Yep has been teriffic! Didn't realise he ate a fees pies over the offseason and was always wondering why he wasn't busting down the door given his first game last year was very impressive.
Great kick as most have said, well balanced and at home with the pace of afl
Loved it when he was one on one with cripps ...he beat him to it and won the man on man contest and then the free..stick it up that traitor

Nice to see the young lad doing well. IF we can get Nathan Freeman right for next season, as well as picking up someone like Josh Kelly, then the future looks bright! OR one could say "the future looks WHITE?" (ouch!)

So why did he slip to pick 40?
There must have been some doubts by many clubs.

Re: White Impressive
In his first AFL game, which was a shootout in which Roo kicked 9, White impressed as a mid-sized defender because he played close, got his spoils in, did not lose his feet in the contest and his use of the ball was penetrating.
We have Gilbert, who is an automatic selection in our defensive structure, to return.
So the "spread" from the excellent Carlisle and the honest at least Brown is Gilbert, Roberton, Webster and now White.
This is the pressure, and improvement, we require to go further.

Re: White Impressive
Who knows, sp? So many good players slip down the rankings for a variety of reasons. Stuv slid into the mid 40's because he was a bottom ager. Other clubs, Collingwood in particular, wanted to see him have another year in the U/18's. Bevo pounced, thank goodness. Battle is another one who I was surprised got down to 39. I think he might be a hidden gem, another bottom ager. What about the Gresh? A few clubs will be kicking themselves over not picking him before pick 18.saintspremiers wrote:So why did he slip to pick 40?

White hid a hurdle in the preseason, when he returned in less than ideal condition. I think he's been made to work extra hard to regain the confidence and trust of the coaches and the group. From what I've seen in his three games, I believe there is some cause for excitement. So far, so good. And he appears to be a very proficient kick, which is something we desperately need.
I think you're pretty tough, don't I?

Re: White Impressive
He is unusually well composed in his attack on the ball for a 3-gamer and could become a great defender. I think that it's getting close for Monty to now call it a day. We have plenty in the back half to work with.

Re: White Impressive
To be fair to Montagna, who has had a wonderful career, he was consigned to our defensive structure to give precision to our defending, which was abjectly poor.
And he was performed exceptionally well.
Now with the likes of Webster and White emerging, we have good, rebounding defenders.
Plus we have Carlisle whose ball use in premier - including that kick under extreme pressure yesterday which was one of the very best disposals under extreme pressure I have seen. Absolutely brilliant.
The injuries to Gilbert and Fisher were also instrumental in Montagna "going back".
So, well done Montagna.
A class footballer.
It is of note that "Bevo" had him slotted as a small defender when his name was called out.

Re: White Impressive
That's true, Geary is currently one of the best small backs in the league and miles ahead of Rice. However I think it will be interesting to see if Rice can cut of the oppositions small forwards, as the inclusion of a player with his foot skills would be a massive advantage to our teamSaintPav wrote:Gears can still hold down the league's best forwards. The OtherThommo wrote:He ain't the only one asking the question, Pav.SaintPav wrote:and you call yourself a footy nut.footynut wrote:So... if white & Rice continue to develop, where does that leave our captain? I love Joey but did you see his face after the Port game. He was walking around the ground as though he knew this was the end. I think the decision has been made.Junction Oval wrote:He is unusually well composed in his attack on the ball for a 3-gamer and could become a great defender. We are very lucky if Brandon can play consistently like that when we have lost a couple of experienced backs recently.
Nothing better than a good Dad Joke.

Re: White Impressive
This is just an observation, and likely won't impact the fate of the footy world...but I have been scratching my head wondering why Brandon white didn't come into the side earlier? I've come to doubtvtge actual talent identification or even the ability to see things in players when our two brightest prospects this year have really come about by fluke and seemingly weren't seen earlier or if they were, knowone had the balls to act sooner...
1. Surely White's sure hands and excellent kicking and descison making were visible on the training track? Apparently he was punished internally for coming back a bit overweight and so lost his incumbent spot(I guess this is still speculation, nothing official ever announced)..but seriously 18rds of waiting!!!! Surely he's a standout in training drills etc...have we missed a possible 15 odd games getting pumped into him...might not matter, he could be a late season star but in terms of odds/averages...the more games we get into quality young players the better sooner, so there is a feeling of maybe a bit of lost time there
2. My second example slightly off thread was Sinclair's accidental hero revelation on the wing...again, I'm just concerned his obvious traits and skill set weren't tried there sooner...
Long story short...white looks the best instant impact young player since Dunstans first couple of months in 2014. Very exciting. The aside is we seem to have been very slow on the uptake from a coaching perspective on identifying afl standard talent from within our own ranks for whatever reason...just food for thought
