Bonner's 17 turnoivers is apparently the worst recorded by a player since 2012. Weirdly, the club sold him to us as a precision kick.

If Brad Scott's plan was to stifle Nas and free up Bonner to turn the ball over, he knows moire about Bonner than the Saints brains trust does.

Send him back to the Port knackery, the guy is mentally and physically not an AFL footballer.

I noticed him take several kick-ins, not sure if he did it more than Nas, but at least 2 went to a big pack and Bombers marked it, while 50m from FB on the opposite wing, Hill was on his own...
Drop him till he decides to practice kicking properly

Who do you replace him with?
In the past Clarke (injured but seems destined for mid) or Coffield (traded).
Cupboard is a little bear atm but all our defenders are under pressure while the game is played in the back half

Got into the West Australian’s team of the weekend on the bench, because of his “massive” 1 018m “gained” A useless statistic. Too much American detritus has crept into Aussie Rules terminology.

If they were honest, they'd subtract the total distance of the 17 turnovers to arrive at a more realistic figure.

'Metres gained' is rubbish 🙆‍♂️

Some interesting stats here - both for Bonner and Nic Martin's games.

https://www.wheeloratings.com/afl_match ... D=20240304

Check out "Player Rating" which seems to be a much better indication than fantasy scores.

Also Score Involvements - 6 for the game for Riley. 5 for Martin.

I think we're going to persist with Bonner for the next 2-3 weeks.

I don't think Lyon has many other options until Webster returns.

He's also gone on record defending Riley and his other players when they make errors.

I found this on the internet... Bonner is in good company

Most turnovers by a player in a single game since 2012:

17 - Riley Bonner (Round 3, 2024)
16 - Jack Crisp (Round 4, 2021)
16 - Dom Sheed (Round 16, 2021)
15 - Harley Bennell (Round 17, 2015)
15 - Marcus Bontempelli (Round 3, 2023)

He's actually getting a fair bit of the ball and his MGs are off the chart as well as score involvements so if he can clean up the turnovers then it could work out itself out.

His metres gained is him playing on from the goal square when on kick out duties which is like 30m on average. He took out 4. So there’s 120m. Then there’s the cheap handball receives which you run and extra 10m. It’s not damaging like a NWM metres gained or a Sinclair metres gained.

Minus the metres they gained from his turnovers
1050-750 = 300

Minus opportunity cost. Which was a lot.
Getting 4 points, priceless (would have been).
Missing the 8. Rather expensive.
Ah well. we take away valuable learnings.

Thought I would give this a bump to ask how the egg is getting cleaned off.

Seriously some of the rubbish written here is embarrassing

24 disposals (a goal) at 92% DE, 4 turnovers (whatever they mean), 509 metres gained

And by the way it was no free for dropping the ball, Rioli charged in but never actually tackled him, it was a bump that dislodged the ball (that is not a free), play on

I think like success starved supporters of all teams, we (the royal we) have a tendency to go super early in crucifying and forming opinions on our players. Reminds me of the Carlton "faithful" who for a time were determined to send Patrick Cripps west as he was cooked, and how silly that looks in retrospect.

Not saying Bonner is a superstar but I've seen opinions ranging from he should be sacked to he should be fired from a cannon into the sun after... 3 games.

I’m a Bonner critic but he played a good game today. A lot better than last week and was harder around the contest.

Certainly bounced back - I agree that the criticism last week was over the top but you really only have your self to blame when you have 17 turnovers.

Kid has excellent skills but the challenge for him is composure… making the right decision rather than blazing.

One thing I really like about him… 4 games in, has turned up to play in all of them even if he dropped his bundle a bit in the Essendon game.

At this point, I’m very happy with the acquisition

Well im knocking back a couple of negronis in celebration of tonight’s great effort by the boys, it was good to see the expected improvement after the disappointing effort against the druggies.

The improvement is happening

4 turnovers (whatever they mean),

I found when you challenged those who were hyper focused on the stat and what it meant they came up empty handed.
