So picking the best player is all bulls***. Why do they say it.

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Who says we're not picking the best player?

McCartin & Petracca are totally different types of players. Who can really say which one is better?

No, I believe pragmatism will be the major factor in who we select. The people making these decision are professionals. They can't afford to make irrational decisions. Their integrity and livelihoods depend on it.
Thats what I just said.

I dont believe they will go down the path of a) or b) - I was just saying they were logic traps for the uninitiated .

I wasn't aware that Sexpo was on as well; that's why they must be letting in the riff raff.

Those guys told me that Clinton Jones will be the number 1 draft pick.

Our coach said Petracca is the best player.

Fair enough.

However the recruiters may not see it that way and it is largely their call. They may think that by drafting PMcC we are taking the best player.

But back to Richo. Did he say it recently?

The only reason I ask is there seems to be a view that things have changed. That CP may have displayed some chinks or may have some injury concerns.

Because he may well be the best player in terms of pure skill but there's a lot that goes in to being the best player overall.

And it may be that the coach no longer believes CP is the best.

Let's hope it's up to the guys paid to do it - the recruiters.

From a recent article,
"Rendell is firmly of the belief that coaching staff should never meddle in matters recruiting and points to former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas as summing it up best.

“I haven’t met a coach yet who can see talent. Grant Thomas had it right at St Kilda when he said to John Beveridge (recruiting boss at the time) you pick them and I’ll coach them. He didn’t want himself or any of his staff to see a video of any player because it could only lead to an ill-informed opinion.

“Grant Thomas said ‘if I start telling you who to pick I may as well get rid of you and do it myself’. Plenty have tried and ended up stuffing their clubs up.”

Oh right. Unfortunately in the real world of real people that know other real people, real people meet other people and talk about real things i.e. the draft.

But good one buttforbrains. Keep up the good work.

Really I don't actually think their logic is flawed. A good big man is much harder to come by. I'm really just worried that we really need to make every post a winner and he is higher risk higher reward than Petracca. Petracca will be showing a lot early and will be a pretty solid player with in a few years. We might win in 5 years time but we will be watching Melbourne win first.

This reminds me of 1986 when the Chernobyl Isotopes picked Pavel McCartinovski instead of Constantin Petraccakov and the whole place went into meltdown

Nisbett is flapping his gums downstairs:

1. They wanted to move Worsfold on after 2010 but did not pull the trigger.
2. The Hartlett's are a bad family
3. Brad Smith would have been better than Pods.
4. Adam Simpson is a quirky character.

The Age today breaks the news that Petracca tested poorly in his psychological tests.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/trading-an ... 1u8bh.html

Recruiters have to sit up and pay attention when that happens as it could mean all sorts of things. This was probably the major key in the decision. I would not be surprised to see Petracca dropping lower than pick 3.

Interesting from Phantom Draft guru Knightmare where he sees the last couple of years ranked together:
I like the top end more last year.

Martin and Boyd particularly I had streets ahead of the top guys this year.

To rank those guys based on who I felt they would be at the time of creating my power rankings each year they would fit something like:
Martin
Boyd
Petracca
Brayshaw
Heeney
Moore
Hogan
McCartin
Acres
McDonald
*then the next few from last year I generally regarded also as better than the next few from this year. But that's roughly based on pre-draft rankings where I would have had them all.

Intersting he had Acres in the top 10, but also had Pteracca and Brayshaw ahead of McCartin

Strange then that his 2014 Power Rankings have McCartin [3] way ahead of Petracca [18] and a little ahead of Brayshaw [6]. Maybe I've misunderstood your post.

Knightmare's 2014 draft power rankings:

-- Potential A-graders --

1. Peter Wright (VIC - KPF/Ruck)

2. Sam Durdin (SA - KPP)

3. Patrick McCartin (VIC - KPF)

4. Darcy Moore (Coll - F/S – VIC – KPF/Ruck)

5. Hugh Goddard (VIC - KPF)

-- Potentially high level footballers --

6. Angus Brayshaw (VIC – Mid)

7. Alec Waterman (WCE – F/S - WA - Mid)

8. Jake Lever (VIC – Def/KPD)

9. Lachlan Weller (QLD – Mid)

10. Jarrod Pickett (WA – Util)

11. Tom Lamb (VIC – Fwd/KPF)

12. Kyle Langford (VIC –Fwd/Mid)

13. Brayden Maynard (VIC – Def/Mid)

14. Tyler Keitel (WA - KPF)

15. Matthew Hammelmann (Bris – Academy - QLD – KPF/KPD)

16. Clem Smith (WA - Util)

17. Mac Bower (SA – Fwd/Def)

18. Christian Petracca (VIC - Fwd)

If someone can show me stats where height is an issue I will listen. Facts suggest 193 is a perfect height for a marking forward. You would think we are recruiting Jodi Arnol and passing on Ablett Jnr.

No, we picked Jodi Arnol ahead of Peter Matera! I agree though, that McCartin's is not an issue. If it was as simple as that Rhys Stanley would be a gun.
