The press and the footy world wanted a story. They sniffed one and chased it.
The further it went, the clearer it became that there was no story.
The club's initial stance gave the 'story' legs and the footy world the ammo they needed to press on with the 'nasty Saints vs. poor little girl' story.
The second approach took the wind out of it's sails. Sadly for Ricky Nixon though, it seems to have created an opening for him and for her to do what appears to come naturally.

Tonight 60 Minutes will name and show the girl's face despite the media protecting her identity because she is a minor.
She has been staying at a Southgate hotel this weekend and it is understood security has been hired to protect her.
The program has paid a five figure sum for the interview.

The club's initial stance was the only viable stance. To do nothing would have hung three players who did nothing wrong out to dry. And in the absence of government stepping in to haul a miscreant minor under its wing or without parents stepping up to the plate or without media willing to corroborate the 'facts' it was reporting, the club had little alternative other than to whack the little twerp.Johnny Member wrote:The whole thing was clearly a PR thing.SainterK wrote:That makes no sense, they changed for a more soft reproach, because she lied?Eastern wrote:Not sure about the accuracy of those reports. I am glad they had the gumption.
There seems to be a misconception among people that the media can be controlled or 'managed'.
Unless you own it, you're a potential victim of it.
It's ever been thus.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Poor Dorksley, his little piece of exploitation has been bought by someone else with a bigger bank balance.
Will have to set up some more entrapment episodes to show the hard hitting investigative journalist he is.

Politicly coorrect or not, at least he stood up for the players and called her out for what she was. A liar and that we had to chase thelegal approach to try to get to the truth.fingers wrote:He is.Eastern wrote:What that proved to me;

Eddie or kennet would have stood up for their players, and at least our club had someone do that for our club - although chasing the case against her for 15 years was too strong.

Oh no, I was always cautious and doubted the authenticity of her pregnancy, then I saw the pregnancy photo's (that were pretty convincing I must say) and wondered if there was any truth to it.satchmo wrote:That was the whole point of the exercise. I only have opinion on that one.SainterK wrote:

I noticed a change in the tone of the media towards the Saints last year.
Oddly, it coincided with some strange events. At the time I thought it was obvious, but it's easy to shoot these things down as paranoia.

Unfortunately for the people that took great delight in orchestrating these events, they left a couple of loose ends.

My opinion, is that the second they hired the PR expert, the whole situation changed in the club's favour.SainterK wrote:The clubs initial stance was harsh, but surely they could of softened it without paying for her accomodation?Johnny Member wrote:The whole thing was clearly a PR thing.SainterK wrote:That makes no sense, they changed for a more soft reproach, because she lied?Eastern wrote:Not sure about the accuracy of those reports. Paying for her accomodation makes us look like we care. It removes one entire element of the 'story' (ie. the club are a pack of arseholes that flick women to the curb).
They were always in the right (or more to the point hadn't done anything wrong). But that didn't matter.
Once the papers found that there was no actual story, they went chasing other avenues.
We gave them that avenue with our initial responses. We gave them the 'big bad club beating up on a poor little girl' angle.
Once we played nice, the whole thing disappeared pretty much. There was simply nothing to flame the club about anymore.
Now that this story has aired, the club can sit back and say 'yeah, it's sad but we only ever really cared for the welfare of the girl blah blah blah' and look like nice guys.
