Re: Laidley linked to Melbourne? !!
It's Watters call and his reputation is on the line, over who he gets on board. He knows most of those available and some personally, very well.
Neeld looks cold and calculating to me - not a people developer. Ayres has burnt a few bridges.

Re: Laidley linked to Melbourne? !!
Teffers will never recover if we lose Laidley.
Here's an idea… Mick Malthouse is a total flog & being an assistant under him does not mean you will have any more chance of being a good coach…
guy mckenna 56 games
11 wins 45 losses 19%
mark neeld 33 games
5 wins 28 losses 15%
scott watters 33 games
14 wins 19 losses 42%
brad scott 77 games
39 wins 38 losses 50%
dean laidley 144 games
71 wins 71 losses 50%
mick malthouse 626 games
366 wins 256 losses 58%
58% win/loss for a guy that has coached 20 seasons at 2 of the richest & well resourced clubs is pretty average really… I reckon I would have coached a flag or 2 if I was given 29 seasons at the job. Terry Wallace is the butt of many jokes, but he has roughly the same win/loss % as malthouse, even though he was only ever at 2 ordinary clubs…

Guy Mckenna - is in charge of a group of kids who in their third season look to be getting into the mold of what your would expect from an AFL footballer ... the first three years results shouldnt be factored into his coaching ability .. next year we will have a better idea on if he can coachdragit wrote:

Mark Neeld - copped a team that embraced losing FFS their list was cut to its bones in regards to its experiance , it had little to no spirit its leaders are inexperianced and lack guidance and the backroom of the club is run by a bunch of chimps with typewriters ... he didnt show much as a coach but to be fair he had two parts of stuff all to work with
Scott Watters - has taken on a club that has topped up and avoided a rebuild for over a decade - he comes in to the club after its most successful period (in a win loss %) in 140 years, with no real foundations to work off other than a handful of aging stars and a sprinkle of younger skill- in rebuild mode now and will be for the next 2-5 years depending on the drafting skills, a REAL assesment of his coaching skills cant really be assesed until he has finished building his team
Brad Scott - no resources and a fairly bad run of luck have hurt him , he can coach and i think he is prob better than his brother to be honest just one got a better team to work with than the other (by team i include board , recruitment staff, assistants ect..)
Dean Laidley - ive debated this many times so im not going to rehash over it again

Fair defences Trav… & I'm not actually making a call on any of Watters/McKenna/Scott yet.
All I am saying is that there seems to be this mystique surrounding Mick and the people that have worked under him… and his own 58% win/loss is nothing impressive considering where he has been for most of 30 years.
I think he's just a flog who has been given more time than most, with better lists and resources than most.

Re: Laidley linked to Melbourne? !!
i do agree with regards to Mick and his coaching , i mean lets be honest the team he had with the WCE in the 90's to come away with only 2 flags is in my opinion under what they should/could have got honestly that team should have done what the lions did in the early 2000s and what the Cats have done in the current era , his time at collingwood with every possible resource available again he prob under achieved but one thing rings true to me out of it , Collingwood were prepared to wait it out , to their credit they put their faith in Mick and then eventually he delivered on that (and lets be fair ask any Collingwood fan and they will tell you the flag was worth it) ... here is where we differ in our history i dont think we have ever let a coach have the luxury to take his time to deliver even now when we are clearly in a rebuild there is some pressure on our coach ... we sack first ask questions later .. Collingwood stayed the path and eventually got there (what they did after that is their act of stupidity)dragit wrote:Fair defences Trav… & I'm not actually making a call on any of Watters/McKenna/Scott yet.

Agree Trav, I certainly want to see Watters given every chance to show us that he is a good coach… anything less than 5 years will not be a reasonable amount of time to show us anything… unless there is a series of calamitous decisions/mistakes.

Re: Laidley linked to Melbourne? !!
I agree, dragit. SW was an excellent assistant by all accounts and let's not forget he's a WAFL premiership coach as well. So his antecedents are solid. The problem is, as we have seen first hand with Neeld, is that there's a vast gulf between the penultimate and ultimate levels. Can SW bridge that gap? Too early to tell, although I believe he has looked a bit lost at times this year.
On the positive side, I think he's realised that we need the dreaded rebuild and at least he has reset the course for that. I think he should've done that from the start, but given our club's history of impatience, I can't really blame him for starting out looking for wins. I hope the CEO takes him aside and assures him he has at least until the end of 2015 to show he's up to the task. Even if we're not winning consistently by then, at least we should have plenty of evidence to determine whether we have the right man. If he's looking good by that stage, sign him up for the long term.

I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!
Re: Laidley linked to Melbourne? !!
I reckon Neeld would be a great acquisition as assistant. He barely had enough time to do anything at Melbourne and sacking him was stupid. Spoken highly of by many and Watters has worked with him before. He'd have a burning desire to prove everyone wrong post-Melbourne and given his massive payout might come at a very reasonable price. Get him now!
