Put your thinking caps on! Best 22

Re: Put your thinking caps on! Best 22
Everyone is naming a ruckman on the bench. We know that cant really happen anymore. Does that suggest we are struggling to fit 2 ruckmen in the 18?
Re: Put your thinking caps on! Best 22
I really rate Simpkin, but I think he's depth for now. ( or maybe in front of Bruce ).spot on wrote:We have so many tall half back players its hard to fit them in, simpkin , roberton, dempster , fisher , Gilbert, gwilt. Some are going to have to find new roles
Dempster can play as a general "tagger" if required but then what of Jones.
Gilbert maybe in the midfield.
My optimal backline would be
Fisher, Geary, Roberton, Delaney, Gwilt, Gilbert.
But I think it would be a good idea for Gilbert to play midfield ( dempster in ) and put Geary in the mid to allow Wright or Dunnel or someone to play in the backline.

i f i was a betting man.....i'd be betting that curren will be in the line up come round onemartymcfly_86 wrote:What would the BEST St Kilda round 1 line up be, given the inclusions thus far? (to be revised post draft)

C: HAYES ARMITAGE SAUNDERS
HF: SCHNEIDER RIEWOLDT SAVAGE
F: STANLEY LEE MONTAGNA
R: HICKEY [OR LONGER] STEVEN CURREN

From the small sample of games I saw, I have Saunders as our best player from the 11' draftees. Apart from being a little undersized, he's got plenty going for him. Natural ball winner, quick, good endurance, skills look good and hard as a cats head. I likey.Jimmy O'Dea wrote:Saunders has to play.

Back half is hard to pick.
Although the last 3 pre seasons I often think we have heaps of depth.
By May im wondering how on earth we can find a dozen ok players.
I dont think we can play Dempster and Gwilt in the same side even though they are different players. Dempster is a tall who plays on smalls. Gwilt is a small who plays on talls.
Geary Bruce Fisher
Webster Roberton Gilbo
Wright Armo Montagna
Schneider Roo Savage
Curren Lee Maister/Stanley
Hickey Ross Steven
Hayes Newnes Dempster Ray
Em Delaney Minchington Milera

Some of these sides are a joke
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I think a lot of people, including me, fall into the same trap. Plugger is more the realist. Where I see things through rose glasses, his are more of an off-yellow, jaundiced shade.#gosaintas wrote:I am a chronic overrater of our players.
He is probably right, though, unless we get off to an absolute flyer and get some momentum early. We can hope.

Re: Put your thinking caps on! Best 22
No matter how hard I try i can't find a BEST 22.
The problem is that whatever 22 I come up with, they are a bunch of losers.
No not the derelict type, I mean the type that keep losing every week.
There are about 5 players missing, all of them crack super star midfielders.
You know the type, the type that never fail year after year to get at least 20 brownlow votes.
The types who ensure that your forwards get to use the ball first instead of your defenders opponents.
Not our types who try hard every week and do a few good things, only their opponents do those good things twice or three times as often.
We have 3 picks in the top 20 but are there 3 Pendlebury's reserved just for us.
They have to be as good as Pendlebury, not just nearly as good as Pendlebury, because if they aren't as good as Pendlebury they will get beaten by Pendlebury.
And if your midfielders get beaten by Pendlebury, your team gets beaten by Pendlebury.
We have a host of midfielders who no matter how hard they try, they will always be beaten by Pendlebury and our team gets beaten.
We don't need any more midfielders who make up the 22 while we get beat.
We only need midfielders as good as Pendlebury.
I would give up both picks 18 and 19 just to be able to land 1 Pendlebury.

Can't see Siposs in anyone's team?
IMO he will have a breakout year next year. Well I'm hoping so anyways

Don't know why on last years efforts....would prefer Murdoch or Billings if we get him.BigMart wrote:Incorrect
He's in my team
Wright should play our small defender,he was great back there (before Betts took him out)
Geary needs to be the new tagger to replace CJ (with slightly better skills)
Gilbert needs to be put up on the wing or HFF due to massive glut of tallish defenders....Roberton, Dempster and Gwilt ahead of him for these roles
Nee!

Like it
Also noticed no one has picked Jones .
Yet a lot have said he is their best tagger .
Think myself Jones Gwilt will play 2's A lot before being gone end of 2014
Doubt they will play new draftees many games either next year unless injuries hit

Re: Put your thinking caps on! Best 22
Next year i think we will still be better than GWS, probably on par with Dees ( I do think Roos will make them more competitive), and Brisbane will fall to around our level and the Bulldogs will remain slightly in front of us. Bottom 4 for us - but as long as we can get some games into our next generation and not get blown away then I'm OK with that. My hope is that our best players list every week does not include the Reiwoldt, Hayes, Fisher and Montagna.
B: Dempster Delaney Roberton
HB: Fisher Bruce Gilbert
C: Montana Hayes Newnes
HF: Stanley Reiwoldt Savage
F: Schneider Lee Milera
R: Hickey Steven Armitage
I: Geary Gwilt Pick3 Curren
Would love to see any of Webster Ross Markworth Saunders Wright force their way into this team.

We cant be that bad if you cant find a spot for roberton, ray, gilbert, gwilt, simpkin. Maybe not all doom and gloom for next year. Bit of depth and competition for spots . Re: Put your thinking caps on! Best 22
On the basis the team is looking forward for the future with consideration to the vets providing support, the best 22 may be different to the best 22 players Round 1, if that makes sense.
B: Wright, Delenay, Roberton
HB: Dempster, Bruce, Fisher
C: Montagna, Hayes, Savage
HF: Stanley, Roo, Newness
F: Schnieder, Lee, Webster
Foll: Hickey/Longer, Steven, Armitage
Int: Curren, Geary, Ross, Gilbert
Emerg: Billings, Garlett( assume) Siposs
It is unlikely Delenay or Bruce will be better than say Gwilt early on but need to look forward with selecting the side- so I think the Term best 22 may have a very different meaning for StKilda in the next 2 seasons, compared to other clubs.

Geary has been playing as a small defender for about 5 years.
Where do you reckon he plays ?
And dont say 'back flank'
Defenders take a specific opposition fwd so if you are hung up on whether someone is a bp or an hbf I suggest you go back to under 12s.
