a new president.
Can someone take a breath, formulate a strategy, fix the back of house before we throw money at any footballer who is available at a price without jeopardising our ability to recruit in the future. We have no second or third round picks as it stands, a gem in pick 4 which we will lose as well as paying overs for these players mentioned.
We do need run & carry, unsure we need $800K worth in one player with foot issues whose own club cannot believe he's worth that price.
Offer part of it to Hall and target Gaff this year if we have to blow a million whilst our players are rumbling about the state of the club and the coach.

Yep I think the only way we are going to land a big FA is if we really go hard… and considering our cap space it should be happening.

In hindsight we should have gone much harder for Fyfe / Martin types instead of trying to slightly edge our competitors.

No point paying 7-800 K to players like Lycett who would be borderline best 22.

I would love to somehow punt Dunstan off our list. Slow, poor kicking inside mid. The only problem is - PA have Boak, Wines and Ebert - all inside mids themselves and better versions.

Nth want both Polec and Gaff. The view is that Gaff may be leaning to Nth (they're probably offering more money than WC) and that he'll either stay at WC or go to Nth. The fact is, that Nth have not yet got him.

This is where our play is brilliant. Nth would have a maximum that they could pay both Gaff and Polec. I would bet that our new List Manager (a financial numbers man) could roughly extrapolate an accurate estimate of that number.

Nth would be utterly spewing. If they match us on Polec, they risk us coming in over the top on Gaff. If they don't want to risk Gaff, they have to give up on Polec.

It can only lower morale in a place that is hurting at present. And he isn't a gun,. He is good but not great. This seems like a desperate attempt to sign anyone with a name from another club. Ont get me wrong I am not saying Polec will not help but there are better options out there for that price.

I'm pretty sure that there aren't better options at the price who would be willing to play for St Kilda at the moment. Players usually have factors, other than just money, influencing their decision when changing clubs.
Our reported offer for Lycett was higher than Port's and yet it's clear he'll play for either WC or Port, not us. We have more cap space than North and yet they're in front in respect of Kelly for next year because family ties are involved. It appears Gaff has ceased to consider any offers from us at all.
In addition we're clearly looking to trade out players on middle rung salaries.
Doubtless more names will appear during the trade period but at the moment the trade price is a lot more relevant than the salary.

Agree with most of what you said and the most important point you made was that more names will appear. It's early doors now and we are going hard at a good not elite player. I would go hard at an elite player and try to give them a god father offer. But you are correct in saying we are not a destination club at present and I doubt we will be with Richo in charge. 2019 will be another suffer thru it year I feel

Not bad as far as theories go but it is a very risky strategy; particularly if he is not our main target.

Yeah I'm with you. IMO Lycett is only a bit better than what we already have & as mach as Polec would be a handy pick up 800 grand seems pretty steep but I suppose it's supply & demand & if we don't offer that sort of coin we miss out

What a lot of people don't realise, is that most players DON'T WANT to come to the Saints....and if one did, it would have to be big money....thus the $800k
I think Polec is actually a pretty good player. Is he worth $800k? most probably not, but remember, the Saints need to pay a premium for anyone to go there....so $800k is fair enough.
As long as we don't give away pick 4, I'm fine with this.

Oh and by the way - THANK GOD we didn't get Lycett. IMO he's not that much better than what we currently have, and would have been a shocking waste of money!
