Re: Jaxons come on down
Some people are saying that we need a line-breaking midfielder over a bull like Steele. But maybe the coaches are considering running some of our HBF as wingman/mids.
Players like Roberton, Wright, DMac, White, Savage all seem to have a decent amount of pace & can all kick the ball.
Just a thought

Valid point and I was thinking the same thing.The_President wrote:Some people are saying that we need a line-breaking midfielder over a bull like Steele. But maybe the coaches are considering running some of our HBF as wingman/mids.

Roberton doesn't really have express pace.....Wright, DMac, Savage and Webster probably do -- but for one or two of them to successfully make this transition (into a line-breaking mid), they will need to consistently get to 20 plus possessions per game and probably need the extra stamina that goes along with being a mid.
As a comparison, Treloar is averaging 30 plus possessions per game. That's the type of running mid we need to go deep into the finals next year - and I'm not sure whether we would get that from any of the aforementioned (in fact I'm pretty sure we wont). The miracle could also happen with Freeman coming good?

What do you think Jack Steven does every week?

DMac has some toe. I see him as a key player in our line up. We have invested a fair bit in Freeman fingers crossed with him.

What I meant is ...The_President wrote:

Steven - who is Treloar's equal - needs support from at least another genuine mid with pace to balance things up for us. We have plenty of inside mids... maybe too many, and we may yet add another if Steele hobbles over to us. We need to close the gap between us and the best teams, and striking the right balance in the midfield is key to this.
I agree with CG, DMac may eventually transition into a line-breaking midfield player, who knows? He is definitely quick and is tracking well. Freeman is iffy.

Re: Jaxons come on down
I see Webster playing wing moving forward... I think White will be more suited to half back... its a gut feel from what I have seen.
Freeman is the Ace in the pack but D Mac and Savage to some extent will evolve in the mid field alongside Acres and Gresham who could be anything.

A new expression to me anyway, is balanced mid. I take it that it means good inside and outside. Who do we have thaat is a "balanced mid"?

Re: Jaxons come on down
I am a big fan of the way DMac goes about it. fast and Ferocious attack on the ball, good user of the ball and generally makes good decisions. The only thing I think is missing is I don't see him ever getting to the point of regularly amassing 30+ possessions a game. If he does get to that level he Will probably win a B&f.Con Gorozidis wrote:DMac has some toe. I see him as a key player in our line up. Re: Jaxons come on down
Agree but Isaac Smith only averages low 20s but he carries the ball fwd 10-20m for each possession. DMac only needs 15-20 disposals to do damage because he carries it fwd. No dinky little one-twos going backwards and sideways. I love the way DMac plays.Zed wrote:I am a big fan of the way DMac goes about it. fast and Ferocious attack on the ball, good user of the ball and generally makes good decisions. Re: Jaxons come on down
I think we all need to learn from the Seb Ross situation. McKenzie has played very few games. Still developing physically. We need to be a little more patient. Ross was averaging 15 possession last year, but this year it jumped to the high 20s. We've seen that over the years with guys like Hayes, Montagna, and Armitage. Mckenzie's breakout year may be 2017, but could be 2018. A bit to like about him so far.
Very few jump out of the gates like Gresham. He's the exception rather than the rule. It would be nice to snaffle another one like him in this year's draft

Re: Jaxons come on down
From what I've gathered we've got 17 on the books and have had preliminary discussions with 11 of them. Make that 12! Don't think we want any more than 3 at the end however.jaxons wrote:felix wrote:Jaxson the riddler has pissed off . Good on you Jaxson. How bout feeding the starving peasants another piece of bread.
Guys still 4 weeks until trade period starts so a lot of water to go under the bridge.
We are very active in discussions but as I said so many things don't come off.
If I mentioned all the players we are talking to and about this board would go into meltdown.
I will do my best to break news of our deals when they are as good as done on here first for you as I have done for last few years.
Stay tuned.

I remember being on here during the draft... I can't remember exact names but there were a number of forumites really hoping that Laverde would slide to our 21 pick and were disappointed when he went at 20CQ SAINT wrote:Probably on BF on the bombers page. Re: Jaxons come on down
You just get the feeling that the Saints will be big traders this year. It would not surprise me if we have no picks in the first round, that we again trade a pick from the next year, and trade in 3 players.
