Re: VFL Rd 1 Sandy vs Bombers
Look at the mid fielders we are developing and, of more importance, have recruited.
There is a reason for that, being the "hot" contest around the ball.
Hence the likes of Stevens, Steele, Acres.
And that is Minchington's problem.
Basically a VFL sized mid-fielder.
IF you are going to succeed as a 179cm, 80kg AFL mid-fielder you need CLASS, aka Montagna and Steven.
Apart from that, the Ross's, Dunstan's, Armitage's, Stevens', Steele's and Acres are going to dominate at the selection table.
So if you are say 180cm and 80kg, to consolidate at AFL level you need to have knocked the door down at junior levels and (basically) gone Top 10 in your year, hence the interest in Freeman.
I don't know where WB got Daniels in the Draft, but he was a senior player with South Adelaide in the SANFL so cutting his teeth against big bodies.
Templeton also was just too small to win opportunity and impose at AFL level.

Koby kicking the door down for a game
Minch and O'Kearney demanding that ppl take notice of them
I guess for Freeman it's great that he got through the game unscathed

McCartin only 2 goals. Looks like he had a poor game

Re: VFL Rd 1 Sandy vs Bombers
Freeman looked good in the first half as did the team. Got lots of touches and didn't appear to be hampered by any "awareness" at all. He's probably a bit rusty though. I noticed he missed a few targets by hand!
Ray Connellan is bloody quick. If he can learn to kick he could be very handy. There was a play where the Bombers were kicking in, Ray picked off the kick, ran all the way around the Bombers player and went inside 50 which turned into a goal.
Paddy was ok. Took some nice marks on the lead. Unfortunately most of the I50 kicks to him he was stationary near the goal square and there was always 3/4 bombers jumping into and in front of him. I know they're completely different players, but Roo would always lead back and forth in the same area to try to get some separation.
Meatball was really good. He can play on the ball and go forward and is very dangerous around the goals. I think he would be better than Lonie in the team at the moment.

Re: VFL Rd 1 Sandy vs Bombers
Minchington outstanding today especially in the forward line.
Mc Cartin did well and had a great attitude all game.
Freeman was up and at it which was good to see.
I thought Marshall showed plenty and looks like he will bust the door down for a spot on the list.
I think Longer and Holmes won't be on our list next year.
Koby Stevens did well and so did O Kearney.
Bailey Rice struggled fitness wise, looks underdone for mine.
Good for the zebras to get over the line.

Re: VFL Rd 1 Sandy vs Bombers
My wrap from second quarter to half way through last;
Paddy - not so hungry, took a couple of decent grabs, seemed to be double teamed, thought he busted his finger at one point
O'Kearney - noticeable, fluid footballer and brave, looks Monty like
Stevens - did some awesome things inside, so cluey and tough
Freeman - looks in good condition, didn't see his explosive pace, but moved well through dense traffic, got into good positions
Joyce and Connellan - combined brilliantly in one passage of play coming out of defence. Another; Connellan took great chest mark on wing and burst past an opponent to left foot kick to Wright for easy goal top of the square. If he's not a left footer it was a brilliant kick at top speed, because it was a good kick anyway.
Marshall - got involved a lot and used his height, just didn't hold as many as he should have
Wright - seemed ok
Minchington - brilliant footballer, good game
Longer - serviceable
Battle - after a good mark missed a sitter, a little quiet
Phillips - if I'm getting him right I thought he was solid. Reminded me of Seb, impressed, and looks good size too
White - did one passage of play out of defence that was brilliant, looks sensational on the gallop and in the air
Sinclair - seemed to be in among it a lot of the time, some strong tackling
McKenzie - did some nice things, worked hard
Rice - thought he was great to watch, looks the real deal, composed and thick set, assured type of player, closes in nicely
That's probably about it and for the most part glass half full. A good win for the Zebs who were up against drug cheats enthused to fight back.

Re: VFL Rd 1 Sandy vs Bombers
I too thought Paddy was pretty good - took several marks at the ball's high point and probably should have kicked 4 (missed an easy shot in the last that was important). Barring injuries in the ones though (touch wood), I doubt that he did enough to demand an immediate recall.
As is obvious, Minch was very good. Koby-wan was very business-like in that he appears to take it as a given that he must commit to contests and fired out some sharpish hands.
First time I have seen Marshall and Battle. Some good signs, particularly re the former today.
