Macadom05- thanks for those clips - best football I watched all year - very moving game, and winner goal from 50 out with a couple of minutes to go is pure gold.

Re: The Day Nicky Winmar took a stand (The Age)
I remember that day. I was 17 and stood near the forward pocket with my brother. I'd been to Vic Park before but had never felt so intimidated or heard so much racism at a footy match before. I don't think I'd heard the phrase 'petrol sniffer' before that day.
We were surrounded by a stack of filth supporters mouthing off when when two ******* massive blokes - both St kilda supporters - started telling people off for being racist. I couldn't believe they had the balls. I was crapping myself and here they were giving it back to them. Incredibly the racist taunts slowed down after that.
I can't remember seeing Nicky pull up his jumper. My brother saw it - I must've been looking over my shoulder.
I work near Vic Park now. They've spent a bundle doing up the ground. They have plaques all over the place talking about famous things that happened at the ground. I'll be buggered if I can see one that mentions Nicky Winmar. Seems odd - was a significant moment in AFL history.
