Miles off Geelong in a million different ways.
50% can be fixed, 50% is the system which you can’t win against unless part of it is changed.
- free agency rules
- location
- draft rules
Things that can be fixed
- drafting correct sized players that have a crack (no more flankers and midfield midgets)
- admin
- coaches
- development
- concentrating 100% on winning a flag and not being a so called community beacon.

Imagine where we’d be if in 2007 we got gifted Tom Hawkins.
Huge difference to our list just with one player.

Re: How good are Geelong and how far away are we .
Coaches and development must be the 2 biggest pillars ever.
Look at Stengle. Drunk driving, lost to footy 2 yrs ago, AA this year.
Of course it's his talent and skill that's evident- but the environment, culture, support he was given, made him feel valued, needed, a part of a 'family', and made him want to be the best he could be.
Our club thinks it can create a similar environment, nurturing etc, but we've failed time and time again to develop talent.
I don't think Bassatt, and any review, will ever identify exactly where we are lacking, and more importantly, it won't know how to rebuild the culture to close the huge gap between us and the culture at Swans, Cats, Tigers.
Look at the Pies- they've had issues with Eddie Maguire, then Buckley's disconnect (dumping Treloar, etc)
Instead of being fractured for years, like we would be, they turned it around in 12 months.
We've never done that.

A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

How good are Scott, McCrea, Longmire, Longmuir compared to Brett Ratten as coaches?

Re: How good are Geelong and how far away are we .
Just on your comment Wellard re Stengle being picked for AA this year, it reminded me of Dan Butler’s brilliant year in 2020.
The selectors in 2020 only had Liam Ryan as the sole specialist small forward in the All Australian team in 2020
I heard a few commentators crap on that you need to show a couple of outstanding years in a row before you should make the final cut…How the fk did Tyson qualify?
Geelong didn’t have enough players in the final squad in 2022 (and if it wasn’t spew worthy enough that Hawkins got to be awarded as the captain) the selectors had to also give Tyson the nod and make Dan and all Saints fans feel even worse….Joey is one of them….

Woe is us!
Could have had Jack Riewoldt if we’d tried!
Losin 2 first rounders in 09 the one we gave for Lovett and the one we should have got for Luke Ball was probably as big a c**k up as Hill and Hannebery!
Robertson’s health situation and Steven’s self inflicted troubles or helpful either!
Bad luck and bad management have both played a huge part!
Hopefully onwards and upwards from here.

Re: How good are Geelong and how far away are we .
Credit to Geelong and what they have acheived this year - they were far and away the best side throughout the year. Lets hope our club can emulate some of the things Geelong and the other recent sucessful clubs have done. Its starts with administrative stability and Finnis, Bassatt & previously Peter Summers have laid the foundations. Hopefully that flows onto the onfield sustained stability required to acheive similair results.
Look at Geelong last year after getting flogged in the prelim - half their supporter base were calling for Scott to be sacked. Scott and
the Geelong board stuck fat, made some changes to their game plan, added more player depth and got the results.
As much as we now criticise the clubs decision in bringing in a player like Hill, look at the excitement and membership that trade period generated. Granted the shine has been dulled by a lack of onfield growth, but to the clubs credit they have owned that and now are on the precipice of making some very tough calls. Sucessful clubs like Geelong & Richmond have done that over the years which has given them a later leg up.
Geelong gave up Tim Kelly and as a result got Sam De Koning and a 2020 1st pick used on Jeremy Cameron.

Re: How good are Geelong and how far away are we .
I think we can agree Geelong is a antique club and a unique situation.
It is very favorable.
When we were growing up, Geelong wasn’t too flash, as a place and the club wasn’t that successful … three flags in 70 years, 1937-2007
Now people wanna go there.

As much as they s*** me, they are an impressive club.
So many of their gambles pay off and there is no end of players who want to go there.
We were a destination club for about 5 mins...and now back to overpaying to attract any attention.
Let's hope the report/inquiry actually does a real job this time.

Those who prosecute the Geelong model of recycled player over going to the draft have zero understanding of where St Kilda sits in football pecking ordersshanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sun 25 Sep 2022 1:07amYup
That is all she sung...tonight, anyway.
Dunno how many over 30s they have, or about to be 30, but it is a lot...
But mostly, they are not jaded..they are singing in the choir as loudly as they can.
Ya wonder, if Paddy Ryder had been at Geelong...they would win the bloody Super Bowl.
We are not a successful club
We have a history of failure
We have ZERO pulling power
We don’t have Geelongs location aspects to showcase
And no Cotton On to employ player wives on 250k salaries
We’ve tried recycled - we got rejects
Clubs like ours must hit the draft
Problem is…our player development means they stall ..

Nah, it’s all down to one pretty good player they got 15 years ago…

How smart was Cats coach changing their game plan? Recognising that they needed to play quicker attacking footy?
Our guy??
Membrey to backline late in quarter
Forwards who don’t lead
No transition plan
Rely on smalls to get cheapies out the back

Or getting the best player in the AFL 4 years ago and the bloke they rate the best in the AFL a couple of years ago.
Massive advantage

Didn’t know we weren’t eligible for father/son recruits.
Is it only Geelong?
