Whenever there is a loss, it's always blamed on the umpires, but not the 22 players on the field.

Umpiring decisions might affect the game, but the only thing which determined the result tonight were the 44 players on the field.
Short memory there mate, 2009 GF ring a bell, when a goal is PAID when it hit the bloody post..... We were 5 points down when the siren went, so yes the umpires can change how a game is played out.

On the topic of umpires as cheats...

I teach at a small University in the US, and yet its football players were involved in a cheating scandal. And it is all related to betting on football.

I think it is a travesty to amalgamate sport and betting - no disrespect to our current sponsor; it's just my opinion.

Bringing betting into any sport means it is POSSIBLE for anyone; anyone; to become involved in cheating, alas. Anyone - in our sport - from a boundary line umpire who might call a ball "out of bounds" at a bad moment to a bootstrapper who might share inside info about positional changes.

We've already seen some players from other teams be suspended and fined for sharing team info... it's a potential trap for every player - you inoccuously say 'so I've been practicing my snapshots unless I ever get a go in the forward line' to your second cousin, and they tell everyone in the world, and you end up suspended.

BTW if Hawthorn want to blame someone for their loss, there's that guy (Schoenmakers) who dropped the simple chest mark at full back which ended up being a ball up.

Or they could blame the guy (Stratton) who went up as third man in the ruck and put it straight down the throat of Bail.

And how that wasn't a free against Tarrant for deliberate I don't know.

No.

They simply got caught up in the 'momentum swing'.

It's a huge issue with umpiring in our game. Umpires feel the momentum, feel the crowd riding it, and start to umpire with the perceived flow of the game.

It's infuriating. And it's exactly what happened last night.

It s***s me how supporters use this type of logic when dissecting footy.

For players, and coaches, and everyone involved it's imperative to have a 'only worry about what we can can control' attitude to everything about the game.
For a player or coach to worry about umpires is ridiculous and a complete waste of time. They should only ever be focussing on their own actions and what they can do differently.

But for fans to blame umpires and get frustrated by them, is completely reasonable. And in plenty of cases, it's actually correct.

Fans have no control over anything. Whether they blame mistakes their players made, or the umpires, is exactly the same thing.

Fans are expressing opinions over something that happened, that does not involve them at all.

So it can be completely correct to say that an umpire changed the result of a game with an error, and it's as understandable for a fan to get just as angry at that as they do with any other thing that happens during a match.

Umpires should have zero influence on a game. Everything that happens should be the result of the players. The umpire is only there to ensure the rules are adhered to. Any decision paid or not paid, should be as a result of a players' action outside of the rules.

The umpires were patheticly unprofessional last night when the pressure was on late. They got caught up in the momentum and tipped the scales in Collingwood's favour.

Last night, there's no doubt at all that the umpires influenced that game. Without being Nostradamus, it's hard to tell whether or not they altered the result exactly, but they certainly made life far more difficult for Hawthorn to do their job.

I reckon the umps favored the Hawks in the 1st 3 qtrs but def not the last.

I do buy into umpires going with momentum.

The temptation for them to cheat with betting everywhere is huge. Saying that I'd be amazed if any AFL umpire has been involved. yet.

You really have no idea. The umpires pay them as they see them. I was at the game and they missed a few for both sides as they do every week. Sat around plenty of Pies and Hawks fans and no one seemed worried by the umpires. Now let me guess. You wanted the Hawks to win. Of course that wouldnt cloud your judgement as it seems it never has in the past. Great game last night and the better side lost not because of umpires but because they couldnt put the pies away. I wish the Hawks had of won but I didnt walk away and think the umpires effected the result. Paupulo's dinky little crap kick may have though.

We'll know on Wednesday whether the AFL think they did a good job or not. That's when the GF umpires are announced !!

What the AFL consider a good umpiring job differs vastly from what most footy followers consider good umpiring!

Agree. Certain to be at the Saints next year through a trade. We need more blokes who kick it straight to the opposition. He'll be at home with Sam, Jack and Jarryn.

Plugger the umpires made mistakes when the heat was on.

I don't consider that performing very well.

Nothing hurts more than seeing the Filth get up and win a close one! Umpires seemed to be playing to the crowd, as usual.

They made mistakes all night and they will always make mistakes. They made less than average umpires would make. And by the way you may be saying a decision was wrong when it was actually right.

By the way I thought Cloke, Swan, Mitchell and Ball were the best 4 players last night. And I thought they all performed very well and I thought they all made mistakes.

Another atrocious decision was the 50m penalty for Cloke's first goal in the first quarter.

Umpire calls out once for the man on the mark to move back (he doesn't hear because of the crowd noise)
Umpire calls out twice for the man on the mark to move back (he doesn't hear because of the crowd noise)
Umpire calls out a third time for the man on the mark to move back (he doesn't hear because of the crowd noise)
So that's a 50 metre penalty.

Did it ever occur to the over-officious t#rd to move 5m closer and into the man on the marks vision so he could actually hear?
Kicking from outside 50 on the boundary lne was never going to be a goal for Cloke.
So you could argue that cr@p decision alone (apart from all the ones in the last qtr) cost Hawthorn the game.

The worst decision last night was that holding the ball decision against Papalo (sorry about the spelling).
Two guys fight for the ball, he stands up and get's pinged, BS.
In the context of the game, that should have been a ball up.
Look, Hawks may not have still won the game, but the filth wouldn't have got it out so easily.

The Hawks missed three or four sitters that would've sealed the game and also coughed up some easy ones at the other end. They were easily the better side but failed to ice the game.

You can't blame umpires for Hawthorn's misery - they only have themselves to blame.

Two things stood out to me in the last quater. Bateman got heaps of it, but butchered it under pressure. And when the heat was on the umpires did the same. Don't care how they umpired for the first 3 quarters, when the pressure was on, and the game was in the balance, they made some horrible decisions that all tendered to go one way.

By the way, did anyone else notice a couple of Pies players pull out when the pressure was on? Reminded me of a couple of them in the last quarter of GF1 last year.

If they lose last years Grand Final HO would never live it down. Daisy's marking attempt last night was also interesting

Absolutely agree, the crowd influences decisions which is incredibly frustrating. Most blatent sign of this was in the second quarter on the boundary line in front of 3 bays of filth supporters, both players had their backs to the ump meaning his vision was entirely obscured but he paid it based on guesswork as crowd was feral. I hate how the filth has it all their way, then boo for a minute after one thing goes against them. Ferals...

After the 10 minute mark of the last quarter the umpires as well as the Hawks lost the plot.

There was two deliberate out of bounds which should have been paid against the pies and the Hodge high tackle was shockin.

The filth had two dubious holding the balls go their way and a couple missed for Hawks in the last quarter. Hawks deserved better, they were first to the ball in those 50 50 contests all night, but missed chances cost them - plus they panicked and blazed away in the last quarter. I'd be dirty if I barracked for Hawthorn, but I guess I can take solace in the fact that Geelong are going to smash the Pies next week based on current form. I'm beginning to realise I hate Collingwood almost as much as I love the Sainters and thats a lot!

That was a shocker for a final. The bit I loved was when Maxwell went to elbow but missed and fell over and got a free for it????
