Tough to argue with pick 8 for him.
Few directions we could go though.
Pick 8 for Gaff
Pick 7 & 8 for Pick 1 and a third round pick
Got to say that the last is a real tempter . ..using the Hawthorn pick to get an exceptional player from the start.
Probably it would be the best use of it, but he would want to be elite.

On AFL trade talk it says Saints have made enquiries but have not made an offer GwS say he has two years on contract and is a required player .

I'd be stoked if Tomlinson came to us. Thought he was best on ground in their last game. Also, of course, his father is a terrific dentist!

Don't get the need
We are battling for midfield class
We are a way off a flag
Get 2 gun mids who can use the ball and jag a goal from the draft

Odd balls isn't it. We need genuine midfield speed and class so we chase a tall defender. FMD.Teflon wrote:Don't get the need

Re: Barrett claiming Saints have tabled a deal for Tomlinson
Let's get into the speculation around Tomlinson.
If the mail is correct and we made an offer for Tomlinson, why would he want to come to us? And why would the Giants let him?
Money is the obvious answer but it is only part of it IMO. There needs to be something more than just dollars.
Here is what I think. Tomlinson is incredibly versatile. He can play back. He can play forward. A lot of peaple, including many on this forum, think he is a key defender because that is where the Giants slotted him.
But Tomlinson has played some amazing footy in the midfield. In fact his best on ground performance for the Giants in their prelimanry final loss was on the wing.
He was utterly unstoppable as a midfielder in the NEAFL. In fact in one game he amassed 48 possessions. This guy is a gun whereever he plays but........
I think the Saints have said to him, come to us and we will play you as a midfielder.
The Giants have never quite come to grips with Tomlinson. He's been in and out of the side. They've played him forward and back. Mainly back.
He's unlikely to ever be a regular part of the Giants midfield. There are too many stars there already.
So what if our strategy was to build him as the running midfielder we so desparately need? Tall midfielders are in vogue. Look at Bontempelli.
Could Tomlinson succeed as a midfielder? I have do doubts. If the speculation is correct, this could end up being a very big play on our part. The Giants might go for it if they want a better position in the draft. Fingers crossed. It would be a great trade for us.

Re: Barrett claiming Saints have tabled a deal for Tomlinson
I'm afraid I don't agree with much of that. The one point I do agree with is that he has at times been exceptional in the middle in the NEAFL. He has never commanded an automatic place in the Giants side, fundamentally because he's a slow thinker with ball in hand. He was last in for the recent game where he played well and plenty of Giants supporters still wanted him out for their next final where he was in the bottom few afield. If he plays for us it would be as backline depth.
There is no way he is worth either 7 or 8 or trading down those picks.
I agree with many others here that we simply have to start facing up to our lack of pace and skill in the midfield as THE priority. Not one element of the only asset we have in 7 and 8 should be directed away from that aim.

If they can't figure out we need midfielders in the modern game then we're cactus. Seriously these guys are meant to be experts...

Re: Barrett claiming Saints have tabled a deal for Tomlinson
How can people say it would be a great trade when we don't know what the trade is?
Surely it depends on the details.
For pick 43 it's a great deal.
For pick 7 a shocker.

91 games - average kicks 9.0, handballs 5.1 and marks 5.7 per game

What about Zac Williams? Wasn't there talk he was in our sights? He's quick, can play in the midfield, or provide run and carry from half back. Things we desperately need.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but our Jaxons may be a far more reliable source than Damien Barrett.

Tomlinson finished 16th in the GWS 2017 B & F.

Model, high jump athlete and girlfriend of Tomlinson.
Working with big fashion names.
She's training for 2018 Comm Games to be held on Gold Coast.
He ain't tearing a hole in her plans for his own career,
not when you see how she gushes over how much support he's giving her.
Read her story and tell me he'll be a Saint, go on.
2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

Re: Barrett claiming Saints have tabled a deal for Tomlinson
I don't care if Tomlinson comes as I don't think he is what we need so not a priority but he would none the less improve our side .
As for his partner it is an individual sport with very little funding so if he is offered a significantly better deal they move.
Was involved in Athletics for years and outside off perhaps her coach being in NSW there is in reason why she could not relocate with very little impact upon her aspirations. Our number one female high jumper trains by herself in Leongatha so it can be done.

She needs all of her girlfriends around, as well as being close to Mummy.
No way is she pulling up stumps in Sydney to start a new life in Melbourne.
Can't put a price on the support network.
