I remember reading that one of the two Irishmen could not be, which is why I posted what I did above.saintbrat wrote:saintsRrising wrote:skeptic wrote:I'm a little surprised at that
Rookies spots will be tight in 2017. One of the 2 Irishmen already committed to has to take a normal rookie slot.
NOK and Coghlan both showed enough to be kept, but not necessarily elevated
Fisher may require one.
there was some suggestion teams can have 3/4 international rookies in each catagory? which are above regular rookies?
anyone know?

Under an AFL agreement with the Gaelic Athletic Association clubs are only allowed one Irish player on their international (category B) rookie list which dictates that the older player Connellan is likely to come to the Saints as a category A rookie.
http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-ex ... ie-players
IRISH ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION
Irish players can be signed directly to a club’s Rookie List under the International Player Rule and do not have to go through the draft. Previously, Irish players could not be listed as Category B rookies but took a spot on the main Rookie List.
Clubs can now list one Irish player as a Category B rookie but for each additional Irish player rookie listed, that player will be deemed to be a Category A rookie and the club will forfeit its last selection in the Rookie Draft for each additional player listed.

There are very very few we draft in or trade in that we don't immediately adopt as our own.
Even if we don't in our heart of hearts think they can make it, it still bites the big one when they are told there is no place for them.

Curren (unfortunately), Lee, Delaney, Murdoch, Saunders, Baker-Thomas i think are close to definite.
i question what they will do with Shenton and Holmes.
I was a big fan of curren but just seemed to fall down the pecking order.
Fisher i reckon gets kept on the rookie list if he wants the spot. Be perfect in the Schnides roles as a player "coach". From what ive heard about fish he's keen on coaching and has done quite a bit of work with both the Dragons and the Zebs over the last few seasons.
Also on a side note i had Nathan Wright as a delisting earlier in the year and i'm glad to be proven wrong. i think hes got a bright future as a flex def/fwd.

Re: Delistings
Great call on Wright - just took his chance with both hands and held on for dear life. I think both he and Minch have probably done enough this year to show they can play afl and be bit players in our best 22 and depth players if guys like templeton and sinclair and lonie overtake them categorically. It's a good posi to be in and these players have probably pushed aside curren, saunders etc...Wombat15 wrote:Curren (unfortunately), Lee, Delaney, Murdoch, Saunders, Baker-Thomas i think are close to definite.

The sooner the better. We should be a destination club and we want to send a message out to the market as to how many spots we will have to fill on the list.
Last few years were different - need to be brutal this year and cut to the chase ASAP.
Great to hear we being aggressive and not drip feeding the delistings like the last few years

Absolutely nothing to do with "destination" (cliché word of the year)> Does it matter if 6 or 9 go as to attracting other players
Why use a word like brutal? These are young men who have given their all for our club show some respect
I would like to think that the club would wait to see how some perform in the Sandy final(s)

Re: Delistings
Well I have to say I'm a little bit annoyed in particular at Curren being given the chop.
Never got the opportunity to play at what he was good at, inside mid and was played as a tagger or defensive forward and has had injuries this year.
I hope he gets an opportunity elsewhere

Re: Delistings
That's only two off the main list, so at least one more has to go.
Chips I guess if he's to be rookied. Can't see anyone who might be retiring to create list space.
Tom Lee might stay.
