Yeah he had a bit talent could take a grab & kick a goal not much of chaser or pressure forward but I was there when he kicked 7 I think & the animal enclosure was going off

IMO only SG He was pretty handy , courageous & gave it all he had but pretty much like most of our recruitments skill level wasn't as good as his tenacity

Yep..guess so...

39 disposals on debut, aged 23, ex-VFA player.

I guess this conversation - out of respect - should not include players still playing, either for St Kilda or elsewhere, lest we slip into the sewer of our collective sulk about 2022! (there are a few I could name!)

Jason Traianides
Joe McLaren

Thought both these guys were gonna be sensational for us.
Jason T was tearing it up in one preseason game...
McLaren seemed to have time to do things, like Dal Santo

Greig was pretty good IMO. Not unlike Rod Keogh or Chris Hollow, cheap as chips but goers.

Robert Elphinstone.
Watched him in a practice match and said he ran like a Giraffe and would never make it. Unfortunately his father was standing in front of me and gave me a mouthful.
Pleased to say his father knew best.

I remember the 1996 night grand final against Carton McLaren & Trianides were very good in that famous victory (well that's as good as it gets for baby boomer) unfortunately they did what most St.Kilda recruits did folded like wet cardboard

32 I think. Can't think of a great 32 but will stand corrected.
John Peter-Budge disappointed me.

Jeff Hilton .... debuted at 19yo in Rd 11 1991 against the Hawks and had it 18 times and kicked a goal (we won by 26pts against the future Premier) ...... looked to be a future gun in the making ...... BUT

He only played 6 games for us and another 43 with Melbourne

JPB was a hell of a player when fit

Played 45 games and kicked 26 goals and that was between the ages 17 to 20 ..... never played a game thereafter due to a back issue.

Great shame as he could play

I went to the Saints family day at Luna Park, it was the Sunday before the game if I recall, i got my Saints polo top signed by about 18-20 of the players, my mum washed it one time, as mothers do, and the signatures disappeared 😵🤦‍♂️

I contacted JPB on twitter a while ago, he seemed happy that somebody remembered him.

JPB was a gun.

Dean Greig and Rod Keogh were twice as hard as any player on our current list.
They would run through each and every one of them.

Sean Dempster - took me a while to warm to him, maybe because he came over from Sydney. But by golly, he was a tough and dour defender. The guy always put his body on the line. Such a humble player, too. I hope post-AFL career life has been treating him well.

Stephen Newport - also came across from another AFL club (Melbourne). Similar type of player to Dempster from memory. Didn’t play as many games, but was very serviceable during his time at Moorabbin.

Too many ended up disappointing that I thought would go onto having illustrious careers, so no point going there.

Both Greig and Keogh were good value.

Greig’s debut at Waverley vs Carlton, 1991 is one game I’ll never forget.

Rocket Keogh under Stan Alves was a terrific blue collar type of player.

Another one that went on to disappoint...

Barry Brooks went on to be a very infamous player for all the wrong reasons... most notably the reputation of shirking a contest against Port that turned the supporter base off forever.

However, post his knee reco, when he was on the comeback trail, he played one of the best practice games I’d ever seen. It was at Moorabbin against North. Might have been Carey’s last game for them.

I don’t remember the stats exactly, but he had like 40 hitouts, marked everything around the game, menaced and bullied the Roos... a few of which were senior players. Kicked a few goals to. Obviously just a practice game but he looked an angry Stewart Loewe that day.

Thought he was back and ready to burst onto the scene... I think despite winning by a ton, we played North in the first or second game that year and Brooks could not get near it... ever again
