Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Didn't see him but am super happy with what he's doing. He bring ideas on the structures that Collingwood used to get where they did. He had redeveloped the footy team to have structures that while not competing in scale with the Pies at least don't leave a chasm.
Our VFL team has been as close to amalgamated as you get with out being a stand alone, he has the academy to oversee the development, a recruiting team with more direction.
He is unfortunately being forced to ride the failings of the past. Poor recruiting and development are his issues to patch up. He's not a magician but who is.

Highlighted that we've been in (rebuild) mode since the start of last year. Was pressed re Dal and stressed the need to keep players around to help the young players coming thru. Nothing said that we haven't heard before or that we don't expect given where we are right now.
And fwiw, I agree completely with what tony74 wrote above.

Evolving the list since round 1 last yearTeflon wrote:what did he say?tony74 wrote:Anyone who doesn't think Scott is the right coach for our club just watch the interview on 360 tonight. He is the one to take us forward.
Introduced more debutants than any other team this year
Didn't select Lee, Murdoch or Saunders because of bye in VFL and they were scheduled for a rest
Will sacrifice wins to evolve list/introduce new players and keep salary cap in check
Reiterated Dal Santo is contracted and wants to stay
Another four (I think) kids will debut throughout the year
Lee needs to build his body for AFL

tks for that- sounds a little more reasonable.
4 more debutants is good news to me.

Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
He didn't mention which players will debut but his clear message throughout the interview was that he has and will continue to introduce young players.
Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Cheap terminology from me. f***ed if I really know what he could say that wouldn't / couldn't be construed that way. We all know we're in the s***, he's not in a position to say it.Teflon wrote:Tks Karnaby...coach sspeak doesnt fill me with confidence..

Most of it was cliche, but enjoyed hearing about why some kids didn't get in due to a RDO...
I needed to hear that.
If some guys are playing to prevent a Ball or a Trengove injury riddled beginning, I'm comfortable with that.

I keep saying, and nobody keeps listening, Milne was slow to start last season too, but had a fine one in the end.
I don't see a reason to drop Milne.

Its amazing what a coach can spin and we accept it. not having a go at you SK but this is what happens when we hear stuff and it isnt questioned because the people interveiwing wouldnt and shouldnt be expected to know this but didnt Sandy have a bye just 2 weeks ago. Im unsure they needed to rest for 2 out of 3 games. Sounds like they werent in good enough form or he just didnt want to play them last week.

We need to keep our nerve, keep the club stable (no calls for sackings) and try to enjoy watching our kids evolve.Old Mate wrote:Evolving the list since round 1 last year

Also like the fact that four more kids will debut. Fits in with the above philosophy and also gives the kids who haven't debuted something to work towards.

Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Agree wih Tony74. Saw the interview. What stands out is that SW understands the need for senior guys to be around the young guys to guide them as well as the need to manage the young guys carefully in terms of game time. Given these two facets, we are not going to see masses of kids tipped into the team together, they will be rotated through and slowly built up. Expect this to be a pattern for another 18 months with kids slowly increasing the number of consecutive games they can get through.
He also mentioned a senior core of "half a dozen" players that we need over the next year or so to be guiding the kids- interested to know who they are.

Didnt hear one word of it. Was going by the statement below from old mate.
Didn't select Lee, Murdoch or Saunders because of bye in VFL and they were scheduled for a rest
If he said that then surely that is rubbish.

I have read the three pages
I have taken all the suggestions and criticisms
applied them to the Melbourne FC
and the result is a tanking investigation
no matter, who is in charge, or what was done
there is no exact right or wrong way and Im not sure appeasing fans is paramount & I think the current approach is going ok

Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
it is a fine line beteen rebuilding and tanking ... lok at the game just gone its obvious we wanted to win and tried to win .. but the diferance is the game into the kids is more important than the win ... with the dee's they wanted to lose there were moves made during the game to make them lose and losing to secure the draft pick was more important than the win ... ... there is a differance .. for one the results come second to the effort and the learning to the other the result is paramount to the club in securing a draft pick ... one is growing a team for the future the other is trying to work the system to get a team for the futuresunsaint wrote:I have read the three pages

Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
The guy is in a tough position.
He knows we need to rebuild and play kids - but he also wants to win his 6-8 games for the year to keep his job.
Not really an awesome position to be in for anyone.
If we had a big name (say Paul Roos) - hed just go straight into 100% rebuild and wouldnt give a stuff if we only won 2-4 games this year and next.
His eyes would be firmly on 2015/16.
Difficult for someone like Scott to do that.
I hope the fans and the Board come out and support him and just face the reality of where were at and start looking forward to 2015/16 build towards it.

Re: Watters needs to stop kidding himself
Senior 6 for 2014
1. Roo
2. NDS
3. Joey
4. Dempster
5. Gwilt
6. Gilbo/or/Fisher
I think thats it.
Milney, Kosi, Blake, Lenny and CJ will all retire.
We will trade one/keep one of Fisher and Gilbo.
