we traded with the hawks two draft picks (24 and 59) for pick 19 (my memory must be playing tricks - i thought the picks for dunstan and acres were 17 and 18 but it seems it was 18 and 19 according to wiki).
that was a separate trade to mcevoy for savage and pick 18.
so if we hadn't traded mcevoy we would've had only pick 19 - and unless the hawks had taken dunstan with 18 we would have taken him at 19 and passed on acres. ergo we got acres and savage as a result of the mcevoy trade.

Even if we had made Dunstan an offer ... IF we have a free agent coming in (lick your lips at that prospect) and Dunstan went out as an unrestricted free agent ... then there would be zero compensation for Dunstan to us ... as we had the free agent come in.

No offer helps any club get him - even as a rookie.

Good on him if helps them to finals. I don't see how Dunstan can be a premiership player, we need to keep improving our list and turning over those who aren't- especially after 6 or 7 mediocre years!

the mcevoy pick actually allowed us to get acres, not dunstan. we picked them at 17 and 18. hence if we had not done the trade we would have selected only one. we selected dunny first, ergo, it was most likely acres who we would've passed on.
not that it makes much difference - even worse in fact given acres did less for the club and gave two fewer seasons.

Fair call. I don't mind whether Dunstan plays in the AFL or somewhere else - footy is probably all he knows so, good on him trying to extract a dollar somewhere else. But I don't see him as being part of a top 8 midfield - let alone a Premiership one. If he is indeed gone from Moorabbin - hallelujah.

The simple fact is that he's very much a remnant - along with Ross to a degree - of the massively underwhelming poor development of young talent in the Cho era. My God we were abominable. I get how a poor runner who's not got much speed is largely consigned to that outcome by twitch fibres in muscles. But, I still can't get my head around how a first round pick who came arrived as a poor kick; is still a poor kick. That speaks to me about work-rate and desire. There's an endless pool of resources at AFL level for players wanting to improve specific skills. Always revert to S Loewe - poor kick who made himself into a very reliable kick with Huddo's help. Mechanics can be fixed with work and desire. I don't see that with Dunstan. His one good skill is clearance extraction but the rest is mediocre to poor. We have to be better than that.

I think Dunstan's "poor kicking" ability is almost the biggest myth going around here atm. Totally overblown.

His career disposal efficiency is about 70% which is more than respectable and better than quite a few on our list.

Across all midfielders in the competition he would rank bottom five for foot skills. It's not going to change. That kind of disposal robs us from scoring and aids the opposition in scoring. We lose both ways. His disposal is a net negative most weeks

That sounds like a lot of anecdotes and not much data!

Compare him to one of your favs, Ross. They both average the exact amount of clangers over their career.

And here's an anecdote, we all saw Ross miss a goal from the goal square under little pressure this year!!
