Prestia came from the Gold Coast Suns where he was a very good player

played most of his games at the GC with a bloke called Ablett and a few others that took the heat, he was about 4th banana at the time he was there.

I don’t think that is correct, when Ablett missed the best part of two seasons, Prestia was the best midfielda at GC

Dunstan has had six years to develop, and he was in the VFL early last season

His tank, speed and Disposal limit him from being a quality player

So many ways of looking at a subjective topic, how would Dom or Prestia go in a bottom 4 side where they are the main focus of an opposition coach week in and week out, especially as players who are physically under developed and have less than 50-100 games of experience.

Luke Dunstan has no excuses though in 2020 so lets have this discussion in one to two years so we are comparing apples with apples.
Prestia is a bona fide gun player.
He'd be fine in any side.

Finished 2nd in the GC 2013 B and F and then 3rd in 2014. Aged 21 and 22. Now 27 and at his peak.

Sheed just finished 8th in the Eagles B and F.

I think if we want to get up the top end of the ladder then We need upgrades on the likes of Newnes and Dunstall. No offence to either player. Just reality.

So hopefullly Bytel can be an upgrade.

Wouldn’t mind having Dunstall, it would justify trading Bruce

And obviously should have read Dunstan but as it does on my phone “auto-incorrect” (as I like to call it) changes Dunstan to Dunstall all the time. No idea why. Maybe Siri barracks for Hawthorn? Either way stop it is really petty!

Agreed!

But also - page 3 and I think the last reference to Bytel - whose name appears in the title of the topic was early on page 2

Any update on Jack?

In the three years Prestia has been at the Tiges he's finished 11th, 10th and 1st. And Prestia played a fair bit of 2019 without players who would normally take votes away from him too. It's taken Prestia a while to reach the top and he's been surrounded by once-in-a-generation players at the top of their game so I'm happy to see if Luke can take his game to the next level in 2020 while affording him the same luxury Prestia has for most of his AFL career. Obviously the luxury I speak of is being surrounded by multiple elite and A grade midfielders. No excuses in 2020 though.

Prestia spent 6 seasons at the Suns.

In 2013- aged 20 - he finished 2nd in the B and F. In one game he got 42 disposals and kicked 2 goals (against the Crows).
In 2014 - aged 21 - he finished 3rd in the B & F and got 13 Brownlow votes.

So no. He hasnt taken a long time to get to the top. Just ludicrous to think Dunny is in the same league.

Its like someone trying to tell us Anthony MIles is similar to Lenny Hayes.

Anthony Miles is probably better than Dunny.

It has taken Prestia a long while to win his first B&F. Most genuine elite types don't take anywhere as near that long.

And not arguing Luke is in the same league, if you read my post I'm pretty sure I only make the point Luke now has no excuses to take his game to a higher level. He doesn't have to be elite but he has to improve and that should see him hold his spot in the team. The reason he has no excuses is because of his age/game profile and also because he has never had better resources around him, ON and OFF the field. So he has an opportunity to extend his AFL career at St KIlda if he can show he's capable of further improvement.

I'm looking forward to seeing what he makes of the opportunity and so it will be one of the many interesting subplots to watch in 2020.

Luke Dunstan has played at the same reasonably good level since 2014...I expect him to keep getting his 20-22 midfield possessions per game on average.
He’s more or less the same player now that he was at 19... probably kicks less goals now, if anything.

He’ll be turning 25 this year... so I don’t expect any upside from here ... whatever gradual improvement he had in him would have already happened.
He’d be trying to improve each year, of course ... but he’s probably reached his ceiling.

Sadly, this is now true. I was really impressed by Dunstan in his first couple of years. The knock then, which I hoped was wrong, was that he wouldn't develop further, he was a boy in a man's body - hard as nails but limited.

He has no other string than being an inside mid.I cannot see Ross, Steele, Hannebery and Dunstan in the same side and see us improving. Depth at best.

WRONG....Players like Dunstan keep improving well into their 20's. He will be at his peak when he hits 28 and by then will be our best inside mid.

Why?

If a C Grade mid is our number 1 midfielder, who cannot spread due to lack of pace, cannot reach stoppages or defend due to having a woeful tank and is a horrible kick is ever our best midfielder... we are indeed s***!

Right now he’s behind
Ross
Hannebury
Steele
Gresham
Jones
Clark

So he’s 7th
Which is ok

If you read my post properly I said he will keep improving IMHO until he is at his peak at 28yo. That's when he will be our best inside mid. Not now/yet.
