Thoughts now???

IMO as it stands
Out
Gresham - Essendon
Pick 31 - Essendon
Coffield - Western Bulldogs
Billings - Carlton
Pick 13 (From Essendon)
Clark - North Melbourne
Bytel - Delisted
Adams - Delisted
Highmore - Delisted
Connolly - Delisted
Campbell - Retired
Peris - Delisted

In
Henry (pick 13)
Dow (Billings)
Sheil (Gresham plus pick Swap with Essendon)
2nd Round Pick - North (Pick 21)
2nd Rnd Pick - Bulldogs (pick 27)

Plus we use our own Pick 12 and Pick 49

Question Marks
Howard - offer two years or trade
McKenzie - one year or delist
Z Jones - one year or delist
Firstly, pick 13 comes from FA compensation, not from Essendon

Secondly there is ZERO chance we pay pick 13 for Henry.
He is worth a similar amount to Clark, i.e. former top ten pick whose career has been pretty average.
Freemantle are doing some early posturing with ambit claims for pick 12 but he is out of contract and has nominated us. There is no chance SOS gives them pick 12 or 13 if we end up with pick 13)

Hopefully we can get 13 and package it with 12 and end up with Gold Coast pick 4

I would also be very surprised/disappointed if we did a direct swap of Billings for Dow.

We will see

Don’t expect to ‘win’ every trade

I also think Billings has done a lot more than Dow to this point
But
Billings is older, has injury issues

Freo will definitely want a FRDP for Henry

If we can get him for a second it’d be a win, don’t think you win trades with Freo

Obviously, we want a lot - that doesn’t mean we get exactly what we want.

Btw
Pick 13 (which we hopefully get - that’d be another win) will be orchestrated by Gresham going to Essendon. It is FA Compo yes.

I'll be really disappointed in the club if we give away a FDRP for any player let alone Henry, don't get me wrong he's a player but I tend to think we pay Gresham what he wants if that is Freos firm postion as Gresh is a known quantity and is smaller price to pay if it allows us to keep our FRDPs and keep going to the national draft as our core strategy for player acquisition.

We have to stop trading like desperate prostitutes and stop overpaying and stick the long coarse.

We have a middle of the ladder team that shouldn't have to bottom out but will be competitive enough to build from this position provided we take the long road.

At 58 Lyon is not taking the long road - never has

I think we are more likely to trade a FRDP if we already have one

Be very nice to have two but effectively we would be trading out Gresham and in Henry which on last season is about right.

BTW
This draft is extremely weak - after pick 7/8 there isn’t many standout players
Apparently only about 40 odd will be drafted

Never limit yourself to one mechanism for player acquisition.

There are a number of ways to improve the list

Use EVERY avenue!!!

If you put all your eggs in the ND and those picks don’t turn out - it sets you back a decade (Ala 2013/14)

Use your DPs
Trade for specific targets
Take a rookie or two/ Cat A and B
Use the supplementary player period
Have a mid season selection

List builds are NEVER linear

agree in the diverse acquisition strategy however I would use the draft as the core of the strategy, never trade away FRDPs unless it's an offer too good to refuse, Henry is not in that category.

Also would expand on the amount of rookies taken in on a yearly basis and turn them over if they don't make the grade within 2 seasons. Midseason trade period will be mostly only beneficial to those in the premiership window.

So you expect a FRDP for Gresham - who really is a second

And not give a FRDP for Henry - who is also a second also

We ARE NOT going to win in trade scenarios

Best to hope for is a break even

And for Henry to turn out a player of equal standing or better at StK than Gresham would have been

I'd be disappointed if we gave pick 13 for Henry, an OOC who has nominated us.
Maybe 13 for Henry and pick 40

What will Carlton want for Dow?

Weren't you one of the people on this forum having a tantrum about Lyon playing too many of the kids in our last final?

Gresham > Henry
Henry = Coffield
Coffield (upside) > Billings

Shiel = Dow (upside)

Therefore imo.

Gresham worth end of first round
Henry and coffield worth start/mid second round
Billings worth mid second round
Shiel and dow worth a third round or later.

Gresham not as good as Henry this season, in fact Gresham was poor

Coffield hasn’t played for two years

Billings hardly played for two years

Clark was ok this year, prior to that missed a or a season and a half

Sheil’s best is better than any of them - but that was 5 years ago
Now he is not a shadow of that player. He’s probably about as good as Zak Jones now

That’s exactly my point, Henry and Gresham are identical types, so will it be an upgrade? seems pointless if we have to give away a FRDP.

Looking good at the trade table.

Paddy Dow - Ask Google
s Paddy Dow a good player?
Dow subsequently took home the VFL best-and-fairest award for his consistent efforts, as well as being named the team's Best Finals Player across their elimination and semi finals.
Another quality player coming for Sandringham

Shiel - Isnt in the best 8 midfielders for a team outside the 8. Add another year on the body of a player +30.
- He can replace Hannebury in the medical room. Either that or make friends with the other new recruit for Sandringham (Dow)

Henry Do we really need another winger? What role is he going to play? Ultimate replacement for Brad Hill. Had a good year (but only played 17 games), other than that has been in and out of Freo team.
Definately the best of the bunch so far listed.

Silvani ......

BMs list of the Mass Exodus seems to be very close so far, maybe Mr Magic should offer an apology?

Ross Lyon might want an apology for being told he is 58.

Born: 8 November 1966 (age 56 years), Reservoir.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

What for troll?
For speculating that the term ‘Mass Exodus’ was a highly emotive slap at the Club?
Given that 6-10 players leave or are exited every season and the same will apply to us this year?

Who says troll....pfft!

But back on topic, BM has clearly landed very close to the pin so maybe just a little peep over his brick wall to give a wink of acknowledgement?

Well if you’re suggesting it then there’s absolutely no chance troll.

Close to the mark?

The word is
Gresham - gone
Clark - gone
Billings- gone
Coffield - gone
Jones - gone

So far it looks like 2 out of 5, possibly 3.

And as magic said the criticism aimed at BM was not based on the prediction more that it was stated as fact and implied that there were issues at the club.

I def agree that BM’s repost of the news that someone else posted a week earlier (Tony I think but I can’t quite recall), is certainly in line with where all the media scuttlebutt has focused.
