We copped Collingwood off their game, and couldn't win. We had guys giving everything, and still weren't good enough to beat a team off their game and who kicked poorly.

I don't believe Collingwood were off their game as much as guys like Gwilt, Dawson, Dempster, Baker, Farren making some of their stars look ordinary?

Have to admit, it's very hard to get excited about this season. We have won all the big home and away matches,we have won prelims, yet we have lost the last two grand finals. All we have left is to win a premiership, the ride to that stage is no longer enjoyable,it's all or nothing for me now unfortunatly, was like that last year, this year will be worse.
It will almost be a relief when we start the rebuild
We have been a tormented group of people

I agree. fancy not winning a simple GF when we gave it our best. They are very easy to win and when you give your best and only come away with a draw against side that was probably better than you all year then you are in heaps of trouble.rodgerfox wrote:His words were about the team. It's not neccessarily whether they did give their best or not, it was the mindset of one of the players that suggested (infact he literally stated it) that they'd given it everything, and it wasn't good enough.SainterK wrote:The bolded part is why they can't say they gave it their best...rodgerfox wrote:

While I'm concerned about our performance in the last 2 GF's, I'm really only concerned regarding the mental scars that we'll carry if we make it again.
That said, there are 3 factors that may change that, or at least help to elininate that issue.
Firstly the fact that we've had an 80% turn over in our coaching dept.
Second, we need some of our younger guys to step up and take a role... There are 5 - 6 guys that IMO need to be replaced by younger talent, but if the younger talent doesn't present, then I don't think we'll improve. If we can turn over at minimum 3-4 we'll improve. And in doing so the past becomes irrelevant to them.
And as mentioned in the original post I'm hoping that the current issue might harden up those involved...
While Rooey and Dal are stars IMO they are not physical intimidating enough, and sometimes go missing mentally....
If it goes the other way we are history.
IMO as mentioned above, Lenny and BJ did all they could physically do in the GF's in all 3 in fact... It was our other stars that failed.
So imo there is plenty to work with, and there is plenty of potential improvement, however it means nothing unless we win it.
So as I said this season will be tough.

Physical performances can be improved if your head decides it wants you to.
If your head isn't right, you're rooted.
And that's why Goddard's comments surprised/concerned me.
It was the first hint of surrender I'd heard in 2-3 years. He sounded broken. He sounded as if he'd just realised we weren't good enough.
If it is infact the case that players are questioning themselves as a premiership team (which to be honest is understandable after losing 2 in a row) then we are rooted.

How did you go following the Saints in the 80's?
I was 5 in the 80s, so I went about aswell as a 5yo kid would go following the footy.
Why do you ask? What does that have to do with my posts?
`
Didnt have any birthdays in the 80's. Very strange. Anyway my question has nothing to do with any of your posts but then again what does BJ saying after a game have to do with this thread. I must say I find it funny that what BJ said worried you but when someone said BJ did well in the GF you mentioned something like the team didnt though. Unless BJ went and surveyed all the players before he spoke surely he was only talking for himself and as such it didnt seem to effect his game the following week.

I'm hoping that a few new personel and hopfully a harder mental edge may change it up a bit.rodgerfox wrote:That's my concern.Leo.J wrote:While I'm concerned about our performance in the last 2 GF's, I'm really only concerned regarding the mental scars that we'll carry if we make it again.

Regarding the BJ comments, I took it as he was talking in the 3rd person at the time.
As in, we = he BJ. And as he nearly carried us over the line, I think he was speaking from a personal POV.

It mentioned the bubble, and the fact that the players had been able to stay focussed on the prize throughout last year's issues and following a GF loss.
It's suggests that this year will be much harder.
I raised BJ's comments because I felt they showed chinks in the armour of a guy and a team that had seemed to have been inprenitable in terms of their drive and mental state.
Obviously that was only my take on his comments. My interpretation of them.
They worried me as as a supporter I was ready to go again when that siren blew. I thought we had them.
When the microphone went in front of BJ's face I was expecting to hear something along the lines of what most Saints fans were feeling. But instead I heard a deflated and 'unconvinced' guy.
I thought in the context of this thread, it's fair to add this to the discussion.
As for your reply, I have no idea how it fits in.
So did it effect how BJ played the next week in your opinion?rodgerfox wrote:This thread is suggesting that it will be a tough year mentally for the team.plugger66 wrote:rodgerfox wrote:??plugger66 wrote: My post makes complete sense to what you posted so yes I was responding to your post.

I didn't see the following week.plugger66 wrote: So did it effect how BJ played the next week in your opinion?
But from all reports, it didn't.
However it may well have been an accurate description of the mental state of the rest of the team. Based on the scoreline, we didn't even show up the second week.
Hence me raising it in a thread of this nature. If it was a sign that we aren't 100% switched on, then this year will be a long one.
As I also said earlier, it's totally understandable for a team to lose their belief after getting rolled in two GFs.

At your age, you might want to lay off the grog a bit.

You obviously are just making up that last comment. You wouldnt have a clue about the mental state of the others and unless BJ surveyed them before he spoke neither would he and considering you said the person who made the comment played well his mental state seemed OK.rodgerfox wrote:I didn't see the following week.plugger66 wrote: So did it effect how BJ played the next week in your opinion?
