Delusional? Don't like either of these teams but the umpiring in the last quarter was inconsistent and incompetent and had a major impact on the result of the game. But Geischen and Dimwit will just gloss over yet another appalling display from their clowns with whistles. Not good enough IMHO.sRaf wrote:Umpires aren't cheats and anyone who thinks so is delusional.
Whenever there is a loss, it's always blamed on the umpires, but not the 22 players on the field.
Umpiring decisions might affect the game, but the only thing which determined the result tonight were the 44 players on the field.

Regardless if it was a free or not, the umpires did not cheat. Umpires do not cheat.degruch wrote:Thanks Einstein, but we have eyes...what do you call Hodge having his head ripped off with minutes to go, in front of goals, 4 points down? Most people call it a free.
Games are more often than not decided by the players, but more often than not the blame is put on umpires. That is what I'm trying to get at.Dal_Santos_Gal wrote:Short memory there mate, 2009 GF ring a bell, when a goal is PAID when it hit the bloody post..... We were 5 points down when the siren went, so yes the umpires can change how a game is played out.
There were free kicks that were paid, there were some that weren't. There were some mind boggling stupid decision made by Hawthorn players, but the majority of people are ignoring those and focusing on the umpires. Hawthorn cost themselves the game, but I'm not knocking you for having a different POV.desertsaint wrote:nice last sentence - something that might affect the game doesn't help determine the result?
a number of horrid, game determining decisions, all one way.
the umpiring in this instance absolutely determined the game.
really feel for the hawks. they must be spewing, but publicly have to suck it up.
Free Kicks in the last quartersaint tezza wrote:what irks me is that channel 7 was happy to show a free kick count when it was all even or close to but they wouldnt put up the free kick count at the end of the game because in the last quarter the free kicks fell all one way.
There is no doubt Hawthorn were robbed and anyone who cant see that has blinkers on .
I dont care for either side but free kicks or lack of determined the result.
Hawthorn 7, Collingwood 7

How about high on hodge just outside the goalsquare? What a fukking absolute disgrace. Anyone wankers in this thread who say umpires cant directly effect the outcome of a close match like that have absolutely no idea, go follow another sport.
Hawthorn should make as much noise as possible and rightly feel completely ripped off!!
Cue Plugger66 and his small but merry band of umpire/AFL apologist dickheads. FFS.

You can say it a thousand time (and I know what you're getting at re: tonight), but Centrebet and a goal umpire suggest you're probably not 100% right.sRaf wrote:Regardless if it was a free or not, the umpires did not cheat. Re read my post. I'm not calling people who are questioning the umpiring decisions delusional, I'm calling the people who think umpires are cheats (as in, go out of their way to screw a team) delusional. Hey, umpires are inconsistent and can be incompetent. I am not denying that. The fact that umpiring differs from game to game irritates me to no end.gurubob101 wrote:Delusional? What I am denying is that Hawthorn lost because of the umpires. I always share the perspective that players are more responsible for a loss than umpires.

Of course, there are exceptions and isolated instances, but that's also the case in every facet of the game.degruch wrote:You can say it a thousand time (and I know what you're getting at re: tonight), but Centrebet and a goal umpire suggest you're probably not 100% right.sRaf wrote:Regardless if it was a free or not, the umpires did not cheat. The statement 'umpires are cheats' is the same as 'assistant coaches are gamblers'. Both are sweeping statements and generalisations which are false.

The paranoid in me says we've only seen the tip of the iceberg...the realist in me says those in the umpiring fraternity who are less professional than some, get carried away by the crowd and make stupid decisions based on the flow of the game. Tonight was a perfect example. Maybe not cheating, yes.sRaf wrote:Of course, there are exceptions and isolated instances, but that's also the case in every facet of the game.degruch wrote:You can say it a thousand time (and I know what you're getting at re: tonight), but Centrebet and a goal umpire suggest you're probably not 100% right.sRaf wrote:Regardless if it was a free or not, the umpires did not cheat. look it's simply naive in the extreme to state that umpires don't cheat. there are many instances of match fixing by umpires around the world.
if you speak in absolutes expect people to pull you up on it.
now go and do a bit of research on the subject before getting on your high horse.
or simply use a bit of reasoning - umpires are human, some humans cheat, ergo, some umpires cheat.
and no i don't think these particular umpires cheated, i think they were just incompetent and swayed by the crowd and the occassion.
and yes it definitely cost hawthorn the game - if umpired correctly the hawks would have won.

Was at the game.
Umpiring was pretty good till 3/4 time.
Actually it was very good.
But the last quarter was a total disgrace.
They did to Hawthorn what they did to us in the 2009 GF
S H A F T E D !!!!!!
Did they have an "agenda".
Are they incompetent?
Did they just have a bad quarter?
What really irks me is when the officiating umpire got it so blatently wrong, none of the others came in to override.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

The frees were 7 to 7 after 3/4 time so how does this show bias. I saw some bad decisions, both ways.
It seems that when Hawthorn had the pressure the frees were all OK, when Collingwood lifted the pressure in the last quarter the frees were somehow all bad!!!??
Rubbish. They were both ways.
Sad to see Hawthorn go down but I dont blame the umpires for this just like I dont blame the umpires for many games St. Kilda lost this year.
There were many game this year this site claims Saints were robbed. Often when the Saints had 20-30% more frees. Thats bias decision making.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

Can't argue with this. High horse? I've been open to discussion and have done my best to reply to all. Or is it just because I share a different view on the matter?desertsaint wrote:look it's simply naive in the extreme to state that umpires don't cheat. there are many instances of match fixing by umpires around the world.

See my reply to degruch a few posts up. Sure there are isolated instances and there are outliers, but a simple bit of reasoning will show that the statement 'umpires are cheats' (which is this topic's title) is not a valid statement. That is what I was replying to. We are speaking in generalities and in general, this is the case. I'm guilty of speaking in absolutes, but I just thought it was common sense that there are exceptions (though very few in our great game). But now we're just getting into semantics.
I'm not denying incompetence and I'm not denying inconsistency since as you mentioned, it's human nature. I still hold the view that Hawthorn cost themselves the game, but that's just my perspective and I respect that you share a different one. To each their own.

As a further point, my old man being a Weagles supporter (and shockingly bad sport when it comes to supporting), I'm hyper-sensitive to the huge advantage the Wet Toast are given at home by the umpires - something I've always put down to the phenomenon I've described above. I had to choke down the bile as I cheered "go Blues" last week and, hey presto, what cost 'em the game? Some appalling free kicks to the Worst Coast, just as predicted. Aren't there any umpires who can resist the crowd over there?
