Caro seems to think Goose is gone. Will be interesting to see what happens. Maybe the club could use the 16th pick to upgrade to Hawthorn's pick (pick 9?) in exchange for Goose. Then again, maybe I'm dreaming.Zed wrote:I think you are probably going to be closest.hotdish wrote:Senior List changes

I suspect Milne will be offered up as trade bait - but cant see a suitable deal being done.
Curious to see what happens with Matt Maguire - there will be clubs asking about his services for sure - will he want to be traded to get more game time ?
Gwilt and X have no trade value and possibly have some upside so they will stay.

Why would Maguire go anywhere?
Max is gone, so Maguire steps up to being the first defensive reserve; he will be close to the 22.
I expect Gilbert to go forward next year (he trained there all of pre-season) to offer us a third marking target, and this allows Maguire to slot into the 22 (starting back 6).

There is some talk of a swap of Maguire for Brad Fisher from Carlton.
Around same age.
Similar number of games.
Fisher a tall mobile target with strong hands for us.
Goose slots in at CHB for them.
Personally I want Goose to stay.

WHilst I would probably rather Goose stayed on, he'd start off as a back-up and I could hardly blame him for wanting to try his luck elsewhere. Doubt we'd go for Brad Fisher. Can't get a game for the BLues..... didn't we have the same thing with Charlie G a couple of years ago?BackFromUSA wrote:There is some talk of a swap of Maguire for Brad Fisher from Carlton.
If Goose were to go, something along the lines of swapping to get a higher first rounder would be my preference.

Milne will stay. Our other forwards did not have much of an influence as a collective so to single out one is pointlessMilan Faletic wrote:I've been thinking the same thing but I am torn about this. I agree. No 13 was the most disappointing for me with that nonchalant round the corner kick in the first quarter. His kicking was awful. No 24's defensive efforts in the first quarter were shocking but then he improved. No 32 had a bad one but has been good all year.reincarnated wrote:Milne will stay. No need to hit the panic button because of 10 minutes of ordinary footy.

Gilbert may go forward...but that would possibly be by recruiting Everitt.hotdish wrote:Why would Maguire go anywhere?

Lyon's preferred backline revolves around have lots of tallish very mobile players.
Goose' mobility looked lacking this year.
Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....
For Maguire's sake what is the point of him being a reserve?saintsRrising wrote:Gilbert may go forward...but that would possibly be by recruiting Everitt.hotdish wrote:Why would Maguire go anywhere?

There is no prizes or pat's on the back for being an emergency every week
a couple of things
would be happy if we upgraded our first rounder for goose but if not get everitt
everitt into the backline release gilbo into the midfield which is what ros wants long term.
fish, max and allen are gone,
agree that LJ will go the same way asmini and howard. Will take howards spot on the rookie list.
it's a 50/50 decision re: miles
I don't think milne will go, but will struggle to make the starting 22 next year
schneids was so disapointing but I thought dempster was awesome
raph as a winger and BJ as a pure midfielder are two things that need to be developed.
those who want someone like fev, stupid because he doesn't fit out game plan. Ross will not alter it, he will just add some pace and creativity forward of centre.
Part of me thinks this team could get better

Let's look at our needs and what we have covered.
OUR AGING RUCKMEN
We dont need another ruckman. McEvoy will get more game time and in fact King will become like Max - an experienced backup as we get games into the future ruckman. When Gardiner is injured, Stanley will hopefully get a game because in 2011 it will be Stanley taking over the Gardiner role. We also have 2 or 3 more ruckmen in development.
A LACK OF SMALL MEDIUM BACKS
Games will be given to Jack Steven and Geary to build their experience and help create the depth we need and greater flexibility. I think the grand final has shown that we need a medium sized defender and eventually we shall need another small defender to replace Bakes, so i expect both Steven and Geary to get game time here. I would really love to see other options tried in practice matches to see who can shine. X will be given another chance from the back flank to see if he can regain form, if he is not traded.
INSIDE MIDFIELDERS - GETTING THE MIX RIGHT
I dont think we need to recruit here. We have the players. I dont believe we got the mix right for most of the season and you need two of these on the ground at all times - so you need 3 in the team. Armitage (60% game time) and Ball (60% game time) should be used in the midfield combined with Hayes (80% game time) to throw themselves in to packs for clearances and create the pressure they are so good at with tackling.
A MIDFIELD SPEEDSTER
We do need a player with game breaking speed. Montagna could have played this role but he has been developed now into an inside midfielder and has good pack and tackling skills. And has flourished because of it.
THE THIRD TALL FORWARD
Up forward is probably the toughest hole to fill. We need a third marking target that can also exert ground level pressure. We have tried makeshift solutions this year - Gwilt, Dempster etc. We need a full time specialist in this role so that we stop looking for Reiwoldt EVERY forward entry. Our only current options are Goddard and Gilbert. Goddard is too valuable kicking into the forward 50. Gilbert's rebound has been so important in 2009, but he could be the answer. Lyon had him in mind, but lost his nerve round 1. I say let's revisit this. we can replace him in the back half easier than trying to fill this spot with makeshift 3rd talls. Tom Lynch will not be ready in 2010 - he still needs to grow his body.
SMALL FORWARDS
We have them. They all had shockers in the Grand Final but all had great years. They are our starting 3 small forwards for 2010. And watch out for Choo-Choo as Ross Tungatalum starts to build some body strength.
RECRUITING STRATEGY - THE DRAFT
Recruiting wise I think any draftee (our first pick will be pick 16 - is that right?) will have little or no impact on 2010. Using this pick on a player that will take 3 to 5 years to develop is a waste. We have plenty of quality young players in development. Using our picks to fill our structural holes in what we MUST do to win a premiership. List wise we are strong for another 3 to 5 years. We must take that chance now and use the first three rounds of draft picks as trade material.
RECRUITING STRATEGY - PLAYER TRADES
Goose Maguire is the only player of note we have that is generating interest from other clubs. Is he for trade? Fans say no. Lyon doesnt play him. Gut feel he will be moved on IF the right deal is offered up.
OUR STRUCTRAL NEEDS
--> small / medium defenders (i think we can develop them from our list)
--> more midfield speed (Lovett and Burgoyne are both worth a crack)
--> the third tall forward (Gilbert is perfect in every way for this)
--> a third tall defender with rebound to replace Gilbert moving forward
We are OK for everything else.
TRADE WEEK
So is it Goose for Brad Fisher or even Andrew Walker from Carlton?
Do we chase Burgoyne with offers of draft picks and some fringe players and hope that Port Adelaide like something they have seen on our list?
Do we take a risk on a bad boy like Andrew Lovett? Do we have anything Essendon wants? Does Maguire old any value to them now they have young guns of their own showing potential?
Can another Everitt play 200 games for us?
Personally I want to keep Goose. I love how he plays BUT it is not our style anymore and I dont think he will get a game next year eaither yet he would play the whole season for other clubs. It should be his call.
I would be flagging a deal with Port Adelaide to try to get Burgoyne. Would 2 Clarkes work as a swap for a Burgoyne? I dont think so. But worth a crack. I dont in anyway think Port would accept this. Add in a second round draft pick as well and we might get that over the line.
Andrew Walker is worth a crack too but not if it means losing Goose and we know Carlton is keen on Goose. Walker and Brad Fisher for Goose plus a 3rd round pick and then we might just bite and move Goose on.
Everitt could be swapped for pick 16 unless another team offers better. He wants out and The Bulldogs want a deal better than a 2nd rounder.
If we could get:
--> Burgoyne
--> Walker and Fisher
--> Everitt
We will have addressed our needs.
If we get thm for the loss of Goose / R and X clarke and otur 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft picks, then we will have definitely upgraded our list and created some additional strengrhs where we have current weaknesses.

I think the opposition worked out Kosi at full forward as the season went on and he lost some effectiveness to the point of not being the player I thought he would be in the finals. McEvoy needs to be in the 2010 seniors as a ruck/ forward. I would think Gards or King may be looked at by RL..one may go, Milne must surely be on the way out -if experienced skillful players can't turn it on in finals when it counts, then RL would be left with little choice. I reckon RL will be ruthless in list management/ recruiting and preparation over summer.

We have Jack Steven, Rhys Stanley, Tom Lynch, Nick heyne, all on the Senior List who should be given some game time next season, as well as Blake McGrath, Simpkin, and Choo Choo on the Rookie list, all to be developed. The older ones, such as Howard, Miles, maybe should be moved on. All is not doom and gloom. I do think that not enough youngsters were played this season, and it is weak as water that Matt never got his 100 game.

Seems like just a few weeks ago Miles was in the paper and touted as the next big thing for our defence...
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

re someone who asked about the veterans list and 10years v 30 years of age:
---------
32.1.3 Eligibility
A Player is eligible to be nominated as a veteran Player or included on a Club’s Veterans List if:
a) in the case of the Port Adelaide Football Club and Fremantle Football Club, the Player:
i) is 30 years of age or older as at 31 December before the next AFL Season; and
ii) was included on the Port Adelaide Football Club’s or Fremantle Football Club’s Primary List or equivalent
thereof, as the case may be, at the time the respective Club commenced playing in the AFL Competition.
(b) in the case of all other Clubs, the Player:
i) is 30 years of age or older as at 31 December before the next AFL Season; and
(ii) has been included on the relevant Club’s List (excluding the Rookie List), for a period of 10 complete years.
--------------------------------------
My understanding WAS that if they have been on the list for 10 years, they are eligible. So anyone drafted in November/December 1999 or before [Baker,Blake, Hayes] is eligible to be on the rookie list this upcoming season.
But this seems to say they have to be 30 AND have played 10 years...
FYI - Ages
Blake - 28y 195d
Baker - 29y 127d
Hayes - 29y 255d

I don't think he was horrible on the two best full-backs in the comp in the last two games. Took some good marks across half-forward and had 6 inside 50s against the Dogs. Was beaten in the GF but in the hardest conditions of the season for big forwards.Longwayfromhome wrote:OUT - A high profile forward, who despite a reasonable regular season, just doesn't get it done when it comes to the BIG time.
No, it's not No. 44.
Bye Bye Kosi.
Very unlikely that he'll be let go - it's about morale as much as anything.
Also very unlikely Milne will be traded as he has no real value to anyone else. And he won't be delisted because that doesn't add up. Might play fewer games next year, though.
