Definitely strange for Whateley, a self styled rational thinker in the midst of hysteria (or so he claims) to be so out of step to think the attacks on Malthouse were a media vendetta.stinger wrote:yep...bit hard to swallow wasn't it....robbo suggested that the little dweb come clean on his conflict of interest thoughPaytonPlace wrote:

Becca, that is a fair point.PaytonPlace wrote:Sorry to play the bewildered Yank again, but until this year I always thought two of the main features of going to an AFL game were that supporters could sit together and everyone left together. Try wearing an opposition shirt in the Superdome and see how you go (and yes, I know it's a bit different because essentially most grounds are neutral in this day and age, but I've been safely interstate and at Geelong in my time)Sainternist wrote:What amazes me that, after all these years, since introducing allocated seating, the AFL has yet to devise a way of separating supporters from both competing clubs. I was put in a bay of mainly Filth fans for GF2, even though I was granted a ticket through being September Saint status. Perhaps that was through fault of Ticketek's distribution of GF2 tickets.
So I left my seat, which I had paid almost $100 years extra for and made for standing room in an effort to find refuge from the Filth Army.
I would hate for that to be ruined - its a special part of going to the football in this country.
I'd hate to feel we need to get to segregation...maybe just for games against them? Might be getting to that stage. It's easy planned, but we'd lose something very special.

Perhaps segregation is a little too extreme, considering our relatively peaceful climate amongst AFL supporters and at matches.
However, when it comes down to a GF, I believe it looks better when the supporters of both competing clubs are in their own respective tribes. It just makes for a good aesthetic and atmosphere.
Remember last year? The sea of red, white and black behind those Punt Road goals just looked incredible. Remeniscent to that of an FA Cup Final at Wembley.
I personally, like to be amongst fellow St.Kilda supporters over the course of a game. Very rarely do I enjoy having opposition fans in close range whilst the Saints are fighting a match out. They just irritate me. Perhaps I am intolerant in this respect? But if you don't mind a little banter with the opposition fan nearby, that is okay.
You do have an excellent point about the fact that crowd violence hasn't really been much of an issue for us. At least in comparison to other sporting leagues around the world. In this respect we are very lucky. Well said!
Hopefully it will remain this way
