Max has not played a game in ages.

Would lack fitness and match touch...

Backline in seniors is playing very well.

So as much as I love and respect Max...he has to play with Sandy first.
If he is fit - then he is fit.

Max should be straight into the seniors.
Surely you are joking. Goes against everything RL has been doing this year. Will not have played for at least 9 weeks and hopefully 7 out of 7 victories. May even play Sandy reserves. No hope of playing first up with the Saints unless we have the worst run of injuries.
Are we talking about the same player?

If we were losing, would you play him in the seniors?

The performance of Zac Dawson allows Maxie the extra week or two to ensure he is super fit.

And I don't agree on what RL has been doing for the entire year, I believe we should pick our best players and not dodge having to make a tough call on selection.

And If hudghton was to come through the reserves, it should only be for fitness. This bloke shouldn't have to earn his spot. Lets not forget that Zac didn't in the first place.
Of course it is through fitness. I dont know any player who can get match fit just training. He will not play seniors when fit enough to play because he will not be match fit and we may and hopefully havent lost a game.

I didn't get there till half time.
But The Goose was certainly "cooking" in the second half.
Great to see.

i've never given up on him and it doesn't surprise me to see him beginning to dominate matches again, albeit at vfl level.

looking forward to seeing him in the seniors before too long.

Would love to see Goose back, If King is ready to come back and is an automatic selection? then Goose would need to displace a defender to get a spot though.

Dont know who that would be? If you drop dawson for Goose then Blake plays at full back and Goose at CHB, or Blake is out.

If King has to come back through Sandy, or is still not ready then Goose could replace a mid size player and rotate with Kosi and Gardiner through the ruck/fwd line and be on hand to go back if needed?

Will be interesting, all hinges around King IMO.

Maybe Goose has to play at Sandy again?

Strongly disagree with not changing the side because we are winning though. Selection criteria is to select the best team to win this week, not the best side that won last week.

To all those bemoaning "lets pick the best side...bring back our so called stars at the expense of a team thats been winning".....just remember....a key message Lyon has given this group is:

Doesnt matter who you are - do your job match day, do the hard % things the game plan calls for and you get rewarded. Fail to do this and you go out.

So what doe this really mean?

IMHO Its at the core of our success in FINALLY playing as a team. It means finally at St Kilda your "talent" or your name is less important than your work ethic. The upshot of that is - we have blokes from 1 to last on the list that BELIEVE that IF they get a go at senior level they wont be dropped AS LONG AS they do their job and team thing first.

Start rushing in players and dropping guys who have been performing in a winning side and you risk upsetting that happy equilibirum.

Not sure thats a good idea for the confidence alone.

Look at Lonergan for Geelong - very good player and hes right on Hawkings hammer for his spot and even though hes done well recently in VFL they havent rushed him in.........they just allow that internal pressure to build so when guys get a senior shot they bust their gut to keep it.

Hawkings, or Hawkins as he prefers to be known, was not in that side at the start of the year, Lonegan was. Geelong has also not lost a game and has been playing good team footy. Thompson and his match comitte dropped Lonegan for Hawkins as they felt he would improve their side, they were right, Hawkins has probably been better than Mooney the last 2 weeks. Gamble and D Johnson are also guys who have been very unlucky to get dropped, however Harley and Stokes havebeen seen as better for balance, or just better. Geelong are a poor example of the point you are trying to make, they are very rarely unchanged even with a 49-3 record in their last 52 starts.

Depends how you look at it Rex.

"Lonegan" or Lonergan as he prefers to be known (but lets not quibble on semantics..) is still playing good footy in the VFL - was he droped cause Hawkins was simply better or did the club believe he wasnt in form? dont know and thats a different proposition. Im not saying dont drop players who arent in form but the players many want dropped IMHO are playing consistently well in a winning side - why upset that balance? Also, I supposed Hawkins is a bad example - Geelong see him, Gamble et al as the future - dropping and promoting these guys is more about future development than anything and lets remember Geelong have had 2 years of consistently elite performance - I reckon weve had this years 6 games. Big difference. Geelong have had that time to well and truly build their team work ethic - we have just commenced IMHO.

Regardless of Geelong as an appropriate example, lets talk on the bigger issue -THE REAL point behind my post (not Hawkins surname..) - whats it say to players who are asked to do the team things, who then go out and actually do them (while the team wins) only to be dropped for guys (in Maguires case) who havent been round for years and who have strung 1 great game together??

No thanks I prefer team over individual idolisation.

The Goose is tantalising the tastebuds ladies and gentlefolk. Good to see him pressing his case in another position. I do beleive with our back six solid and settled at the moment that Goose will have trouble getting a gig their, the forward line might be his option.

Many on here have touted or suggested him to take over from Sammy's roll as the ''enforcer'' in the forward line, and he might just do this, albeit it is only one game, it's still a promising effort.

Either way, I would just love to see him at AFL level one way or another, great job Goose, keep it up. :!: :!: :!: :!: RAAAAAAWR.

awesome stuff. I really want to see him play for the saints again and soon, but I'd be buggered to know who to drop, would be a bit stiff. Let alone putting him ahead of others gunning for spots. I suppose this is the sort of situation clubs dream for, particularly come the end of the season.

i'd like to see that.

with kosi playing second ruck at the moment we could certainly do with a strong aerial target to take some heat off riewoldt.

he's the rare type who can split packs and take contested marks. this allows you to kick to a contest and can really bring crumbers like milne and schneider into the game.

my fear is that if goose can't break into the side he'll be traded to one of our arch enemies like carlton. they'd slot him straight into chf, and, with fev, it would give them potentially a very dangerous forward line.

i'd hate to see that.

I would say that we are playing 22 geese tomorrow night, but that would be an insult to the common goose and all that it has achieved over its extravagant history.

RL has all players beleiving if they do their job and are fully fit then they will keep their spots. This is the healthiest I have seen the club for a while from an attitutude perspective. Unless your are 100% fit and a proven player you will have to earn your spot.Max will definately play for Sandy first (I'd bet my house on it) = he will need to prove to the match committee that he is match fit. Only then will they bring him back in.

PS..Great to see the goose getting his form back. What a great asset to have just busting to come back in.

What a load of rubbish...

Maybe you should have been at the luncheon on Friday

So are you suggesting that Zac should be dropped for Max??

Again, RL stated that he will be more than happy not to make any more changes to the side...

If a player plays a shocker, then fair enough...

According ot RL, you just can't change a side for players fit and ready on PAST PERFORMANCES !!!

I agree with RL's thoughts....

The CURRENT 22 are doing their job and I really don't see a reason in dropping a player ATM

This current list knows the game plan and have been involved in it and have performed their tasks...

Introduce a player that has not played that game plan and included him into the side for a player that has performed his tasks is just asking for trouble IMO

Just maybe you should have attended the luncheon and questioned RL on his speech, and then do the same when Roo endorsed what RL has stated..

CABBAGE !

I completely agree with your post to a certain extent. If there is a player that does the job of another player (RE:Max/Zac) better than the player in the 22, then there does deserve to be a straight swap, as long as its assured that they will be a better alternative. Atm however, there is no evidence to suggest that an aging Max Hudghton coming back from an injury (where he clearly has had a significant set-back since he hasn't played for 7 weeks) will be better than a coming-of-age Zac Dawson who has seemed to have found his feet.

Obviously this thread is about Maguire- so that being said, Gwilt has to play a bloody good game tomorrow night or he will most likely lose his spot to a man desperate for selection. Watching the game on ABC Maguire was clearly the best player on the ground (from both teams) and looked too good to be at VFL level. He broke his foot exactly a year ago and its time to let him play his 100th game and show why most of us here have held faith in him.
