Leading into 2021, off a very good 2020, what Coffield did do was to attempt to make more advantage of his 191cm and his marking abilities - so he bulked up

What happened from there was that Rattan called him in and told him his legs were the asset, that he should focus on leg speed and rebound, not so much contesting overhead and holding position in those overhead contests

It was a challenge Coffield accepted hence his form recovery over the latter half of 2021 and what he was showing in 2022 pre-season until doing an ACL and missing 12 months

He was burning the track up pre-season 2022 until the ACL injury

Then the further leg injuries when lifting loads (so no ACL problem) so a restricted 2023

Keep an eye on the injury time to playing

It may be he gets some minutes earlier than that

But they are invested into him so he will not be rushed

An interesting player, I think he was a ruckman at the Bulldogs before Carlton turned him into a tall defender. Was looking quite good, at times last year, but falling out of favour. Depth as a ruck / KPD. Possibly better value than Highmore & Adams for versatility.

I agree he may be a scapegoat for Carlton as their issues are their running half backs (injuries) and mid to small forwards (lack of quality and speed).

No good comparing a young HBF like Bergman to a Gresham or Coff type. The form of a couple of years ago means nothing other than showing that players were of a certain standard- Gresh has skills, bit is clearly slower than pre injuries and won't get any better, while Coff hasn't been on the field for a couple off years and may not return this season. Talk of getting a Bergman or TDK is a long term view- strong young players free of injury while about to be in their prime.

If TDK is nearing his prime, its best he stay at Carlton for 2 more years, because at the moment he looks and plays like an 18 year old and Heath looks every bit as capable. Give him 47 games and see how they compare. I'm not sure he would be any more effective than Hayes, who would be on a Mars Bar and a Coke just like Heath.

Bergman’s early months at the Power coincided with the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and he has battled homesickness at times during his four seasons in South Australia, but is playing career-best football since moving into the back line.

His girlfriend relocated from Melbourne to live with him in Adelaide, and he is happy at the club, where he has formed bonds with Horne-Francis and Xavier Duursma as Port Adelaide storm to the top of the AFL ladder. The Power have been involved in a number of list moves where the pull from home was a factor, including their recruitment of Horne-Francis and Junior Rioli, plus Karl Amon’s free-agency departure for Hawthorn.

Bergman went forward against Richmond and played a cameo in the centre in the last quarter of Port’s win over Hawthorn but has predominantly become a defender, after spending the pre-season training as a wingman. That versatility is part of why he has such wide appeal, with clubs picturing him in various roles.

He is averaging a career-most 2.2 intercept marks, which ranks second behind Aliir Aliir at the Power and ninth among general defenders in the competition. Port Adelaide have scored more points (63) from Bergman’s intercepts than any other player.

The Age reported in February that the Saints were keen to target bayside talent in the draft, but also in trade and free agency, as part of a list strategy that mirrored the Cats’ successful approach. The Dragons’ under-18 Talent League team and VFL club Sandringham Zebras are based at St Kilda’s Moorabbin home, and the Saints’ chief executive Simon Lethlean said they had “strong relationships” with them.

Cameron finished with an equal-season-low 10 disposals in Geelong’s 38-point loss, as well as only one goal and one mark, failing to take a grab inside 50 for the first time in 2023.

A good article on Bergman Saynta, you could be mistaken to believe it was written by a Power supporter. In any event it gives another perspective into his strengths, but I still dont see him as a list need or a player we should be chasing. If our clubs List Management group cant see that we desparately need top end midfielders then we should all give up our interest. WE NEED ELITE MIDFIELDERS - I cant say it any louder!

The thread started with the idea of using our compensation received from Gresham, to pick up Bergman. Thats all well and good but losing Gresham doesnt actually improve our midfield it weakens it! It is also evident a club will have to make Gresham a massive offer $$$ for us to get a 1st round compensation. What happens when our compensation for Gresham is only a 2nd rounder - do we give up our only 1st round pick to get Bergman? The minimum that Port will want for Bergman is a 1st round pick and possibly more, is he really worth that to a club that has no real need for a like player.

It would seem that SOS and the club have made Gresham an offer and he is now looking at other offers. Is he worth the 800k per year he was making absolutely not and he also has to understand that he is probably not in our top 10 players either and should be paid accordingly. The club needs to be careful not to force Gresham out and then not hold sufficient draft equity to chase others. Its a balancing act, but for me the need to add Bergman to our list is not. Again we need balanced midfielders as our immediate priority!

Its tough doing player comparisons.
Gresham has had 1 very good year, led our dismal goal kicking one year and has averaged a goal a game over his career.

His height & weight are almost the same as Stephen Milne, yet there's no comparison.

Not just in lack of goals or injuries...but the biggest knocks on Gresham are his lack of fierceness.
I rarely see a 1% ( his career stats are below avg), he has very low contested possessions...which is odd for a forward who should be consistently fighting for marks & possessions. His marking % is actually quite high but not in contests.

He has burst speed, his footy brain puts him in the right spot more often than not but his shocking disposal efficiency gives the ball away a lot. He is below average for his career in kicking & handball effectiveness.

He is not someone I'd give away, he adds good value. But if we are being real serious, I dont see him going all out to lay it on the line for the ball, the game or the team. Maybe injuries have made him self protective? That's fair.
His marks are up as are his tackles this year. The tackling has been valuable!

But I believe this key thing ( lack of ferocity) makes him stand out as someone RTB would let walk away from the club if he had a player who would drive, dig, leap and move with desperate abandon. That kinda player tweaks RTB's nips. I've seen Hill dive that many times this year to block kicks...I heard RTB LOVES Hill.

If he's a restricted free agent then if a club makes an offer to him he can take it and we get compensation.

The only way we would trade him is if we match the offer and then force a trade, however that is very unlikely to happen, pretty sure Cameron at GWS was the only time it happened because they were willing to pay that contract and they knew he was worth more than just a first rounder.

Most likely we will get a second round pick for Gresham as compensation, or he will find that his value isnt that good and he will just stay. There is no way we will get a first round pick as compensation for him.

On his current form he is worth very little.
