Good points ! Particularly re: Seb RossBernard Shakey wrote:Roo and Joey easy targets.bassoon wrote:The biggest concern is the number of players that have gone back in their development, and others who are just treading water.
Those who have gone back.
Riewoldt
Montanna
Steven
Hickey
Weller
McCartin
Wright
McKenzie
Those who have treaded water.
Acres
Dunstan
Billings
Newnes
Lonie
Sinclair
Longer
Those who have improved
Maybe Roberton
Maybe Gresham
Its a scary scenario.
Most of the players mentioned were players we thought would improve. They haven't.
When the club does their review at the end of the year, this is what they need to do.
Jack Steven is a concern - yes, he's being tagged, but wasn't Steele, and Stevens suppose to spread the load?
No, its not happening.
Steven, Hickey, Weller and McCartin have all carried injuries.
Billings, Sinclair, Longer and probably Acres have improved dramatically.
Robbo and Gresh have treaded water.
Have you not noticed Seb Ross? He will win our B&F by a mile!
Our Moneyball type rebuild has failed.

That Seb Ross is going to win our B&F speaks volumes in itself.
At how many other clubs would he be the frontrunner?

Re: Our Moneyball type rebuild has failed.
The issue is culture. I believe their has been a MEGA change for good since even 15 years ago. However...We lack a strong culture. Some would say how can I know from my lounge chair? Culture is easily revealed in the attitudes of the playing group not by being so close you smell their breath.
In 1999 Geelong launched a system wide change from rewarding talent (like us they had 6 players getting 50% of the salary) and began rewarding values...meaning getting a win was not rewarded but how you played your part was...values over talent.
Cook and Costa actually got a character building course and the players and all staff studied about humility, honesty, integrity, compassion, discretion, thorougness, contentment, responsibility,self-control, alertness, diligence, endurance, patience....a total of 49 characteristics were taught over 12 months.
This is a fact. I know the prpgram they used I have it. I heard a senior player tell me the whole story face to face and I discussed it with him over a few years worth of catching up.
Of course they aren't saints but the staff the club and players reformed their thinking and the culture shifted.
From that point onward the belief was engrained that they could endure and rise above any adversity together and succeed. When they ended their gf run everyone thought it was over but they quickly had a reboot (its the character called resilience) and keep having a crack.
Blame the players, the coach or whoever...until we change as a club. Change our culture. We will remain the same.
