We would score 4 goals playing that set up.

Surprised not to see Acres back. How did he go last week with Sandy?

8cres traveled with the team to WA to visit his folks (I imagine) but probably as an emergency with Long so they both didn't play with Sandy.Sainternist wrote:Surprised not to see Acres back. How did he go last week with Sandy?
I can't believe Long is in as he has not exactly set the world on fire. I thought you needed to show something at the lower level?

Port tried tagging Rance with Trengove last week, only worked for a half.WellardSaint wrote:Here's an idea out of left field.saintbob wrote:Don't mind the inclusions, but I'm stilled miffed about Acres and Hickey not getting a game.
Put Gilbo onto Rance.
Think about it. Gilbo will stick closer to Rance than my dog to a piece of steak.
This will allow Membrey and Baroose to take marks with less pressure.
Long to run with Daniel Rioli
I'd much prefer Gilbo taking on Martin When he moves forward

It's a no brainer really isn't it. Worst thing is he was emergency last week and didn't get a chance to press his claim for a recall.Teflon wrote:would be playing Acres.

Still no certainty for Gilbo to play. Every player that gets KO'd the round before gets named in the team but not many actually make it to game day
So one of the emergencies could still likely come in

as a long term disbeliever in Dunstan, I must say he has shown a lot more since his return from VFL.saintspremiers wrote:Must say I'm impressed and delighted that Dunny & Weller were dropped but none of the ins excites me one Iota.
He needed to go back to work on things, and he came back better.
So I am very surprised he doesn't make the cut this week
The coaches have looked at how the Tigers play inside, and must think Dunstan
isn't a good fit.

Re: Team v Tigers
Dunny is a cyclical player.
Week 1 plays a great VFL game
Week 2 plays another excellent VFL game
Week 3 plays AFL and very well
Week 4 plays AFL and average at best
Week 5 plays AFL and is lamentable
....then cycle repeats

This. Also, we're not privy to what players are asked to work on when they play for Sandy - so we don't know when they've improved on it (whatever it was) - so we can't say whether or not they've 'earned' a recall. Can only trust the coaches on that.WellardSaint wrote:saintspremiers wrote: The coaches have looked at how the Tigers play inside, and must think Dunstan

Re: Team v Tigers
I like the changes as they are more about the future than the present.
Long and Dmaks form was not in itself demanding selection. So their selection is mainly about our future.
Savage looks set to be tried out in a new role that he has done well in at VFL level the last two weeks.
Collectively this week the three also make us a much speedier outfit when against the Tigers is a welcome move.

Others may disagree but I have them as two of our most talented and promising youngish players. Yet both seem out of favour.

He played the last 6 games of 2016,
and reports had him really blossoming and doing well.
When he did come into the seniors this year, he seemingly struggled to adjust to AFL again?
Then he was dropped without much chance to learn and improve.
I thought pre-season was all about getting fitter and stronger?
I would be happy seeing him this weekend if he was actually ready for seniors,
but testing him against the Tigers, who are in the Top 4,
is a huge ask- would have been better against Suns or Lions.

Re: Team v Tigers
I think both Hickey and Acres are a part of our future. But this is cyclical too. The selection committee play Longer or Hickey in blocks of consecutive games - or even an entire season, until they get hurt or injured, and then they bring the other one in, who plays a long block of games, or even the majority of the following season, and then around round 19 or 20 when there is only a few games to go, in comes Holmes, while they rest/get surgery/whatever.bigcarl wrote:Would you say Acres and Hickey are part of the future?saintsRrising wrote:I like the changes as they are more about the future than the present..

Hickey might be rebuilding his AFL-level fitness before re-entering the senior side, and then once Longer goes out, Hickey will come back in, and stay in until 22 and 23 when Holmes will play the last couple. At least we get to have a look at what they can do.
Because of the high risk nature of the ruck role I think the club need to keep both Hickey and Longer at the club long term. I have never forgotten 1997 when we had 3 ruckmen and that still wasn't quite enough to get us over the line, when our two best rucks got injured at the beginning of the finals series.

Yes, I get that. Almost tempting to play two ruckmen at times particularly if McCartin doesn't make it.samuraisaint wrote:I think both Hickey and Acres are a part of our future. Hickey is a very good footballer, as opposed to an intimidating hulk like Longer, and it is frustrating to see him not getting a game.
As for Acres, he wasn't given a chance last week to press his claims for reinclusion, travelling to Perth as emergency. While he is doing that and not racking up numbers for Sandringham, McKenzie, Savage and Long go past him. I don't like it.
I feel he should have come in for Dunstan and been given a crack at that role. But it seems they have him pigeonholed as a winger/flanker.

Re: Team v Tigers
Dmac just has to play a similar role to the Bogun from Tasmania.
If they play him at half forward, he will be average.

Yes it maybe about the future and it may make us on paper speedier, problem is, no sense being speedy if you can't get the ball.saintsRrising wrote:I like the changes as they are more about the future than the present.

Re: Team v Tigers
Sounds like Long will be forward - Richo said he has come in for Weller - Savage on a wing/HB and McKenzie HB/Wing. The selections were made to give a bit of flexibility, which is why Dunstan went out because all he can do is centre bounces.
Three players are basically the deck chairs on the titanic that is our goal kicking, though. Fingers crossed we use the ball well and take our chances. That's what'll decide the outcome for us.
