Think the other week when running into an open goal and not taking the shot has been burnt into the coach's mind?!
That miss was terrible and may have been the difference between finals and no finals.

Raph hasn't played since he was run down from behind against North. I think our new coach holds a grudge or two...
On that basis, why is Gram playing after being run down against Collingwood?
Raph has a habit of being run down....everybody knows that. I think the game against North was the last straw. I could be wrong.

Judd.
Exactly where I was heading, he just wasn't blessed but worked harder than most others to get where he has. IMO.

Even if a preseason miraculously improved his kicking I'm not sure he would have the confidence on game day to take the kick?

Happy to be proven wrong

Umm have you guys seen Judd's skills? They are closer to jones' than they are dal santos!!
You would get someone more like Nathan Buckley or even our own brendon Goddard when he was actually a gun!
But geez I'd back jones hitting a target before judd

Being found out now. Really was a good player for us in 2009-2010. Ross really got the most out of him. But he just doesnt have good skills, terrible skills.

Watters has been around successful teams long enough to know you can't carry too many poor skills in one team if you want to go all the way. Poor skills and decision making have cost us a lot. Looking at the Swans v Collingwood match last week, even though it was flat out and congested, the skill level of the two teams was high, compared to when we played the Swans, our skills, and decision making especially by foot were terrible and cost us the game largely. Maybe Jones is under the microscope by Watters.

I agree.
Can run all day, good overhead, skills are okay.
He can sneak forward and hurt his opponent.
Was it the drawn Grand Final he shut down Swan?

matt de boer over at freo is actually pretty close to jones in that he's a bull who racks up the pill, but like cj has skills closer to u12's standard than the afl. So Ross already has a jones type, and will probably get him to play in a role that will cover his weaknesses. For all of ross' shortcomings he was pretty good at bringing the best out of players by structuring the team to cover weaknesses and bring out strengths.

So you agree but you also disagree. It's one or the other.

IMO Jones should play against the Cats but longer term players with his skill deficiency shouldn't be on the list. I'm assuming the latter is the direction Watters is going in based off the presser last weekend. Makes sense to me anyway.

To me jones is probably getting pushed further away due to the fact he could tag but also go on ball in an in and under role. We have guys waiting for a go there with longer term prospects like Armo and steven on top of Lenny and even Dal if needed. We have Ross and Ledger as well. Melbourne really only has Magner that can extract, Jones would be handy at another club with those attributes. In that role getting first touch and dishing off means disposal by foot isn't as necessary.

Armo and Steven now past him and give Ledger and Ross another pre-season or two and there won't be any room for Jones on the list IMO. At this point in time I'd feel more confident with Jones in the team against the Cats than Cripps (although they play very different roles). Watters seems to be playing Goddard more in the midfield which may have worked against Jones as well.

Jones has been poor all year but I agree that Goddard's move to the midfield has worked against Jones. BJ has finally found some form being around the play more and with Lenny, Steven, Armo, Dal and Joey already demanding midfield time there is no more room for Jones.

I'm happy to have Cripps in as sub as there's every chance he'll come in and sneak in a couple of goals in the last quarter. I'm really hoping we don't get any early injuries though as I don't think Cripps could keep up in a whole match.

Can some one tell me how he stuffs up his kicks , is it the drop of the ball or he is wrong footed when he kicks ,he is seriously awkward as we know. He should hang out with the hawks lefties for a while. How hard is it to change your style?

I think it's essentially ball drop and timing. He has a strange, awkward technique that result in lots of high balls and shanks. I suspect he has worked extremely hard on it over the years but just doesn't have the coordination. Just like everyone's unco friend that tries hard at any sport or even musical instrument but can never quite get it right.

Hrmm he has missed two games ... We all jumping to conclusions about him .. Personally I reckon he's carrying an injury (ribs??) that allows him to play but not quiet to the standard of AFL ...

I say ribs because I have noticed in his last two games he had strapping around his upper mid section

Kicking!! Hes not alone with poor kicking. Skills by foot is the more serious weakness the Saints have.

Need plenty of protection to enable players to get clear and even then they cant find a player in black, white and red! Appalling

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency
