Visiting St Kilda, Scotland?

Yes as posted above I was lucky enough to get there a few years ago and it was one of the best things I have done. The football connection is one thing but the island itself is amazing. On a day trip you get enough time to walk around and see the old village (some houses have been restored) and to see the dramatic cliffs and masses of seabirds.
We went from Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris where we stayed in a self-contained cottage for a week. This was worth it too. Book for a couple of days if you can and then it is just a matter of crossing your fingers and hoping for fine weather.
I wouldn't fancy camping there - the 4-5 hours you get there on the day trip is enough.

Make sure you secure a decent hotel though as the cheaper ones can be pretty bad (by European standards anyway).

We stayed on Skye in 2011 at a hotel called Flodigarry. It's an old castle perched on the cliffs right at the north end of the island. Simply magnificent.

Well the redemption booking window for flight over just opened for our preferred date for 2018 and so I have snaffled a one-way ticket each for $86 each to London.

Not sure where we will fly out of yet. Probably Ireland. But have 11 weeks to think about it before the booking widow for the return flight opens.

It is a lot easier to visit St Kilda in South Australia. 20 years ago, not much to see though.

Yes it was Kilda Cruises from Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris. They were very good. The main issue determining whether the boats go or not is the sea conditions at St Kilda. .

One of Kilda's competitors offers a 2 booking block.

Well holiday plans have advanced somewhat. Flight booked there and back now and we are starting to flesh out what we will be doing.

And yes we have now committed to visiting St Kilda as part of our trip.

In the end we have decided to do it as part of a 14 day expedition cruise that will take in quite a number of Scottish Isles and remote places.

At 157 metres the small ship is larger than many of the boats that visit St Kilda, and so should hopefully ensure that we at least get to see St Kilda even if the sea conditions are too rough to land on the day that we are there. Plus it should make seasickness less likely.

I've been there too. A desolate, windswept place with an abandoned, grim children's playground with a mocked up shipwrecked wooden ship. Kinda spooky.
I especially remember the signs on the lonely road out on to the headland warning you that 'all vehicles entering this area will be filmed'.
My kids loved it I remember, but there was not a soul around.

So envious! I sailed round britain about 12 years ago now. We were in the hebrides and i was desperate to make that trip out to st kilda - but the weather just wouldnt permit. Have the best time on all our behalfs! Take your beany (and yr longjohns!) and bring back photos!
