There is no way Dunstan will be omitted.
28 possessions and strong at the contest which will be needed against the Sydney midfield.

Re: Changes v Swines
This is an 8 point game.
We need strong, experienced players to match up with their bodies and pressure.
Hence Minchington and Sinclair are in the spotlight - and there is Webster.
McCartin, Stevens and McKenzie in.
The "small forward" duties are with Billings and Gresham plus mids rotating forward.
Pity Armitage and Hickey are unavailable.
Both would have been very useful
IF McKenzie can consolidate and shows he belongs at and can impact at this level, the return of Webster will then be interesting.
Whilst Gilbert was right up among our best on Saturday, never beaten and controlling the movement of the ball by running straight at it and Carlisle was also among our best, Roberton often had 2 for company including Number 1 and Brown did his job effectively, without Webster we lacked some rebounding run and targets for Gilbert and Carlisle to give to for rebound.
We would look for McKenzie to lock down his opponent and provide line breaking rebound with his pace and kicking, and if he can do this then what next?
It was interesting to me that at times both Roo and Sinclair were back - Sinclair seemingly provide what was missing due to Roberton being on other duties and Webster injured.
We just did not have that mid-sized run and carry with length disposal hence our ineffective F50 entries finding their Plus 1 and us then being hurt with the one over the back because we did not have the defensive leg speed to cover or close.
Montagna is always a risk because they can attempt to drag him back for an overhead contest.
Not Montagna's fault, just the options available,

K Stevens will be in 100% that's a lock.
Most vulnerable Mid? Dunstan
Most vulnerable player from Blues game- Minchington
Mc Cartin is pressing his claim as well.
Webster replacement - Mc Kenzie

McCartin in for Minchington?
If Rooey could run that wouldn't be a problem as he just goes back to wing. But he is clearly hampered at the moment.

Re: Changes v Swines
Big test, this game. As big as GWS I think.
The Swines were unlucky not to be premiers last season with the Bulldogs definitely getting the rub of the green in a close game.
Last season we matched them in the first half at the same venue before being completely over-run and outclassed. We've improved, sure, but they are recovering quickly from a poor start to the season and deserve healthy respect.
The big selection dilemma is Riewoldt. He just doesn't look 100 per cent. Actually I'll amend that as he never plays 100 per cent fit. He doesn't look 70 per cent. Can't bend and seems to be hobbling a fair bit. Can he play wing in this condition to give Paddy a game?

Re: Changes v Swines
Savage, Rice, McKenzie and White all hoping to replace Webster.
My money is on Savage as the best choice but for development purposes it may go to Rice.
Stevens must come back in - Weller & Dunstan in danger, Dunstan was definitely the better against Carlton but only plays midfield.
I think Dunstan will make way.
If Riewoldt does not come up then McCartin will come in although I would love to see Marshall upgraded and tried.
Marshall would be used as the second ruck as well as forward.
It would tell McCartin that he has to get AFL fit if he wants to play.

Maybe he's not. He'll never have the running capacity of, say, a Riewoldt.ace wrote: It would tell McCartin that he has to get AFL fit if he wants to play.
He's not that type of player. Very few are.
Speaking of whom, would you say Riewoldt is AFL fit? And I don't mean in an aerobic sense.

And so you really believe that McCartin does know already know that he needs to improve his fitness?
Also Marshall is also not yet ÄFL Match fit and so would suffer the same problem at AFL level that Paddy has which is aerobic endurance.
I am certainly hoping to see Marshall debut at some stage this year to give him a taste of what is required at the highest level. But right here and now Paddy is more ready to play at AFL level at present than Marshall is.
Marshall would have the edge only if the coaches wanted to strengthen our relief ruck.

Re: Changes v Swines
Tough call on the outs, I like all of them but Paddy needs to be rewarded. If roo misses, straight swap and we keep another mid in. Stevens comes straight in as he has been excellent and should be cherry ripe after a week off. I hope the selection committee are brace and pick smack or rice to replace Webster. Savage is the easy option but I don't think think he'll ever be defensive enough for mine. We must keep blooding the next Gen to see if they have what it takes!! Re: Changes v Swines
Good call on Savage. I know he got 33 but we know exactly what he brings and they need DMack to show if he's grown since those games last year. Pre-season usually improves a young fella on the up and Savage has no more 'up'Saint wagga wrote:Tough call on the outs, I like all of them but Paddy needs to be rewarded. Oppositions coaches know it.
When the opposing defence gets the ball Paddy/Marshall's opponent will have been instructed you run.
Become a lose man because they can't run with you.
Receive, and keep running forcing saints players further afield to leave their man.
Our forward ends up on the wrong side of the centre square and can only walk back to the goal square.
Our opponents create the loose man because one guy can't do his job.
One guy destroys the defensive efforts of the rest of the team.
It is the last couple of years of Fraser Gehrig all over again.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

Re: Changes v Swines
On reflection, SB , it may throw us out a bit without a like for like replacement. They like their spare man, 7 player defence type structure. Against the swines, we need all the hard bodies and inside grunt we can get, hence Stevens must play. Dunstan did enough to warrant another go. I think Minch may miss out for DMac, which would at least give us a direct replacement for JW. Then there's Paddy, who Gilbee said wasn't just "knocking on the door, but kicking it off the hinges!" A good problem to have, but Paddy may play another week in the twos. This game is shaping up as a challenge as great as the GWS game was. Swines looked back to somewhere near their best on the weekend.st.byron wrote:How do you reckon they'll re-structure the half backs with Webster missing?White Winmar wrote:Probably Webster, SB. Out: Webster
Possible Outs (in order of likelihood): Minchington, Gresham, Bruce, Weller
Possible Ins: McKenzie, Savage, McCartin, Stevens.
For mine it will be Webster and Minchington out for double mac (McKenzie and McCartin). Stevens unlucky.

I think Stevens is a near certainty to come back as he was our best clearance player in the wins over Hawthorn and GWS.Otiman wrote:Out: Webster

Interesting to see if this happens this SHOULD happen but if rooey stays in at 50% we all know who runs the club.
And if dunstan stays in over stevens theyll tear seaford down.
I really hope these changes happen.

Re: Changes v Swines
So let me get this right
After a full pre season and 8 Rounds into the season Mc Cartin is not AFL fit?
By what criteria?
And in terms of chasing and harassing what exactly is the job description of the small defensive forwards, and I do not subscribe to the need to have small defensive forwards preferring instead a Billings or a Gresham who can also win games for you aka last weekend

Wow! People calling for Sinclair as an out?
He not only has not put a foot wrong since coming back, but has just about been our best user of the ball.
He will not be dropped.

Out - Webster, Minch,
In - Koby, Paddy.
Swans are not overly quick and we could stretch them forward. I think Roo shouldn't play but he will.
